It didn't. I play mine almost every day. once I go to my room to get ready for bed. Shits cozy

I have a 3060ti PC, but I can't take it on a plane or move it to my bed. Thats why I got it, also easy emulation

This is fricking wrong, the reason I buy 95% of all my games on PC is so I have control over the graphics. I didn't buy a 3060ti so I could play 60fps 1080p on Medium.

No, its closing in on 2 million units and still selling more in a week than most other handheld PCs sell in their whole run.
Right now they're on pace to outsell the previous best selling open platform gaming system of all time.

Its only a question of how long Valve keeps this system spec for.

        >Its only a question of how long Valve keeps this system spec for.
Probablly a quite a long time as PC parts have gotten rather expensive, namely videocards as both AMD and Nvidia seems to refuse to release $200-300 price point cards anymore.
The Deck legit is the best bang for the buck with PC gaming at the moment.

        >Its only a question of how long Valve keeps this system spec for.
How much would a new SoC improve framerates in games? Zen 4 is amazing but RDNA3 turned out to be a flop: it's definitely faster than RDNA2, but not THAT much faster. At least on discrete GPUs, we don't really know how RDNA3 performs at low power on a monolithic die.
Would a, let's say, +30-40% performance boost be worth releasing a completely new model for? Maybe they'll do a 6nm refresh? Would a simple refresh even be that much cheaper than an actual new SoC?

        >it has a mobile phone chip it's not even close to being as powerful as the deck
This is what Valve drones actually believe
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adreno
        https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/steam-deck-gpu.c3897

I don't get it, are you trying to compare teraflops? On two different GPU architectures? That's not how it works. The 3090Ti has 70% more FP32 TFLOPS than the 6950 XT, but they perform more or less the same in games.

And even if you're right, what can you even play on a phone? Genshin Impact?

          Anonymous

Because the Deck uses a custom SOC yes it would be cheaper to get a refresh on a new process than engineering an entirely new chip.
Don't expect an annual Deck with an entirely new SOC. Expect a 3 or 5 year life cycle.

Valve didn't really put their whole weight behind it, more of a novelty product than a commitment to compete. To that end it does fine. As for why wasnt it more popular, I presume the average steam user doesnt care about linux capabilities and the most popular PC games are already best played mouse + keyboard anyways.

I unironically thought it was a hit, ya know with how preorders were handled and seeing you had to wait a year to get one at some point.

    But only 1.x million sold?
    That's kinda lame no?

I mean the WiiU sold 4mio in its first year.
I vastly overestimated the Decks popularity.

Although I think in the first few months there was a lot of shilling going on too.

      >But only 1.x million sold?
      >That's kinda lame no?

Comparing Deck to a console is silly. Steam Deck is an enthusiasts product, while consoles are a "casual" product; you plug it in and play the game. Steam Deck is a Linux based handheld PC with a focus on gaming. 85% of people who would buy a console would return the Steam Deck the second they try to load a game and it doesn't work. They wouldn't even consider googling the answer let alone start using the Terminal to attempt to fix their problem.

So comparing Deck to anything other than its chink counterparts is a completely unfair way to measure its success.

        Anonymous

        >But only 1.x million sold?
They hit the first million after about 6 months of volume production, current pace is one million about every 4 months.

Keep in mind Valve is doing things differently from the established consoles. They'll often start production a year or more in advance so they can have a million or more available right out of the gates for the retail battles that ensue as everybody tries to get their hands on it.
Valve basically just gave everybody numbers and started sending systems out as soon as they were produced.

Don't be surprised when the Deck starts selling even more units after it starts hitting retail for Christmas this year.

Not really, considering this is not a console and is tearing apart its own competition of handheld PCs on top of being overall very well received, this is actually a fairly decent to good performance for the time being.
If they can keep up the momentum they might get pretty good lifetime sales, and the most important thing about the Deck is that it's opening the market for that kind of platform model in the first place, whether it underperforms or not it already succeeded in making the wider market accept the idea of handheld PCs as a suitable platform for games.

Does valve consider it a success?
Wondering if they keep working on proton etc. and thus improve linux gaming.

          Anonymous

They've had linux engineers on payroll for a decade before the Steam Deck existed. So probably. Gabe seems to have a personal vendetta against microsoft.

          Anonymous

Even after the original Steam Machines only sold about 200k units, Valve continued working on the underpinnings of SteamOS like the AMD Mesa drivers, and started work on Proton when it became clear that companies simply were not going to move on from win32 and legacy D3D.
Steam Deck can be thought of as a third generation of the Steam Machine concept, and it has essentially addressed all of the issues even if its still not quite at the point of being a total console experience.

With the fact Microsoft with Windows 11 has continued their path towards ending the PC platform as we know it, I seriously doubt Valve will just give up.

Including install time, also including learning to use Wine and later fiddling with Lutris.
It was mostly 90s shit not found on steam like Zoo Tycoon and Star Wars The Phantom Menace from 99.

Bought a deck when my computer was broken, got my computer fixed, haven't touched my deck in a month. if i want to play PC games I just play on my PC, and when i go out I have no time for games. When I'm in bed I'm sleeping and generally handhelds are just uncomfortable to play because you have to be constantly looking down and holding it up. I don't mind having it and not needing it because who knows what the future holds but I can't see myself using it while my computer is just better.

Do you know that you can stream the game from your computer to your deck? 1080p60 at Ultra settings, despite deck supports 800p. 8 hours battery. Yeah you need a good wifi.

Both of you are poorgays for not having raw denim instead of that mall tier chink shit, even N&F, I'm not even asking you to wear Momotaros.

Notice I also said N&F, but yes, Momotaros are considered to be very high quality denim. It has nothing to do with being Japanese, it's just how it is, which is why their most basic collabs are like $350 to begin with, plus a 10+ year life with proper care. But why would Ganker know this, you couldn't tell the difference between Clarks and Iron Rangers

Why do you keep lying all the time?
Valve does keep to support their hardware products and discontinued ones (controller, Steam link, Steam Machine, etc...)

My OG Steam Controller still works perfectly, and Valve still has support for it in Steam.
This is the whole reason Valve has gone all-in on open source drivers.
No more having to depend on flakey partners like Nvidia.
