Not initially. Back when it first came out it was relentlessly mocked for being edgy. Some even called it "Edgelord Within". It's beloved today, but that can probably be attributed to nostalgia. Sands of Time is considered the classic in the trilogy, not Warrior Within.

The worst part is that detractors only complained about dumb shit. Like combo names, Shahdee being half naked or how the tone was edgy and different from SOT. I guess that's what happens when the actual gameplay is fricking perfect, you zero in on something irrelevant.

shahdee was the equivalent of a big budget evony ad, barely in the game and only there to sell copies
different from sot is an entirely valid criticism for a sequel, which is mainly where the edgy = bad comments come from
acting like it's the epitome of gameplay when it released at the same time as ninja gaiden, dmc, gow, etc is just absurd
I'm good with people saying they prefer ww over sot, but acting like a nonce you can frick right off

Actually, I think Ubisoft just managed to do what so many other garbage publishers TRY to do: dumped the franchise's original audience and got a new one. People who loved The Sands of Time hated Warrior Within. People who had no interest in The Sands of Time because it looked "gay" suddenly thought the series was awesome when they noticed Warrior Within had cleavage and cuss words.

Oh, that may have been exclusive to the PS2 version. I played the PC version and the only thing out of the ordinary was the complete lack of OST and voices, and that was because it was a common thing among pirated copies for some reason at the time.

yeah, bandwidth and disc space were a precious commodity at the time, some people were still sitting on 56K modems. so game "rips" circulated a lot more than full disc dumps, where they had removed as much as they could to lower the file size while still keeping the game playable.

Wrong. Warrior within was easily the best pop. No it didnt, what killed PoP was a mix of Ass Creed becoming popular while doing the same gameplay but better, and the remake being dogshit.

also Warrior Within is not fun, it has frickloads of backtracking, sure its cool and the Dahaka chase sections are fun. but after the "ow the edge" treatment, it becomes pretty stale.

Two Thrones dialed it back a bit and became more like the first one, even going as far as bringing back the vizier and Farah. the Dark prince was a fun alter ego, both in personality and combat. but he should've been fleshed out more, he just leaves without any fanfare near the end of the game, no boss fight or anything as far as i remember. A perfect mix of the first and second game. which only makes sense for the third sequel.

          >what killed PoP was a mix of Ass Creed becoming popular while doing the same gameplay but better
No, Ubisoft ran out of ideas and what was supposed to be PoP Assassins they turned into a new IP. There is no timeline where these two games coexist because they switched focus almost immediatly.

good example by anon, jak 2 was COMPLETELY inferior to 2 in artstyle, storytelling, just ... RELAXEDNESS and wymsical nature.

Althoug h2 is technically superior, it felt like they slapped some GTA onto jack... it wasn't a bad game, but the original is VASTLY superior because it is what it is. And 2 tries to be something else and it is not entirely succesful to, not quite able to capture this.

I remember I was so excited I couldn't sleep that night and I replayed the game after watching shitty 140p videos on YouTube that explained how to find the water sword. Warrior Within was such a fricking gem. Truly the peak of u*isoft.

Primal was when the goth/emo/rock girls were a thing (now they are told to be non binary or some shit)
It was dark and beautiful at the same time

That's because the standard for the girls who want to be special was to go goth emo whatever and that implied

It's a... complex question. Like, on paper it's one of the best, with the strongest story and atmosphere and some interesting mechanics, but in reality the game just falls apart, because it's flat out unfinished. And I mean, KotOR 2 levels of unfinished.

The tone of the story and atmosphere wasn't edgy at all. It wanted to be darker but it was really atmospheric and kind of melancholic. I remember when I played it for the first time when I was 14 and I ended up incredibly liking it despite all the flaws because the aesthetic, mood, and core ideas kept drawing me in. It's incredibly sad how much of it was rushed and released incomplete. When you search "Angel Of Darkness" on youtube you will find hundreds of videos about how much content was cut from the game including entire levels, frick ton of important story cutscenes, Kurtis being a completely different character gameplay-wise with paranormal abilities, almost finished bosses, enemies, weapons, gameplay sections, mechanics, areas, characters, songs, etc, etc. Angel Of Darkness would have been incredible if they gave them at least one more year of development time.

Yeah, I... respect AoD for what it was trying to do, and similalry to Dragon Age 2, you can feel there is a really good game beneath this whole nonsense trying to get out, but AoD is just not fun to play, even with all that goodwill. The mechanics are either buggy, broken or unfinished and at some point you realize you are playing it despite the gameplay being awful.

