Indie 3D platformers start at a baseline of "bad" because they can't iterate on level design well.
Then this one is very ugly, experimentation from someone who has never made anything decent in their life and is just bringing their flavour of mediocre to a place nobody wants to be anyway, and monotonous with one noncompelling string to its bow, and pretty derivative with so many colours and queues taken from Sonic.

So really, it needed to fail and we can all move on.

theres no thought to level design. it's just full of ramps, poles and other gimmicks thrown together randomly. its like they spent months making the physics, but ran out of time and had to throw a bunch of levels together

        Anonymous

        >elaborate
To iterate on 3D levels you basically need to be able to change and remake them on the fly as necessary. At least in the initial stage, because especially if you're making your own navmaps or collision once a level is called done, it's done.

Zero indie devs even blockout levels to go through this process for a clean platforming experience, or prototype levels in any capacity, and instead just sort of make a final cut as they go along. The end result are these platformers with warbling, listless levels with huge pacing drops as giant flat planes are used as filler that should've been iterated out on a design level.

So they're bad, at a baseline. When you do get an okay indie 3d platforming levels it's usually floating shit in a void for this reason (say, Corn Kidz' Tower of Anxiety or a lot of Blue Fire's DLC levels), because they can move blocks around to achieve some decent challenges while maintaining flow, which works but is conceptually boring.

        Anonymous

I've not played a lot of indie platformers, but I remember Wings of Vi having a couple of levels with very poorly thought out platform placement.
Like I recall in one part a platform placed in such a way that you'd always hit the bottom right of it when trying to get to another platform beneath it.

There was a blatant lack of consideration for spacing with it that was incredibly amateur that you really didn't see that often in the era of 2-d platformers probably because they were play tested more thoroughly.

Simply the fact that the game itself is shit. The Sonic Mania Team are hacks that can't actually make something even remotely good now that they don't have 20+ year old level design and sprites to reuse. The color pallette is pure eye cancer because remember muh Knuckles Chaotix and muh Saturn? The gameplay is shit because it's focusing on muh physics because MUH CLASSIC SONIC KINORINO MOMENTUM which leaves a shitty game where the level design is completely irrelevant because the player effortlessly swings and flies over everything.

The main character however is ultimately what sunk the game the hardest. It's just so fricking bad. Genuinely what the frick were they thinking?

      Anonymous

chaotix was 32x not Saturn and sprite art in the saturn was great

It's a tale as old as time.
      >Sonic fan makes really popular fan project
      >decides to make new IP
      >Sonic fans do not follow them
Spark is the only thing that comes close in terms of success. Stuff like Freedom Planet are much more modest in comparison, ultimately because of what I just said. Sonic fans just want Sonic.

      >muh "momentum ruins level design" argument
If your players are skipping your stage using momentum, a mechanic that is completely contingent on using level design to facilitate that act, then which is more to blame? Start by not placing level geometry that allows for it. Make the stages more vertically oriented, so there's not as much to "fly over." Add higher routes that reward players who can skillfully use ramps and the like. I would also argue that being able to soar over a stage after going really fricking fast is actually quite fun. It's part of the reason why people loved Spider-Man 2's movement. The trick with games like Sonic is to make sure that the player can't do that ALL the time. Now, Frontiers' Cyberspace stages are actually a great example of what you're really describing. You can skip 90% of those stages because its level design wasn't made with momentum (or Frontiers' hack version of it anyway) in mind. (Update 3's stages still suffer from the same problem, even if they DID intend for you to fly over the stage with the spin dash. You're still almost never engaging with the level design.) Now when I say "vertical," I don't necessarily mean make it like Chaotix, because that game's level design is hot garbage, even if it was somewhat necessary. No, remember in Sonic 3, when you got a frickload of momentum and flew through the air for a long time? You thought you were skipping a huge chunk of the stage like in Sonic 1 or 2, only to realize "Oh hey, there's another route here."

tl;dr: You can't fly over the entire stage with momentum, if you don't have level design that allows for it in the first place.

Contrary to belief, I think Sonic's use of enemies in the better parts of the series are genius. Having them be obstacles but with enough skill in both 2D and 3D, you can use them to get back to higher routes of a level. Penny has none of that, it's purely trying to break a level with an intricate moveset. Which is fine but it needs more than just geometric shapes, AND Penny looks lame.

All the footage I've seen essentially amounts to the player racking up speed by going down a slope that leads to a quarter pipe where they jump off and get huge air. They then proceed to fly over the rest of the level doing a bunch of air stall tricks and maintain their momentum until they reach the next slope section and do it all over again. Any interactive stage elements get ignored after your first playthrough, or even as soon as you discover the entire game is littered with these slopes into quarter pipe sections and you can abuse them. Now you can make the claim that I should stop being a homosexual and playing like a speed runner and just have fun, but then the game actively discourages you from taking your time because then the penguins come after you. Which is bizarre because they also put a bunch or NPCs they clearly want you to interact with that you can't interact with because you're being chased by penguins.
The air trick spam and skipping all the stuff doesn't really look like fun to me, and I imagine it didn't look fun to other people either. The yoyo centered gimmick and having it being controlled via a right stick only method was a cool idea, but then they did nothing actually cool with it in terms of enemy encounters, creative boss fights, or environmental or gimmick interactions. It's no Ape Escape in terms of creativity.

