FF7 fans whining about Intergrade are moronic.
The game isn't a remake after the half-way point. It's an entirely standalone game in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII franchise, and it's better for it.
A Remake could *never* match the expectations and nostalgia of original fans.
But a new game doesn't need to adhere so conservatively to the original.
Rebirth coming out next will de-rail the FF7 train completely.

It's literally impossible to "become" a CRT manufacturer these days. The machinery necessary to manufacture them isn't produced anymore. Not to mention modern environmental regulations would probably not allow you to produce consumer grade CRTs.

There are CRTs still being produced in limited amounts for legacy and specific use cases but the due to demand they are about 3k for new ones. Its sadly a technology that has been lost to time due the nature of demand vs production of scale. CRTs are far more impressive technology wise than we give credit.

High refresh looks good on blurry LCDs, imagine how good it looks on a 240hz CRT that already looks so good at 60hz.

High Hz look good on LCD because it shortens the interval between frames, reducing blurriness and ghosting, dum-dum.
CRT phosphors have extremely short decay times, which is exactly what gives CRTs their characteristic motion clarity.

You can easily make a CRT do that by using interlacing. If you turn the resolution down low on a high quality CRT you can get 240hz without interlacing as well.

I'm convinced the industry astroturfed "burn-in" on purpose just so people could argue about it in old terms and be misinformed. Burn in on old CRTs or Plasmas was not nearly as bad, and could be reasonably mitigated or even reversed.
The reality is worse because what OLED actually does is burn OUT. The R, G, and B parts of the pixels literally slowly die as they are used. It is unavoidable and irrationally pisses me off that we went straight into a technology detour instead of moving right to microLED.

from what I have read, the tech and art are probably lost forever. Those very skilled craftsmen blowing glass never got the chance to teach a new generation to skillfully craft those screens. Not sure if that can be mimicked with machinery. Moreover, the supply chains are nonexistent for the tech parts as well. It is over. Cherish yours till the day it dies. That's all you can do really. Maybe 4k 120-240hz OLED can compete but idk

Every display nowadays has backlight strobing, it reduces brightness but you don't really care about that when your display is 600+ nits and burns into your eyes. with strobing, even my shitty $400 165hz display creates a better and sharper image than CRT in the picture, because i don't get this nasty ghosting behind the spaceship

Literally doesn't matter you can't see individual frames at 60hz and especially not 120+hz.
Ghosting is not a meaningful problem for visuals.

You can clearly see the CRT has color issues. Modern OLED and newer screens have far larger dynamic ranges than CRTs ever did allowing for better 'color correctness'.

The only reason to use a CRT is to play old sub-pixel based games that depended on the scan lines to generate the images properly.

Vinyl is cool and up until some years ago, CDs and digital releases were usually posted in the form of inferior masters.
Today vinyl , the resurgence of tape, etc. mostly exists as a popular way to collect music physically, and exists for the hobby.
Yes, lossless digital masters probably have better pure sound quality, but unless you're a hipster homosexual that think vinyl just "Le sounds better" you know that's not the reason you collect it.
Vinyl also stores better longterm than CDs, because it doesn't physically deteriorate the same way, if that matters to you.

VHS however is pure JUNK, was never at any point available in superior masters to other formats, demagnetization means terrible shelf-life, and is purely held up by a fake bubble economy (because rating companies a fricking leeches.)

CRT, like vinyl, is a niche for purists.
Older pixel titles *do* look much better because they were built on the limitations for the platform. Understandably they're sought-after for this reason.

Using CRTs for modern games is just a MEME and has *zero* benefit. No. None.

he probably means mastering, much like old animus and older consoles look absolutely wonderful on CRT because all of the colors, shapes, and overall image choices were made with CRT output in mind. Of course it's ridiculous to apply the same logic to OLEDs vs LCDs, especially now that we have HDR that is pretty much natural territory for OLED.

