    Why or how?

I don't know why because I didn't work at the studio. As for how, the unmodified versions are bad for a litany of reasons, but most offensive is the music restarting after each random encounter.

The original PC versions were fricking great.
I remember a friend had FF8 and he had a GPU the game was designed for and it blew my mind how good the game looked. On top of this the game came with a program which allows you to customize midi sounfont (in case you didn't know the musics are midi even on PSX), which worked with the game but also with just any midi.

Plus it had the pocket station Chocobo mini game which is absent from the PSX version.

Only thing is you absolutely need a pad because Limit Breaks on keyboard was really ass.

      >musics are midi even on PSX
No they are not. Sequenced audio is not automatically MIDI.

it starts off as MIDI when composed then it's converted to a similar format

I could then say that 99% of Red Book audio in games is actually MIDI too. But I'm not going to.

Not that anon but your original point was an autistic nitpick over a distinction few care about. If you had been slightly more polite instead less mindlessly argumentative you probably wouldn't even have gotten a single (You).

An interesting tangent but there's some people out there that run them with some real nice Roland & Yamaha units and they sound amazing.
While I don't like the games themselves it's an interesting thing the last ports have (not sure if the new ones do).

    Are they?
Sure the visuals rely on 8-bit palettized textures which modern hardware no longer has available but that's on Nvidia and ATI deprecating the feature rather than the ports being shit.
The sound is reliant on either hardware MIDI or the included software synth but MIDI audio was nothing strange back then.
The controls can be rebinded easily enough. FF8 even includes the PocketStation stuff not seen in the western PS1 version!
I can't think of anything major that's wrong with them then compared to other contemporary PC ports of console games.

Why are the PC ports of FF7 and FF8 so bad?

I dont blame nvidia so much as i blame square for selling this shit on steam without some type of disclaimer that the game isnt meant for modern hardware

Theyre ancient pc ports that havent been updated and are still being sold. Square could literally just be selling an emulated version of ff7 instead (which they already are on consoles) and it would run better.

Another plus side was that modding was really easy in the PC version.

Wanna play the entire game with a team of Laguna, Edea and Seifer? or hell, make a party of 3 Selphies?

    Frick yeah you can.

They're fine ports by the standards of their time, main issue with them is that time was the late 90s. You need to mod the hell out of it to bring it to even just the PS1 standard, beyond that you're really pushing it.

This, they didn't have the original code to work with for either game anymore when they started the ports. Hell, for FF7 they put ads in PC gaming mags asking for programmers to help.

They aren't. The original disc versions played on the correct period-appropriate hardware are excellent. The real issue is that the shitty initial Steam versions with badly-recorded MP3 files of the MIDIs using the stock Windows soundfont convinced everybody that they had horrible music. Lots of people experienced that shitty audio and assumed that was just how it was supposed to be, when in fact the disc version of FF7 comes with multiple different soundtracks built for different specific hardware. The Yamaha XG tracks are the highest quality and sound really good when played back on an MU80.

The only real disappointment with them is a lack of vocals in One Winged Angel. However, it isn't accurate to say that those were completely missing either. One of the other soundtracks on the disc, designed for Creative AWE cards instead, has OWA complete with vocals. Here it is recorded from an AWE64 Gold:

There are a lot of misconceptions about the PC ports due to Squenix's laziness when putting them on Steam.

      >There are a lot of misconceptions about the PC ports due to Squenix's laziness when putting them on Steam.

It's pretty amazing how big corpos fail so hard at times with Steam re-releases of old games. I am reminded of this:
      https://store.steampowered.com/app/565550/Redneck_Rampage/

That's for the original game. But tons of screenshots on there are from the expansion pack (not included) and even the sequel.
How could they release things properly when they don't even know what they have?!

BTW in case that's not clear, those screenshots from the expansion pacK? They don't even own the expansion pack (it's not being sold on Steam either).

Here is information from a programmer who worked on the MGS1 PC port.

    https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9739731

    >Limited time and limited staff
    >Games were designed specifically for the PSX hardware and were never intended to be portable
    >Comments and documentation were only in Japanese
    >PC gaming in general was a lot less standard than it is now (APIs, hardware, OS stability)

Most of this probably applies to the Final Fantasy ports.

You literally posted a screenshot posting broken UV mapping

You realize that you can turn the ugly filtering off in the PC version, right?

Filtering isn't the main issue, it's all the textures being misaligned.

The UV mapping issue was solvable with a registry edit on Windows 98. For modern systems there's a patch available which fixes it.

    What's so bad about them?
I played FF7 on PC. Worked fine.

PC was still an afterthought back then that few cared about. The original PS1 version of FF7 didn't even have the orchestrated music, One Winged Angel was in freaking midi format.

That being said, the current Steam version of FF7 is pretty good now. It started out as a shitty port of the original PC version with all of it's problems, but has been improved since. Only thing really missing in it IMO is proper controller support, it's a bit janky how you use to use a launcher to map your gamepad to the game's keyboard controls, and then you have to use a mod to make the game tell you the actual buttons you are pressing instead of the keyboard button they are mapped to.

No idea about the state of the Steam version of FF8.

The problem with the recent Steam ports of S-E's older games is that a lot of them (Such as FF7 and Chrono Trigger) launched in a state that was absolute trash, but many did get eventually patched to fix many of the complaints. A lot of the reviews are going to be from the launch version. That being said, there are many there were also never fixed, so it's a bit of a mess to do the research.

      >One Winged Angel was in freaking midi format
Why is it that in the past 5 years zoomers have taken to calling all sequenced music "MIDI" and all the samples therein "soundfonts"?

        Anonymous

Same reason people call tissues “kleenex”, or any form of compressed file a “zip”. It’s just the most popular form by a significant margin, so it’s what people know the entire medium by.

FF7 on PC made every npcs mouth look like they were about to give a blowie.
I tried to find a picture but apparently the original game has been completely replaced by the remake on every search engine. I tried multiple different strings of key words and only got back remake results. RIP FF7.

Speaking of faces, FFVII has like 5 different eye variants for every main character that are also mostly unused in the original game like the mouths but PC apparently only uses the main 2 like NPCs rather than including the handful of instances others actually appear.