      >creative boss fights
The game seemed like it only added boss fights because it was expected to add boss fights rather than because they actually wanted to. There being no footage of any boss fights until literally after the game released was a bad sign in retrospect.

All bosses should've played out similar to the penguinball chase from the beginning, with Penny escaping while the boss has an accident at the end.

Not sure why you want to see all the bosses piss themselves but okay.

Graphical fidelity doesn't matter in games to me. But visual design sure as hell does, and pennys looks like ass.

It's ugly but honestly game's just kind of mid. It plays well but the levels are just boring. No real platforming challenge of Mario or stlye/speed of sonic, it's an awkward middle of the road which is disappointing

she just doesnt frick human men. i know its a meme but.... theres truth to it. the popularity of a game can bedivined proportionally to the amount of pornographic fanart that is derived from it. Consider something like Klona. If klona was a girl, her game would have been much more popular because the e-girlfurry artists would have memed it into mainstreamness. But unfortunately, klona is a boy and gay pedophileshotacons are both a niche minority and poor as frick.

I know that this is a thread about the faults of the game, but as someone who has a bit of insider knowledge, atm the company is fighting with Private Division to ensure that they don't get their studio gutted because they want the next game to be "scaled down".
Yes, that's right. Private Division wants Evening Star to be EVEN SMALLER and give them a lower budget than they already do.

The discord defense force didn't do any favors for the game by being passive-aggressive when people were trying to learn the game or critiqued the character design. I would like to give it a try but that point above soured me on the game. Better luck next time, Mania team.

Almost no interviews, virtually no advertising, random shadow drop launch in a busy week right before Splatoon 3 DLC, no Nextfest demo even though Nextfest took place a week before launch.

Honestly its such an amazing fumble of guaranteed success.

Eh, if it was a good game people would talk about it instead of focusing exclusively on how ugly the protagonist is
Everyone talks about how good Hi-Fi Rush was and it had the same issue.

I told you Ganker, I warned you.
The moment the dev said right stick handles yoyo and not the camera, in a frikking 3d platformer, I told you it was shit.
This was like a full month before release. Yet you mocked me.

"Oh, Whitehead can do no wrong"

Dumbass kept badmouthing Sega because of Denuvo and that the launch was a buggy mess and that they barely worked on Sonic Origins. Dude's pretentious as frick and barely understands Sonic games, it's all loops for him

People eternally seething at the Sonic Mania devs for dumb shit is really funny. You can always spot them in a discussion; they stumble over weird non-explanations of legitimate criticisms made by people who actually care about video games.

I don't like the game but the bad rap it gets around here is awful. This thread has 150+ replies and the vast majority of them are people saying the exact same fricking thing. There's only a handful of people talking about the actual game or why they hate the gameplay.
Yeah, the game is ugly, but do these clowns really think they have any more insight to add than the 149 people before them?

        >There's only a handful of people talking about the actual game or why they hate the gameplay.
That's because there's nothing to say about it. The camera's annoying, the movement is tedious, there's no finesse to any of the controls, the level design is fricking boring, there are no cool TECHNOLOGY systems and the story is trash.

The frick is there to talk about besides the ugly goblin MC?

It's funny how you say that as if it wasn't just a few straggler anons (myself included) who noticed the game was being received poorly by filtered morons.
None of your complaints about Penny's Big Breakaway are valid because you're simply bad at the game. There is no nuance, get good.
Imagine crying about how a platformer character is brown or has "poor" level design because you can barely understand the piss-easy momentum system.

The feeling I got watching gameplay is that it's a game people feel compelled to say they're having fun with (like the movement objectively looks and feels cool), but it's not something you'd actually feel like going back to play. The actions you take playing the stages seem to be really superfluous and arbitrary, and I think people prefer more straightforward platforming.

Most of the people I noticed defending this game are really defensive about the devs.

Looks bad. Visuals aren't everything, don't judge a book by its cover and all that, but in a crowded storefront where people are combing through an endless deluge of indies (many being platformers), many people are going to stop on your cover, look at an ugly design, and keep scrolling.

      >don't judge a book by its cover

Consider that you should always judge a book by its cover, because its appearance reflects the merit of its contents.

it really does just constantly feed back to 'the game is ugly.' it's impressively ugly. it's simply hard to look at and enjoy looking at while playing. i really wanted to like the game but it's just fricking ugly and my first exposure to it was on switch at launch in 30 fps. ghastly stuff. it was just too much for me, and i say that as someone who likes shitty looking things in the vein of bubsy 3d, cyberdillo, revenge of the sunfish, etc.

also i hate to be that guy but it is also ugly in a way that feels particularly and astringently of-this-era. maybe some people really into that one era of sega get something out of it i guess
