Why did Sega Genesis have a reputation of being a more edgy platform?

Why did Sega Genesis have a reputation of being a more edgy platform? Was it just because of Mortal Kombat 1 having blood in it? I can only think of Splatterhouse when it comes to somewhat gruesome games.

Modern sensibilities tend to try and judge that sort of overall alignment by extremes, while in reality those tend to be offshoots that aren't really that meaningful as a whole.

I agree a BIG factor was marketing simply repackaging the same content as more exxxxxtrrrreeeemmme, but though there wasn't a particularly shocking difference with Nintendo in terms of average or potential content, it's a fact that Nintendo made a point of mandating tighter standards and practices that translated in less likely courting of "older" audiences.

Because kids who had them were pissed off little dorks that would attack you if you said you had the superior SNES.

It just was marketed that way, it was the techy looking black console with sexy angular controllers, not the kiddie colored toy, it had the smirking cool hedgehog, not the dumb wholesome plumber. It really was mostly marketing at the end of the day there wasn't a huge difference in terms of games.....the main thing is that it appealed more to like "kewl" normies and older people cause it had more sports games

Now Playstation, that was truly the first edgy console, and the difference between it and N64 was night and day in terms of having games for teens/adults more than children

Playstation 1 definitely had some crazy stuff, but that's too obvious when comparing it to N64, I'm more interested in how Genesis was percepted because I'm a 2nd worlder, and we didn't have any of the marketing it seems outside of a few TV shows.

    >Snatcher
It was just the more adult console in general OP. No way Nintendo would ever allow something like this

      >blood in Mortal Kombat
The SNES had plenty of games with blood. In fact, the first Mortal Kombat is the only SNES game I can remember where blood was removed.
Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, Killer Instinct, Doom and other games all had blood on the SNES.

Thanks to the ESRB being created.

Still, Nintendo wasn't against approving these games.

Just because you only know the one famous time it was removed doesn't mean it didn't constantly happen. There's probably something like 75-100 games where blood was removed. Blackthorne, Art of fighting, super castlevania IV(removed from both the title screen and recolored green multiple times in game)

Because zoomies like you tend to simplify shit they don't understand into labels like "edgy".
Genesis is black, was popular with the jocks, and had a few more bloody games than the SNES. The differences in focus between the two consoles was marginal at best, and yes I'm talking about marketing too. It was mostly the same shit-flinging between Sega & Nintendo, alongside telling the viewer how EXTREME their new processor was and how their mainline kiddie platformer is the next big thing.