It's also hilarious that he considers mastering differences between LCD and OLED, but not between LCD and CRT other way around while consuming LCD-optimized content on a CRT

LCDs are lighter, cheaper, easier to manufacture, slimmer, more portable, able to easily mount onto walls, etc

not to mention we have LCDs with 4k and 8k resolutions and input lag is incredibly minimal at this point on the majority of displays. OLED displays also have true blacks. what advantage does a CRT have in 2023 besides the fuzzing effect on dithering/pixel art which can be emulated on high resolution monitors?

you don't want an adapter, it will add input lag.

The reason a CRT is not sample and hold is because it is literally just a bright dot that goes from left to right while varying in brightness. There's no sampling because the image is drawn directly onto the phosphors from a pure electronic signal.
A sample and hold display has a digital frame buffer that takes the electronic signal and waits until it has an entire frame, then it changes the pixels that need to be changed, or holds the ones that stay the same.
That's the difference, one is purely analog while the other has inherent input lag.

That being said you're right that FED and SED would flicker, but they would do that to reduce the power usage and burn-in. It would mean the pixel response time would be as good as any other CRT though, so if they had made it onto the market they'd probably be the preferred displays for PC gaming. They would have the benefits of a modern HD display while having perfect motion quality.

People actively gave on glass display panels SEDs with no input lag, no motion blur, perfect blacks, colors, etc, just because their weak little arms couldn't put them on a table.

input lag under triple digits barely matters

i have made the mistake of buying a cheap Phillips 144hz VA, the input lag and the blur/ghosting are so awful, i've considered an IPS but thought the contrast was trash, but maybe i've made the wrong call then.
it's like a lose/lose situation with lcds always.

          >ctrl+f "lag"
          >6 occurances
Ganker, today, has no idea how much "input lag" was the HUGE "gamer" argument against LCD back in the day. Even between two different CRT. It was always, always about lag. Sure, people liked the idea of "big screen" but it was lag, lag, lag, lag, lag, lag. It was what PC gamers would always bring up against consoles or the use of their monitors! It FILLED the thread about what television/monitor you were using! Lag!
          >You have xxxmicroseconds of lag!?!?!?!?!
          >You'll NEVER beat me in (shooter/fighter)!!!!!!!!!!
          >It must be AWFUL to experience SO MUCH LAG

And yet, today, it basically isn't even brought up. I imagine the fact everything is "online" is the reason for that, now. Who cares about a little lag?

mention, since we're talking about television lag. "Input" was more about console-warring and using plug-in controllers or "wireless" controllers. Newer consoles were literally coming with ONLY wireless remote controllers and it was infuriating for the "older" gamer, back then.

But, well, television lag was, of course, still an enormous factor against getting some new flatscreen, non-crt television. Plus they were way too expensive and wouldn't last more than a couple years!! etc. Lag, lag, lag!

However you can't fix having a backlight at all, it is an inherent flaw with using liquid crystals that don't light up themselves.

I've basically settled on just using IPS for games and dealing with the subpar black and glow. Always playing in a lit room helps mitigate the glow and black levels to an extent.

Phosphors have nothing to do with if a display is sample and hold or not.
The reason CRTs aren't sample and hold is because they draw lines that vary in brightness. Sample and hold displays instead have pixels, and the entire screen updates when it receives the entire frame buffer.
In the case of FED and SED, each subpixel is in the "hold pattern" by having a constant voltage which causes a constant brightness. This is the same thing an LCD does, the only difference is that one holds a liquid crystal in a certain pattern, while the other is causing phosphors to emit. Both are sample and hold.

              Anonymous

afaik it's the fact that the lit dots quickly decay and don't get lit up again until next frame that makes things clear on CRTs.

It looked cooler and was lighter weight making it easier to mount on a wall than old TVs. I remember thinking during any dark screen moment on those earliest flats "I can see the LED sources behind the LCD". Its getting better but after finding a CRT, its nowhere close yet. So weird that we have to downgrade because manlets admit out loud they cant lift 32 inch CRTs. Literally willing to pay more money for less tech because "so heavy"

      Anonymous

Imagine giving up a cool concept of having a phosphor gun shoot inside your screen because people found it "inconvenient and too heavy". This moronic notion of ease of accessibility/convenience and hyper efficiency has ruined products and has made everything soulless. I remember when John Browning said that everything from guns to household appliance is going to be ruined because people refused to adapt to the product and now the product has to adapt to the people even though it's inferior.

