Why did Capcom let Kamiya and Mikami leave?

Why did Capcom let Kamiya and Mikami leave? Why did they let such massive talent go without doing what they could to keep them?

It seems kind of insane to me, I guess we got stuff like Bayonetta, Evil Within and Automata out of it, which is cool, but part of me wishes they were still at Capcom.

Capcom has had a comeback in recent years, but I miss the days of "big name" devs, I couldn't name you any names of current Capcom off the top of my head, it's all kind of anonymous now.

So, what's the story of their departure?

You can't stop people from leaving your company, especially if your workers are sick of it, which Kamiya and Mikami were

Also neither of them had anything to do with Automata

But if I were Capcom, I would strike a deal with them so as they wouldn't want to leave.

Did Okami and God Hand really flop that badly? Seems insane to me not to give the guys at least one more chance for the PS3/360 era.

Automata was still made by the developer Kamiya founded, even if he didn't work directly on it.

God Hand flopping wasn't a big deal because it was a low budget affair. Capcom and Clover expected big things from Okami so yeah it was a flop.

Mikami left because management lied to him by putting RE4 on PS2 behind his back and Mikami had a grudge with PS2.

Getting Clover Studios to themselves to experiment and have fun with is an incredible opportunity and some of my favorite games ever have come out of it.

There is no such thing as a "superstar developer"; games are a team effort between the director and his team.

Mikami, Kamiya and the late Noboru Sugimura of Flagship are my favorite dudes that worked there.

Between Mikami and Kamiya though it's a bit tough to choose, but I'd say Mikami.

Kamiya. He's always pushing boundaries, creating entirely new genres/concepts, creating incredibly iconic games, and innovating the gaming industry.
The others are lazy, pumping out lazy sequels or spiritual sequels, trying to ride the coattails of their previous projects; they're creatively bankrupt.

        >Saying this about Dragon's Dogma

I'll give you Kamiya is far more experimental and creative but Itsuno's work on DMC set the standard for the genre as well as doing real neat stuff with DD. Mikami is no slouch either with RE and God Hand.

My problem with Mikami is that he made RE and then did nothing but RE. PN03 and God Hand were interesting, but not good.
And at this point, it doesn't matter. He's trapped at Bethesda/Microsoft and they won't let him make interesting projects like God Hand anymore.

The most overrated, you mean. It's just as bad as Gears of War, but with even more stupid decisions.
Mikami was trying to show that the Japanese can make good shooters, but he failed rather spectacularly. It didn't introduce anything new to the genre.
What's even funnier is that Max Payne 3 came out shortly after Vanquish and it is by far the best game the genre has to offer in terms of raw gameplay.

I'm not your boogeyman. Max Payne 3 is just better designed.
Melee attacks and movement are the only things Vanquish has going for it, but RE6 executed those mechanics way better. Not to mention that Vanquish will take away most of your options on the highest difficulty, so it just turns into a generic cover shooter.

It was literally mentioned in DMC 3142 interview.

thats kamiyas special talent. Excluding shit until the very end until the team or some random whim causes him to decide to put it in. Pretty famously multi-morphs would not have been in W101 but they decided to simply put them in towards the final build without nintendos permission. >>I don't understand why you think Kamiya completely changed teams. The entirety of Clover went to Platinum.

That only makes my question that much more important, why would Capcom let ALL that talent leave?

One single game bombs and you let that much talent leave? Makes no sense to me.

If Capcom was being too creatively stricting, they should have... lightened up so all that talent doesn't leave.

It just doesn't make any sense to me why you would let so much talent that gave you so much success in the past just walk out the door, for all you know they go on to create the next billion dollar franchise, why let them bail so soon?

The talent at Japanese devs are great, the suits are fucking retarded, see also: Konami.

All I'm saying is it's a shame those guys who were such key talents during Capcom's 5th and 6th gen periods were gone by the 7th.

God Hand was cheap and came out right on the cusp of the PS3 and Wii launching, why would they expect it to light up the sales charts?

I would have given them one more chance for the PS3/360 era, you have brand new consoles but you let talent that served you well for so long just walk away before using?

In fact, why the fuck were they tasked with late stage PS2 projects and not 360/PS3 projects anyway? Mikami's follow up Resident fucking Evil 4 is... a cheap PS2 game? I know Okami is well acclaimed, but Dead Rising came out around the same time and was a hit because people had largely moved on from the PS2 by fall of 2006.

Certainly if they came out with bombs during the PS3/360 era it'd be a lot more understandable, but the suits at these companies are short sighted idiots and the companies succeed despite them.

