Thief is just a derivative of old dungeon crawlers. If you want more thief you should be looking at those, not the imaginary genres of stealth or "imm sim".

"dungeon crawler" is the fakest genre there is. skyrim, diablo, and wizardry are all "dungeon crawlers". its just a descriptor, not a category.

also thief is not a dungeon crawler you absolute mongoloid.

blending in with crowds and not looking out of place. in earlier hitman game it meant that something as small as running instantly made you suspicious. in the new ones is basically just not being seen doing something like picking a lock or standing around distractions/crime scenes.

Is the Hitman series complex? It is stealth right? I remember having trouble with Hitman 2 back in the day since it felt so foreign compared to Tenchu

it honestly baffles me how thief is still the peak in so many aspects, I mean frick, the newest hitman games have muh "detective vision" which just highlights everything, same shit for MGSV which had the supersonic arm or the doggo which straight up gave you wall hacks, what the frick even is the point?

again, thief all those years back forced you to pay attention to the game, not just a corner map screen or the highlighted bits, it made you actually navigate the environments as you had less and less information the tougher the target area was, you had to use actual cues like sound, watching from advantage points or stealthily looking through a keyhole to scout out shit and finally the light system was crystal clear on how exposed you were without the moronic detection bars you see in every stealth game in the past 10-20 years

              Anonymous

i agree, stealth gameplay is all about observing current information (sounds, movements, environment) and then inferring potential actions from it. the moment they abstracted this away by pointing out the obvious the fun is lost.

                Anonymous

My problem with games like Tenchu and MGS is the alert system. Like, the enemy saw you, and they KNOW that you arent part of their crew, but as long as you hide for 30 - 60 seconds everything goes back to normal. I hate that shit. What should happen is if you are spotted (not just and article of clothing or a suspicious sound) then the fortress or compound you're infiltrating should be on alert for the rest of the stage. Not the highest level but on the 2nd level (caution). However Tenchu and MGS make stealth kill impossible in this state which i disagree with. It should still be possible to pull of a stealth kill in this state, but do so with some added level of difficulty.

I hope that made sense cause im in the process of getting wasted right now

The newer MGS do sort of do that but it eventually stops. Most people will just sit in the corner for the 3 minutes until it ends.

I’ve been replaying Dishonored the past week or so, and I’ve had way more fun going for mostly flesh and steel than I had on my first playthrough, something that I’m attributing almost completely to it locking me out of dark vision. Also helps that I have to plan things more without using blink to skip half the level.

An actual good modern stealth game? Probably never
The reason Hitman is so popular is because it's not a hard game or a true stealth game

Most actual stealth games like Splinter Cell or Thief have you always being hunted
Hitman has ways to mitigate the hunting

Imagine if every map was like Colorado but no disguses
Instead we get the areas of 'danger' and ways to mitigate it (disguises) with maybe 5-6 enemies who can see through as enforcers
So it's 'fun' because you can choose when you want to engage in a dangerous situation instead of always being in it and trying to survive

      >An actual good modern stealth game? Probably never
      >The reason Hitman is so popular is because it's not a hard game or a true stealth game
I just want to let it be known that Sekiro is not a true stealth game either. Fricker like cite Sekiro in stealth threads for whatever reason but the fact of the matter is you can play Sekiro any way you want. Yea, there ARE stealth mechanics in it, but its use is not emphasized and the punishment for not being stealthy is negligible.

        Anonymous

Sekiro has stealth elements in the same way some of the Zelda games do
If an enemy won't notice you and normally uses a shield to block, you can usually get a fair amount of damage in

Plenty of games have mechanics like that
Sekiro isn't a stealth game. It's an action game with some stealth mechanics. It's the same as Nioh.

      Anonymous

I've always played 3 types of stealth games and never liked any of them
      >Game has a stealth option but failure is expected and it's easy to kill all the enemies after being spotted. This disencourages stealth because you're spending more time on a playstyle that is not significantly advantageous
      >Game ends when you get caught or you're so weak that you will die 90% of the tiem when you get caught. This makes the game frustrating because it gives no leeway and half of the time you're dying because of unclear detection issues
      >Game gives the player the ability to run and hide when caught. This can be good especially if the map changes in more meaningful ways than the alert level of the enemies changing, like new patrols appearing or enemies getting new gear or locking doors, but most likely this is a soft equivalent of dying when getting caught and restarting. You run to a locker, wait for 1 minute and try again

However Gloomwood offers a 4th option with resource management and I love it
      >Can stealth kill enemies to make the game easier but it's not for the sake of making a future fight have less enemies, like in many modern games with optional stealth
      >Many enemies however can't be stealth killed because of their placement or just having armor
      >Can shoot enemies but ammo is very rare and very loud
      >Game has backtracking so you can also make the classic RE judgement calls of using resources to clear paths you think you will return to