I pulled out the old CRT monitor I've kept around in case I somehow ever need it to test if it still worked, I was momentarily impressed with the image quality, especially the blacks, browsed Ganker on it for a few laughs, but it becomes instantly obvious why we collectively ditched CRTs the moment you try to lift it, and that was a relatively light PC monitor, not the multi-hundred pound monstrosities people used to have as their television. Like with everything else in life humans collectively pick the easiest path, not the best one. Shame, because it makes you wonder what CRTs might look like today if they'd continued iterating and improving them.

      Anonymous

We picked the wrong path in everything but screen size unless like you said, CRTs kept improving reducing weight and improving tech. I totally admit we werent going any bigger than maybe 42 inches back with the old CRTs and 55inchers' needed handles and a two man crew to pull it off. But the people now saying they cant lift a good 24-32inch TV makes me wonder if they mean the Trinitron exclusively.

Stop moving your television so much.
I mean it. Are you genuinely moving your flatscreen, wall mounted television "a lot?" What in the Heck are you doing that for?

Seriously; even if you had to move it FREQUENTLY, like, ONCE every 3 months (because your wife apparently needs to "re-decorate the living room every season), you're suuuuuuuuuper lame to find moving 30lbs "too much work" or something once every 120 days for a few seconds.

        Anonymous

It's not about me moving it, is all the tvs that the stores, factories, and assembly lines needed to move. You get way more flat panel tvs on the back of a semi truck then you ever could with crts, people aren't joking that the sheer difference in size and weight was one of the main killers of crts. Consumers don't care about relatives specs or hardware differences, they care about how much it costs and how difficult is it to get in their house. This is why the cheaper game console invariably wins each console generation, too.

Most CRTs are cheap (<$50) or free. The only ones that sell for any amount of money grail sets and models you'd find in a television studio.

I own 3 elite CRTs (36KV310, XBR960, Ikegami BVM), and 1 regular leather-grained set from the early 80s. I've actually got a CRT coming from Japan as I write this. The Sony Jackal FX-300, late 70s CRT that looks cool as shit.

Yeah, I've owned LG OLED panels since 2017 starting with the C7. There is no fun in a perfect display. Maybe if the media being shown on it was incredible, but today's media professionals don't make very good content en masse.

You seem to think, "it's magic. What I'm looking at is physical mass that displays color to my eyes at the speed of light!"
But no. That is not how it works.
The same type of logic that claims a leaf "is projecting the color green" without understanding absorption or wavelengths.

As fascinatingly advanced "science" can seem to you, browsing on the anime pornographic website known as Ganker, this was truly being understand and generated creation and invention by humans for so many decades prior, the only thing preventing their creation was literally factory production, not idea.
Anyway, CRT technology works differently than LED and others. ACTUALLY PERCEIVING the same media, IN PERSON, would probably change your mind about "how neat" a video game might look.
Unfortunately, most media (and yes, including film from 100 years ago) is not really designed to showcase technological brilliance. It's designed to look pretty enough that you buy it.

        Anonymous

By the same token, there is "resolution" to keep in mind, too.
As much fun a CRT can be for watching a video game designed and built around being projected on a console with the purpose of being displayed on a CRT (ironic, huh?), you might be more impressed by seeing something being projected at relatively the same "refresh rate" but it's 40x larger. After all, a 17" CRT television... well, just doesn't "look as cool" as a 60" LED display.

Or look as cool as a 50 feet theater projection. And it's not like IMAX have LED screens you're looking at.

CRT television genuinely come from a time of "analog" input. LCD don't.
Which is GREAT for LCD, today; people don't watch broadcast television or play video games designed to be produced inside cartridges. It's a very different input/storage media, and when it's fed through LCD projection, it looks marvelous. But not without its own flaws, of course.

I doubt even 1% of the people who own an LCD television have a VHS cassette tape player.
I'd also imagine that most of the people who still own and regularly use a VHS cassette tape player are also aware that that analog format does not display as nicely on LCD as it does on CRT.
And, for another perspective, I assume those same people watching VHS aren't expecting 4k resolution.

