Why are you all acting like this is some huge happening.

Why are you all acting like this is some huge happening. Look at the immediate mass response to the new Unity decision from devs and players alike. Unity is not not going to stick with the changes. In a couple days max they'll go "uh actually nvm" and it'll all be a big nothingburger. Buy stock while it's low, I guess.

unreal is genuinely the bigger retard magnet now because of the marketing they do. unity's trash reputation actually somehow loops around makes only devs that understand its perks home in on towards it. well used to. now no one wants to use this shit

      >unity releases a statement that they are altering the deal for everyone who has ever used unity to develop anything
      >now if the developer gains 200k revenue and have 200k installs, they are going to be charged 20 cents for every time a user installs the game and the telemetry informs unity about it
      >telemetry doesn't track whether it's the same user installing because it was never intended for that (the suits were probably just told it was vaguely possible so they ham on the concept)
      >this means there's no way to track which installs are even legitimate and which ones are timmy's python script sending the packet to their servers 30000x times an hour
      >unity admits they themselves can't really know for sure so they will just make a good guess at it and ask you to just trust them
      >this means unity is essentially telling every huge game company that uses unity (blizzard, nintendo, the genshin impact guys, etc.) that they need to pay them some number they basically cooked up from thin air or they will sue them
      >small devs totally freaking out because it applies to EVERY game ever released, so even if they don't want anything to do with this, they have to get ready for the legal shenanigans when they are poor as shit already
      >comedy ensues as people find more and more holes in the plan, aside from the big obvious ones that already make it unfeasible and retarded
      >the CEO who came up with this idea will probably be forced to resign and walk off with a golden parachute payout (which was his plan all along)

Not sure how correct this is, but some anon in other thread mentioned that Unity engine is technically a subscription-based service, not a product and thus they can change shit on the fly. You don't want to pay for installs of previously released Unity games? Just cancel your "subscription" by pulling your games from the market.

the difference is that unity is trying to take on several companies that are worth billions or even trillions, like nintendo. unity's plan is to try to shake them all down for money while providing no service for that money or leverage for them to do so, other than the threat of legal action

Even if they walk back the damage is already done and lots of devs won't trust unity again and will jump the ship at the nearest opportunity. Unity showed that they are the type to retroactively alter the deal, no one in their right mind will do business with them. Not to mention, even unity's higherups are getting ready to escape and are selling stocks, this was probably their last attempt at making a squeeze. Unity's a dead man walking.

those companies never saw a dime from the big gacha bucks, because everything was on a flat fee before
that flat fee environment is EXACTLY what allowed f2p and gacha games to thrive, because it was far easier to make money through microtransactions and updating a single game than releasing multiple games
that environment is EXACTLY why they are throwing a schizo tantrum after seeing how much money they lost on from gacha
