Why being "mini game heavy" considered as bad thing? Whats wrong with game constantly throws lots of various cool stuff to entertain yourself? I always replay Spyro trilogy back to back, so when I reach third game it feels really refreshing
I think it's OK when Spyro did it, because Spyro's basically gameplay isn't that amazing, and the minigames weren't that bad. Just saying.
i like how agent 9's gameplay was adapted into the first ratchet and clank
I don't consider it a bad thing in Spyro 3 because the core platforming was always mediocre and all of the minigames were pretty well designed.
I consider it a bad thing in Crash 3 because the core platforming is fun and many of the minigames were shit like the motorcycle races and plane levels.
because spyro tried to suck crash's dick at that time which began doing same nonsense gimmicks
did you know if you press L1 and triangle in spyro 1 main menu you get to get play demo of crash 3 GIMMICK level?
I never had any issue with the mini games in Spyro 2 and 3 because the base gameplay is still there and really substantial. It's not like when you play crash 3 and you can definitely say that every gimmick level took a core platforming level away from you. I never tried it but you could probably beat Spyro 3 skipping every minigame if you wanted to and you'd still get as much gameplay as Spyro 1 (I don't know if you'd get 100 eggs though).
Helps that pretty much all the minigames in Spyro are actually fun too
I just hated backtracking in 2
Unless you're playing de-ignited you can just use the cheat code to unlock the abilities early and not have to backtrack.
It's not inherently a bad thing, but more often than not, I think it's better to just develop the core gameplay in interesting and progressively more difficult ways. If I'm playing a platformer, nine times out of ten I'd rather just have a creative new platforming challenge that takes advantage of the moveset that the devs actually put effort into. Spyro 1, for the most part, is a perfect example of this.
That said, I would agree that Spyro does it pretty well for the most part. And because the first game was basically exactly what I described above, I can sympathize with Insomniac running out of ideas and going in other directions. Plus, you're easily still spending the lion's share of your time with the core gameplay.
because the minigames aren't very good.
I also disagree that spyro's gameplay is mediocre. It's great. Could he have some more powers in the sequels? sure. that would make it even better. but they went the minigame route instead.
that said, when the minigames are good, then it's great. I think the collectathon flying minigames in Spyro (all 3 of them iirc) are great, they are very fun. the skateboarding minigame 3 in also good.
Stuff like controlling his animal friends? no thanks.
the worst example of this is Crash 3 though. That game hypes up the motorcycle hooligan Crash, and he looks damn cool, but the motorcycle minigame is actually complete trash
Because the minigames weren't that fun or interesting. It was just filler content because the devs were running out of ideas.
None of the mini-games are fun
>yeti boxing
t. had trouble with the trolley
that's the worst one
Its probably a game by game thing. Some games it is okay while others it seems idk, lazy perhaps? Not so great? As for Spyro I don't know I haven't played that one to know. Seems like mini games within a game are a very platformer type of thing.
mini-games lack depth. It's in the name. When you're young or don't have a discerning apatite you don't care about a lack of depth, it might even preferable.
Someone will probably mention Mario Party. The point of something like Mario Party is that it lacks depth so gamers of a variety of skill levels and ages can play and have all have a chance. If it wasn't this way a play group would quickly realize which one of them would always win and they would look for another party game.
This cover art is terrible.
It's way better than 2's cover art
Because a lot of the time the minigames are not good and are required to beat the game
>sheila sucks to control
>bentley really sucks to control
>agent 9 moves too slow but it barely matters because i dont think you control him in a standard form ever again after his intro level
>tons of the minigames are "do thing, now do it again"
>a lot of them are either tedious or require memorization to get through
I like spyro 3 when it's not doing this stuff but tell me, what is fun about escorting fireflies to some location and memorizing their path so they don't just walk into a rock, or mashing jab during boxing in a way that'll break the AI?
>but it barely matters because i dont think you control him in a standard form ever again after his intro level
You do when getting the gems in his part of Dino Mines, and also his Haunted Tomb part.
>what is fun about escorting fireflies to some location and memorizing their path so they don't just walk into a rock, or mashing jab during boxing in a way that'll break the AI?
Honestly out of what, like 40 side challenges? those are the only 2 that are actually bad. Not a bad ratio of minigame content quality in a game.
The majority of the good minigames involve flying, super charging and using flames. All things that would naturally be part of the level. In Spyro 2 and 3 there is no more gliding challenges or super charging as part of the level itself. Hell, in Spyro 2 there is barely any gliding at all, only one level has the possibility of failing and dying in a jump.
There's others, like the races that can be outright impossible due to the scaling difficulty mandating you throw once or twice to render them doable.
Some versions of Spyro 3 also had a nasty bug that made getting the egg from speedway races impossible.

I was thinking more along the lines of simply being unable to outrace the others. Even if you cut corners as hard as possible and take every booster/fireball, 1st place starts so far ahead and moves too quickly to close the distance in those 3 laps.
agent 9 was schizo demo test character from insomniac wanting to do different games. it's just like those stealth sections in tomb raider 5, same company got sick of doing SAME SHIT FOR 5 YEARS
because some people prefer a more focused experience, plus if you buy a 3d platformer chances are you're not going to like the shitton of minigames that stray away from the main format
friendly reminder that 1 > 2 > 3
If I wanted to play a bunch of minigames that break the pace, I'd play Banjo Kazooie, which is a shit, slow game with no redeeming qualities.
Spyro had nice gameplay and, above all, was an adventure story, about braving into new, unknown world and exploring it.
Can't you understand how obnoxious it was to suddenly stop the exploration to do Yeti Boxing, Whack a Mole and escort missions?
Spyro 1 is a game you can easily pick up and mess around, it's in a sense closer to classic 2D platformers, and was by far the cleanest 3D platformer experience, if you don't count Crash as 3D.
But then people insisted it has to be just like every other 3D platformer and focus more on distractions than the main package.
I like the minigames in Spyro 2, stuff like the trolley and hockey is genuinely fun and I've never understood the complaints about them. Most of the orbs are acquired by just using the normal controls/moveset anyways, they're not really "minigames" which change how the character plays.
Spyro 3 isn't bad either, but it annoys me a bit because none of the other characters feel as nice to control as Spyro. The skateboarding is fun, but stuff like the submarine and the speedboat and the hovercraft all feel like clunky shit. Boxing with the yeti is obnoxious when you're trying to get the skill point, the only strategy is to spam the light attack and hope you get him into a rhythm.
I think Sheila was the best critter in 3, I could definitely see myself enjoying a full game like that if movement as her was just a bit smoother and if air control had more horizontal movement. Sgt. Byrd was alright, I think it played differently enough to distinguish himself from just Spyro with superfly, but you can't escape the fact that basically everything Byrd could do Spyro could have just done with superfly.
Bently was just kind of boring but at least they knew to keep his levels short. Agent 9 is fun for like 5 minutes but all of his levels go on for way too fucking long, I swear Agent 9's Lab must be the longest level in the game to beat just from how slow you move and how many areas there are in the level AND how they expect you to backtrack through it.