I have a lot of nostalgia for primal, really soulfull game. Fairy tale like isn't really what I called it, main girl is the gf of a rocker guy, saidguy get kidnapped by a big monsters and she get butchered
She wakes up in a hospital, as a ghost in front of her corpse, and a gargoyle guy guides her to a paralel world where her bf might be. You then go through 4 differents realms, and take on the form of the demon living there.
Combat system was really clunky, not really responsive. Cool soundtrack, amazing dynamics between protag and the gargoyle. The disc also had a lot of making off, having that on disc was really cool, not much different than what we now found online but it's just not the same

there's edge, and god of war is just PURE METAL. The whole game is so INCREDIBLY over the top, with the first one being basically the funniest with kratos literally being a sadist, revelling in killing innocentpeople and having sex, spartha style hahaha.

The whole game is just one big laugh a thon of stupid and the OVER THE TOP epic tracks just make it all the more pleasing. I think the series climaxed in the opening of GOW2 where the colossus fight is just so crazy and insane, even the greec chorus in the background is singing about the fight, it's just one big adrenalin fuelled crazy fight, love it! I really want to replay GOW 2 on pc with perfect resolution one day. I remember it was pretty damn hard on hardest difficulty.

I always wonder what old God of War fans think of the new ones. They basically shit on the style the game was, for better or for worse. I imagine most fans can appreciate callbacks and the kratos as a character, but its hard to even classify these new games as part of the same series even.

I played the original six games 3-5 times over each before Dad of War came out. You're right that they're basically completely different flavors of game with not only different goals but goals that are fundamentally at cross purposes. There are many ways in which the modern titles are actually held back by the mechanical precedent and story beats of the previous games, which makes the ways in which they have managed to handle Kratos well bittersweet rather than satisfying. The action RPG bloat of crafting, open world quest design, and modern Sony fetishization of close-camera dialogue occurring during gameplay actively spits in the simple and graceful combat of the original trilogy, and yet the legacy of the blades of chaos and the ways in which Kratos moves restrict what they want to do with an over-the-shoulder camera and combat based heavily on your companion.

My feelings for them are complicated. They are good games, but they are not perfect games. I am not angry about their imperfections, but disagree with many fundamental decisions made and the priorities implicit behind those decisions. I nevertheless played and enjoyed them, I just enjoy the original trilogy more.

Do you enjoy the PSP games and Ascension?

              Anonymous

Speaking with the caveat that I played the portable games on PS3, I found them broadly to be unremarkable but fine. Chains of Olympus is short and pretty unmemorable, but Ghost of Sparta is honestly pretty decent. Ascension looks positively stunning, especially for a PS3 game, but they were definitely running low on ideas at that point so a lot of the focus is on cool setpieces and graphical marvels that aren't great to play but look nice. Phenomenal sense of scale if nothing else, which is honestly I think the single biggest thing the Dad of War games have lost with their obsession with close-in camera shots and a single pan. In a series whose entire ethos was based around the titanic scale of the myths with static cameras often zooming out until Kratos was an all but invisible speck on the screen, none of that bombastic weight or impact is utilized even when they're clearly trying to evoke it. Ragnarok itself feels more like a particularly hairy firefight in Uncharted rather than even something on the scale of a fight with a single demigod in 2 or 3.

Whether a game is "bad" is purely a matter of opinion, and thus, yes, his distaste for the game does make it bad, in the only way that badness can be measured, i.e., subjectively.

                >The camera really sucks dick, all the enemies are damage sponges
Both can apply to the old games equally. Arty environmental cameras are nice for screenshots but are dogshit for combat when you have to focus on a tiny fraction of it for the actual gameplay. And enemies on higher difficulties (you DO play on higher difficulties right?) are spongey.
The RPG elements are absolute dogshit though, I don't think anyone disagrees with that.

I literally just gave a synopsis of why I think they're bad, which you then argued ackshually they aren't bad because the old games did it too sometimes.
                >Arty environmental cameras
You know what the old games DIDN'T need? A fricking onscreen compass to tell you when an enemy is behind you because the camera is shoved so far up Kratos's ass that he takes up half the screen. You literally cannot defend that. It's bad design.
The damage sponge argument is true for the old games but nobody's going to care when you complain the game's combat is tedious when you're playing on Nightmare Anal Rampage difficulty. Meanwhile in regular GoW 2018 it takes way too long to dispatch a single enemy. This on top of performance reasons is also why there are only ever 3-4 on the screen at a time, another reason why the game feels flaccid and lame.
And again, the moviegame shit. The writing is so fricking limpwristed and the millennial reddit dwarves make me cringe. It's just not a good game.