While we're on the subject of Capcom and the year 2006, it also pisses me off how they pissed away the dev team that made the Maximo games with fucking Final Fight Streetwise.

God Hand wasn't the only game that flopped.
Okami originally flopped, but I'm fairly sure the HD remaster is doing pretty well.
Viewtiful Joe 2 and the other VJ sequels flopped even after Capcom tried to push the series with an anime and a bunch of other shit.
I'm also sure there were a few cancelled projects.

Clover wasn't worth it anymore, none of their games sold well, so Capcom just pulled the plug.

I didn't know VJ2 bombed but not surprised, it felt like more of the same too soon, the only real stand out thing was playing as Silvia.

Plus releasing VJ2 in the hilariously crowded fall 2004 season, what were they thinking? Probably would have gone over better in 2005 (or been overshadowed by RE4 like almost everything else Capcom that year)

Anyway, sucks that quality is no guarantee of financial success, too bad Capcom wasn't willing to lose money for a little bit longer.

          >RE wasnt aways a gaijin game
Gaijin love it, doesn't mean it's made to appeal to them.
RE7 is so obviously catered to Americans it didn't even shock me to find out that the writer from F.E.A.R came on to regurgitate his story.
          >should stop sucking morons
That doesn't make sense. If anything my statement means that I hate Americans so I should stop sucking off Nips.

One of main inspirations of RE1 was George Romero zombie movies and the games are full of western references(Matilda,Killer sever being the T1 pistol)Cmon bro.

RE1 is inspired by American media of course, but 7 is written by an American. What is there to not understand?

And why they choose a american writter? To improve RE western roots...becaus its a western inspired franchise. What its soo hard to understand?

                >To improve RE western roots
That doesn't make any sense. RE is made by Japs, by letting an American writer on with 7 they appealed to Americans. It's that simple.
Silent Hill is also inspired by American media but are you now going to excuse an American dev team taking over because it has "western roots"? That's retarded.

RE7 was not written by an american, it was still written by Japanese people at Capcom, the guy you're thinking of was just a consultant on the story.
                https://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2016/12/27/producer-masachika-kawata-spills-his-guts-about-resident-evil-7.aspx
                >The base script was still written by our Japanese script writer actually, but we also wanted to have an English native's perspective to have a final check in making sure the story worked for the West.

Also, RE7's story was pretty much just a retelling of RE1's story (bioweapon with mass destructive potential infects a remote area and there's a corporate conspiracy in the background), with some of Sweet Home's story (vengeful female spirit(ish) haunts a house), and maybe a tad of RE5 (man looks for woman, woman is possessed and they fight).

                Anonymous

Only thing that bothers me about RE7's story is taken on it's own, how little you know about why it's happening.

There's a bioweapon on the loose, but who knows who it's from.

Just seems a little too vague when compared to the older games.

RE8 wasn't much better in that regard either.

They're way into the mystery box storytelling method a little too much now i'd say. I fully expect that at the end of its arc, not much is being revealed story-wise.

Nier Automata has nothing to do with Kamiya or Mikami, plus it's largely spearheaded by SE rather than Platinum. If you want to see a Platinum Nier game look at Babylon Falls, a game Platinum wanted to make because they thought people enjoyed the combat in Automata and not the giant robot ass and the narrative gimmicks

The only times Platinum has ever done anything worthwhile is when they pick up other people's scraps like with MGR and work in conjunction with more competent developers and designers

    Aight let me explain.
Back when they left, Capcom had a sequel mandate that stated 80-90% of projects had to be sequels. Once that was in place, Kamiya and Mikami as well as Inaba left Capcom due to Capcom putting too many restrictions on their games.
Besides Itsuno Capcom has no talent lef to speak of. If he left it would unironically be over. Even with Itsuno its telling that all the games of note they’ve pumped out is sequels, barely any new ip’s. At this rate it’ll ensure Capcom will always be behind and will run out of rehashes eventually.

Most stuff that really made people go ZOMG at that time is good but overrated, but it was such a dire time for games that anything good stood out that much more.

The trouble with Vanquish for me is the sci fi theme is so generic, maybe if you were a sexy girl zooming around instead of a guy ala PNO3.

    >Why did Capcom let Kamiya and Mikami leave?
Coz capcom own the brand names. Talent doesn't matter.
No gamers know who makes games anyway, as long as they see the new brand name/logo on the box they will buy it.
    >So, what's the story of their departure?
They wanted to make games they were actually interested in. Rather than being told what to do.

Here's a question for you all, if Mikami had stayed, would RE5 have been the final RE game and what became Evil Within instead be Capcom's own successor to RE?

    Better question
Which one is the bigger hack?