All they had to do to make Thief good was to give Garret a gun. But obviously Gloomwood is very dependent on exact loot balancing so you will never gather enough ammo to be able to shoot through everything

        Anonymous

Gloomwood didn't have the hardest difficulty when I played, but I was overflowing with ammo because I abused explosive barrels. I feel like they really break the game. I'm sure I can pull the same thing off on the hardest difficulty unless they greatly reduce the number of barrels

          Anonymous

I played it on Blood Moon for the first time (this is the version with the fishery and coast, not the city/sewer one). Id like to think I'm a pretty good player and for like 75% of it I felt like I was starving for resources but I didnt abuse barrels or do any other cheese because the ink ribbon save system with very few ribbons especially at the fishery makes me play like a pussy

I'm sure the full game will have periods of high ammo because it's very hard to balance, unless they add an impossible difficulty, have dynamic loot drops or make the game easily modable

        Anonymous

Garrett has flashbombs which are the equivalent of Gloomwood's guns, they are a limited resource that lets you take out an enemy and recover from being seen, with a bit of noise

how is the first phantom doctrine? I've had it for years but still haven't played it, does it have any similarities to xcom or invisible inc?

        Anonymous

It has similarities to Xcom. Personally I mostly enjoyed the setting. It does also expand on one cool Xcom feature. The part in Xcom 2 where your soldiers can get captured and rescued. In PD you can save captured soldiers but also capture enemy soldiers and recruit them, or brainwash them and insert a bomb into them that will detonate when they return to their HQ.

For the most part though it doesn't feel like a great use of time. Like any tactics campaign it's relatively long and it's not deep and varied enough to warrant such a length.

One thing worth mentioning is that PD2 is not a tactics game, it's a third person stealth game. I put it in the list because I have no idea how it will turn out

          >One thing worth mentioning is that PD2 is not a tactics game, it's a third person stealth game.
Oh, for fricks sake. I liked PD1. In a sequel, I wanted more of that, not an entirely different fricking genre.

            Anonymous

I would probably prefer a third person game because they already showed what they could do with a tactics game. I didn't like it nearly as much as Invisible Inc. The problem for me is that now we have to endure a cheesy spy story with some generically named protagonist instead of all the unique storylines that form in an Xcom-like game

I forgot to include Shadows of Doubt in the upcoming list, which is probably the most interesting of all. Also I should say that I kind of hate the ninja aesthetic and enjoy games with that less, so when I recommend Mark of the Ninja that means it's very good

I can't remember clearly since it's been so long since I fixed it, but I'm pretty sure there's a steam guide that tells you how to change the controls to a more modern configuration. Also everyone plays on the hardest difficulty because it gives you more objectives and makes the missions longer and more fun

The unofficial patches aren't needed to make the game launch, they're just needed to get the game running at modern resolutions.

Sort of, yes. It's very assassin's creed sort of stealth however, where it's there, it's an option, but tends to lean more on hit-and-run.
If I were to say anything about it, it's more of the tactician's stealth. You're using stealth for intelligence, then using that, and striking from stealth as a force multiplier. First game still has a good bit of outright stealth. Second game is a lot more varied, for better and worse.

All that said, it's worth it for the Nemesis system, stealth or otherwise. Second game in particular does a really good job with it, where the first doesn't get it going until post-game

This game is an incredibly underrated stealth game.

It’s also light years ahead of its time, since it does things that nu-Hitman and MGSV did like revisitable sandbox maps and procedurally generated missions, but a decade earlier.

Throw the average zoomer into the sandbox of a stealth game and watch him have a stroke from not having a quest marker refreshing every time he enters a corridor and from not getting XP/currency dopamine rush every time he sticks a probe to a wall. Today's gaymers are such Black personcattle they'd consider freedom-of-approach gameplay to be "dated", because the only freedom they've ever experienced in a modern videogame is going in a murder spree in GTA5 or swiping/cheating some P2W items into GTAO to go on a murderspree against afk or in-mission players.

Anon what you consider "good stealth games" is incredibly objective; answers range wildly from Deus Ex (that has bonuses if you do stealth and/or non-lethal, with dialogue changes), the original Tom Clancy's (may he rest in peace), Tenchu and Desperados.
As a BIG stretch, the mmo Secret World has stealth missions that offer the complete deal: don't get detected, don't set off traps, avoid cameras, hack into computers, look for clues and/or figure out the password yourself because it's not in-game
I remember one of the earlier missions had some offer scream at his team for using plain text passwords and you can find the password paper near the sewer entrance kek
