It did fine, selling over a million for a new IP is great, it just didn't do splatoon or MK numbers so the team went back to working on MK. We'll probably get an ARMs 2 on Switch 2 or something.

Fighting game fans don't buy Nintendo consoles, and Nintendo fans don't know how fighting games work. I saw a lot of people complain that ARMS didn't have any exploration or an adventure mode. That is your audience.

I blame the fact that the main 2 character designs, Spring Man and Ribbon Girl, look extremely cheap and unappealing.

Sold quite well as a launch window game (>2M I think) but was a little too simple beyond the nuance of arm choice and curving punches (the latter being much easier with the more gimmicky motion control). Fun game, great music, excellent character designs, got free updates for a while, just didn't have staying power without a shakeup. The cancelled comic hurts, could've been something interesting.

They're 8/10 designs in a roster of nonstop 10s but I get your point.

ARMS has far and away one of the best rosters a new IP fighting game has ever had from a design standpoint. I can't think of one I even find mediocre, Ribbon Girl being the worst of the bunch.

Arms badly needed a strong single player to learn the ropes, something you could play for hours before getting into the multiplayer.

It didn't "fail" it actually exceeded their expectations and they gave it more content then it would've received otherwise.

  12. 1 year ago

    It simply doesn't play well.
The basic concept is that you throw a punch and then that arm is unavailable for the time it takes it to travel back and forth, while this happens you also can't dodge or move well at all.
This is inherently frustrating, and outside of some speedrunner autismo play, most players experience is that whoever throws the first punch is at a disadvantage.
I don't know if it's competent at a high level, but in my experience playing it with random people by just giving them a switch controller, the first impression is usually that they feel sludged down and like it's out of their control or don't get it.

and it couldn't even get that right because it's a fighting game but the cast don't even get to talk for themselves. Not even a win quote screen with a text box.

compared to splatoon it lacks fundamental things:
    >fighting game instead of shooter so automatically less appealing
    >its default motion controls go back to the wii era of being a pointless gimmick while splatoon's gyro aiming is a genuinely better option than stick aiming
    >utterly unfun as a party game unlike smash or power stone
    >way too shallow to keep the interest of competitive autists
    >terrible, terrible spectator game, fights are mind numbingly boring to watch
it's a shame because the presentation was really good, the sort of capoeira boxing with mutant superheroes setup was really unique but it's a nothing game and I hope they don't waste any more time and energy on a sequel

      >>its default motion controls go back to the wii era of being a pointless gimmick while splatoon's gyro aiming is a genuinely better option than stick aiming.
ARMS motion controls are a better option than stick aiming for its mechanics and design as well. Your grabs have a broader span, you have independent control over each ARM, and you can direct each in a different direction in subtle or major ways. I have never had a a failed input, the aim is precise, and the controls don't constitute waggle unless you consider rapid punches when doing a super.
Also, it isn't shallow. Deceptively simple.
Also, it's a great party game, and Party Mode is still active to this day.

        >ARMS motion controls are a better option than stick aiming for its mechanics and design as well.
this is demonstrably false by the very simple fact the overwhelming majority of the competitive scene used the regular pro controller while it's the opposite in splatoon where all comp players use gyro (yes I've followed the arms competitive scene for a while, give me my time back)

          Anonymous

That isn't false, it's the mechanical reality that playing the game makes blatantly evident for the reasons outlined after that quote. It's undeniably better and expands your arsenal. Also, not all competitive Splatoon players use Gyro, despite it being an intuitive and more wieldy option.

*also, another Motion advantage: independent character movement and ARM movement, although the value is slight when an Arm is out.

            >Also, not all competitive Splatoon players use Gyro
it's like 99% of them and none of the top players, the actual best players in the world use stick aiming

also good job completely ignoring the fact if motion controls were truly the superior form of control then we'd see arms competitive players use them but they don't so I'll accept your concession

              >the fact if motion controls were truly the superior form of control then we'd see arms competitive players use them
Bullshit. YOU are ignoring the blatant advantages that are objectively present with Motion controls.

                >Nice claim.
what? chocopero, the guy who obtained the highest points in ranked in the game's history uses motion, the entire gg boyz team who won the two splatoon E3 world tournaments use gyro, thatsrb2dude, kiver, wadsm all the well known competitive players and youtubers in the west use gyro and insist on the importance of learning it if you want to elevate your gameplay, it's just a fact

I've never seen the equivalent from competitive arms players and for a simple reason, motion doesn't bring any meaninful advantage to a fight or else you could be sure pega, chateau, gore magala, astroninja etc would all have used them

to me it's because it demonstrates how frustrating nintendo are

it's a low content, shallow game with a pointless control scheme that comes from them refusing to let go of their wii era shovelware approach that made them tons of money which forces inputs to be simplistic enough to accomodate them but makes the game less interesting as a result

an actual competitive fighting game by nintendo's core teams could actually have been very interesting if they nailed it like they did with splatoon but instead we got that bastardized half assed game that does nothing particularly good and is the last significant new IP from EAD we've got in the switch era, just a waste

They would've needed a splatfest event equivalent and regular costume and weapon drops over time if they wanted to keep it going. Maybe some shitty currency to collect for a token reward with grinding.

outside of fighting games aren't usually known for selling a lot, i think part of the problem was the depth of the game was locked behind some kind of weird gacha minigame.
having a list of arms to switch and counter an opponent or bring out a unique strategy is fun however it happens way to late into playing through the base at times bare bones game.

Then why they cancelled the (already finished) visual novel?

      Anonymous

People liked to say it was dead real early despite potentially never actually having played it. Oddly enough, it's still virile now outside of maybe Ranked, and you can get a full Party room pretty often. Indeed, it has a great Friend mechanism where you can join people in your Friend's List off a menu, meaning you can always populate a room if your friends are online.

I wouldn't say they're shitting out Splatoon, but I can only suppose that 3 came out this gen because the narrative content they wanted to build would not be as well accommodated by DLC (install base limit of Splatoon 2 owners). That, and maybe they want a narrative fresh start next gen.
