Why, despite not differing a whole from From's offerings of the past yen years or so, was Elden Ring such an astronomical success in a way that their past games weren't?

snowball effect. with every entry, the series became more popular. combine that with normalgay bait such as GRRM and open world, you've got a recipe for success.

each success built off the last and increased the hype for the next project until the series finally went mainstream

Open world games are popular with normalgays.
The hype for the game reached internet meme status, resulting in stupid articles about the subreddit and shit that made more normalgays aware of the game.
It didn't crash and burn tragically on release like every other recent AAA title and actually got praised to high heaven by literally everyone so even MORE normalgays took notice.

Open world sells to western people better
The game is easier if you engage with most of its content
99% of available items/builds trivialize it with only 1% making it actually hard to experienced people with this genre
It can be played coop easily
Martin’s involvement helped with hype building since at the time his name was a big deal when it first was announced

This was dark souls 3 for plebs. And "for plebs" was the major point in the marketing campaign.

        >dark souls 3 is dark souls 3 for plebs
It really do be like that. DS3forFree was just an ebin mashup of prior soulsborne games.

The same reason as netflix cartoons like arcane and edgerunners. The same reason as monster hunter.

If you spend enough on marketing, and dump everything at once, the initial popularity will cause popularity reverberations where people not sold on the game before will buy into it since so many other people did. If you do it properly the mass influx of new people will drown out the people realizing it's shit until eventually dies and nobody even remembers it

          Honestly this
MHW sold super fricking well for that reason, even if the gameplay, mechanics and UI are still very clunky for AAA standards

From the perspective of detail, build variety, animations, combat, worldbuilding, size and scope, Elden Ring is probably the best game ever made. There's never been a game as big that also was a 10/10 in every area, every boss, every tiny detail. It pulls off the feeling of being "world-sized" in a way that's never been done before, because the details of the world are so immaculate, despite its immense scale.

Theres no shortage of consoomers that just buy every new big game that gets hyped without really looking into what it is.
I saw a lot of crying on social media about Elden Ring for basically just being another souls game. This was blindingly obvious if you looked at just 2 sconds of gameplay but these morons rarely even do that.
They saw a CGI trailer or a poster with 10/10 score on it and just decided it was for them.
Probably why I've seen like 50 copies in my local second hand store too.
