fpbp, the only mobile games were basic ones like tetris and snake.

Well it was a good machine, and an affordable one.
It didn't use batteries which was a big plus.
The main thing was that it was something that parents would buy for their kids individually. So there would be multiple DS's in one household.
Where you would never see that for like an Xbox.

      also this

      it had fun video games

        and the ds had:
        Mario Kart DS
        Mario 64 DS
        Two Mario RPGs
        Three Castlevania games
        Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum
Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver
        Pokemon Black and White/2
        Three Phoenix Wright games
        Four Professor Layton games
        Two Advance Wars games
Two Final Fantasy remakes that are in 3D
        Radiant Historia
        The World Ends With You
        Ghost Trick
        Hotel Dusk
        Contra 4
        3 Dragon Quest remakes
        Dragon Quest 9
        Elite Beat Agents
Kirby Super Star Ultra, Squeak Squad, Mass Attack
        and much, much more.
and you want to tell me that the PSP has ANYTHING on this beast that provides both quality AND quantity?

          >and you want to tell me that the PSP has ANYTHING on this beast that provides both quality AND quantity?
          Hey whoa buddy
DS had the PSP beat in quantity, sure, but the PSP was also no slouch.
          Lest we forget, it had
          3 Monster Hunter games
          4 Armored Core games
2 Metal Gear Solid games AND 2 Metal Gear Acid games
          A VASTLY superior JRPG library
And A FRICK-TON of remakes of PS1 games, on top of basic PS1 backwards-compatibility

And also, was the best emulation machine money could buy, for a solid decade there

They were both amazing machines though, to be clear

The answers about handhelds and gimmicks are all correct, but in hindsight, the DS had maybe one of the best video game libraries at all times.
Yeah, you had your obvious AAA system sellers like in , but you could honestly pick a DS game at random and nine times out of ten it'll be some cult classic.
          >Contact
          >Draglade
          >Spectrobes
          >Trace Memory
          >Moon
          >Infinite Space
          >Lunar Knights
          >Shiren
          >Starfy
          >Feel the Magic
          >Radiant Historia
          >Jump Stars
          >Aliens Infestation
          >Knights in the Nightmare
I can go on all day. And that's without mentioning beloved but lesser known franchises like Digimon, EBA/Ouendan, PMD, Star Fox, TWEWY, SMT, etc.

Everyone always compares the PSP's AAA system sellers with the DS's, but the DS had infinitely more to offer.

Well, DS was very good, but also PSP had:
          >Persona 1
          >Persona 2
          >Persona 3 Portable
          >Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7
          >Monster Hunter FU
          >MGS: Peace Walker
          >MGS: Portable Ops
          >Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
          >Final Fantasy Tactics
          >GTA: Liberty City Stories
          >GTA: Vice City Stories
          >Patapon
          >Valkyria Chronicles 2
          >Daxter
          >Jeanne D’Arc
          >Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
          >Half-Minute Hero
          >Ys Seven
          >Gran Turismo
          >Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy
          >God of War: Ghost of Sparta
          >God of War: Chains of Olympus
          >Lumines: Puzzle Fusion
It was essential to have both consoles.
Man, I’m sad now. What the frick happened to video games? Everything just sucks nowadays.

            >Man, I’m sad now. What the frick happened to video games? Everything just sucks nowadays.
            Production costs.

According to an interview with Nintendo on Hachimaki, the shittiest DS games cost about USD $50k to make, up to $500k for the upper-end AAA titles.

Meanwhile, the lower end of 3DS games cost on average $840k to make, with the higher end pushing over $2 million. Switch games start at $1 million and can pass $20 million.

On top of that, game prices have stayed the same despite rising development costs and despite inflation. This means that not only are Switch games upwards of forty times more expensive to develop, but they also need to sell exponentially more copies to keep up with those costs. So it's much harder to justify a risk when you also NEED forty times the sales just to break even.

Excellent games all around and from all genres. PSP was only good for bad ports of movie games, Dissidia and MHFU in comparison.

Because they were the cheapest console you could buy for a good long while.
Also there was a big push to market towards people who don't normally buy video games. My Grandmother owned a DS and loved Animal Crossing, and hasn't touched a video game console before or, I believe, since.

Also handhelds always sold better than home consoles (up to that point, phones changed that, obviously).

as a kid I was always simultaneously really jealous of the kid that had a PSP while also having no fricking idea what you actually play on a PSP. I ended up getting one for christmas eventually and I don't think I put anything on it other than PS1 games, which honestly portable PS1 still really kicks ass.

DS was a culture, it was more than just a portable. They advertised it as this fashionable little thing that you would take to the cafeteria early in the morning to play some Mario Kart with people all over the world while having a nice cup of coffee, I mean it also was the time when Wi-Fi was starting to take off and public places with hotspots were the hottest shit. Plus it's easy to forget how mindblowing the touchscreen was when this came out.
Also I remember a lot of titles and IPs on the DS would get hyped up as if they were big AAA releases, stuff like Prof. Layton, Ace Attorney, Trauma Center, Ghost Trick, 999, Etrian Oddysey, Meteos...