          No?
I was responding to a post an anon made claiming that people spend thousands on CRT televisions and that results in a psychological disorder like "Stockholm's syndrome" as if they're being held captive by their abusive television via over-spending to the point that claim emotional attachment to the device.

But, CRTs don't cost much today (not high demand) and CRT is a technology format that genuinely performs its display function better than other technology formats due to the inherent fact those media products were designed for exactly that display format. It's not illogical, it's extremely logical. In tandem, it's not like that display is extremely "big" though, and the device that performs it is quite heavy by comparison of different visual projectors.

    >inb4 get a CRT monitor instead of TV
Yeah okay but that's too small for a couch setup.

make sure you get a proper scaler, i used something similar on a smaller crt and it looked like shit and had tons of input delay

you can get a tv with component input, preferably also with progressive scan for the games that would use it, and get an old amd/ati graphics card this is because there were modded drivers and emulators that would output a signal that worked safely with televisions and rgb monitors.

If they could figure a way to make them more compact and lightweight they'd probably sell.

have you seen how bright TVs are getting now to meet higher HDR specs? They are way more like staring at the sun than CRTs were.

no, because LCD dont flicker like crazy, being bright is not the problem, flickering is, its what causes eyes strain. Try watching a CRT for 5h, your eyes will burn, but you can easily watch a LCD for the same time

            >because I define it that
            >also, LCD do not flicker at all in display
            >no eye-strain

i really don't see this brought up as often, i've noticed newer lcds just burn your eyes in a slightly dark room even if you set the brightness to 0

crts were cheaper for a very slim period when lcd displays were new tech. once matured lcd became a much cheaper technology comparatively.

You are going to make billions of something, you are going to ship those billions to every place on earth, those billions will fill every building and eventually every landfill. Are you going to chose the technology that is cheaper, lighter, and more efficient or are you going to choose the one with better black levels and motion clarity?

Show me a single CRT that displays the image quality and resolution of an QD OLED 3840x2160 TV that doesn't weigh almost 200lbs and take up 5x the space. I'll wait.

I once picked up my CRT TV while it was on and plugged into an Xbox 360, somehow lay it flat on the floor, and ejaculated onto the screen which I had shrewdly nagicated to be fixated on my Dragon Age Origins character's face
I felt like a moron immediately after

    other than input lag
what makes CRTs better exactly ?

      Anonymous

Two things I can think of off the top of my head. One is brightness. This portion has been somewhat compensated for in recent times with OLED technology, but on a CRT, Black is the absense of light entirely, not just a black-colored light. Secondarily, non-square pixels have massive advantages in certain applications. You just cannot do non-square pixels in any other technology.

CRT Black folk are literally complaining about display technology when things are finally moving along and displays are improving with OLED getting better every year and MicroLED arriving soon.

Retro gaming and CRT's weren't as popular ten years ago. The majority of people screeching about CRT's are just sheepishly following what's popular.

For watching TV, screen size and clarity is king. It doesn't matter if there is any input delay and most films are 24fps. Gaming is an afterthought for most consumers buying a display.

      Anonymous

If anything the slow motion response of LCDs makes 24fps video more bearable to watch since the frames blend into each-other.
With CRTs and Plasma you get the double/triple image effect at 48hz/72hz.
With OLED you get horrible stutter unless you use BFI to simulate CRT/Plasma.

There will be "slow pixel" modes created for 24fps videos for MicroLED in the future. Mark my words, they will somehow find a way to emulate some of LCD's shittiness as an option.

Non-schizo answer: Because convenience is king and most consumers choose it over technical superiority and other aspects.
    >Is Spotify technically the best option to listen to music? Does it over the best possible quality and do you get to keep the music you save there?
    No.
    >Is it more convenient than downloading every album/EP/single manually and putting them on your phone?
    Yes.
    >Is Steam, a digital distribution platform that on paper does only offer you the license to play a video game instead of the actual videogame, the objectively best way to buy your stuff?
    No
    >Is it more convenient than buying tons of physical media cluttering up your living space?
    Yes.

For a desktop monitor, it really has to be. You can't have something that size be completely flat unless you put it really far away.