    SoT - 2.4 million

The sequel technically sold worse, but sold enough to continue the series. What's funny is how this was the beginning of the brown and bloom era, with all of the life and color sucked of the series and the Prince changed into a completely different character. But people cheered on those changes, because frick consistency, am I right?

        >TT got all the colour back but it was an inferior game
TT missed the point of SoT. Farah was made into a worse character and in an attempt to distance itself from WW it severed, any interesting plot point or character from it was cut. The Dark Prince himself, while entertaining, is wasted potential and nothing at all to what WW showed of him. The biggest problem is that SoT was originally meant to be a standalone game. The story was done and over. But since it made money, Ubisoft wanted more. This resulted in Warrior Within being made, but Ubisoft expressed how they wanted a broader audience, which eventually alienated John Mechner and resulted in him leaving Ubisoft for good.

When I first heard about this mechanic I thought it was going to be like a Sands of Time version of Devil Trigger. I wanted Two Thrones to be a really fun action game. Some of the things it did were amazing, but I feel like there were too many setpieces for how short it felt.

I spend weeks, WEEKS, trying to unlock that fricking Water Sword, only so I can see the sex scene between the Prince and Kaileena. I was still disappointed.
I felt the same in TR 3 where I grinded for all the secret and all I got was a crappy cut level instead of naked Lara.

the girl on the stand probably looks WAYYYYY better as the girl on the catwalk is just really fat as you can tell from her blobby ass.

In the rest of the world, thing girls are considered attractive. In the US and africa, fat chicks are OK.

                Anonymous

The male gaze is a meme. Hot girls LOVE being watched. Its like complaining "omg women stares at me too much!"

Only trannies and ugly women say male gaze is a crime (notice how suddenly lesbian gaze doesnt exist) and even the trannies who can afford to operate themselves the very first thing they do is upload pics of their fake breasts and tons of make up
                They obviously hate competition

                Anonymous

Its only a meme inso much that the male gaze is considered negative while the female gaze is considered to be something to aspire to, but thats just typical modern culture trying to hate and get rid of anything masculine. Theres nothing wrong as a male wanting to see bountiful women.

That game was actually good, and it's hurt by being compared to other PoP. The 1v1 fights are one of the best ones the series has to offer, the magic is fricking SPECTACULAR as magic should be, and the gameplay is ridiculously fun. Flowing from one point to another in this game is some next level fun.

They kinda messed up with the open structure, because from what I recall 3 of the 4 magics don't require anything but the basic parkour to get, so there is no pacing to getting more power. This could use a bit more structure, but it's still a good entry to the series, much better that Forgotten Sands.

The ugly culture is just destructive. You see ugly girls embracing the nb culture instead of just improving themselves
I remember this girl who used to be fat in her 13s, glasses brackets and everything, she used to feel like shit
Went to an Endocrinologist and gave her some pills and special diet, lost TONS og weight, those pills also altered her hormones so she got lucky and her huges became big, her tooth were fixed, and she started using new clothes, use contatcs lenses, new haircuts, experimentimg witj make up.....and woala, she became a gorgeous woman

You would be surprised how much the nb cult hurts insecure girls who just want to be special the easiest way because stacies make them feel bad, instead of aspiring to become stacies themselves

And troons obviously want women to be ugly since they obviously cant ever compete against them, they will always be a monstuosity

"Some say that Shahdee was created in the Empress' own image. Like everything else on the island, she exists to serve the Empress of Time. But, unlike the rest of the Sand Creatures, she enjoys a small degree of autonomy, functioning as the Empress' second in command. Nevertheless, the Empress is not the kindest of masters, and Shahdee has suffered years of terrible abuse at her hands. Over time, she has come to hate her maker, secretly devising ways to either escape the island or kill the Empress. She's just waiting for the right opportunity to present itself."

it has some unique mechanics never seen in other pop games (e.g. you have the ability to put on a thing you can hang onto on any part of the wall that you want), its level design is arguably among the best in the series
there's also some very neat bonus content e.g. a short platforming segment done in the style of the first two pop games
don't miss out on the game

I really don't understand what is so hard about making a Prince of Persia or why they go to such lengths instead of sticking to a tested formula. This approach worked for so many of Ubisoft games like Far Cry and Assassins Creed who had little variation in gameplay over the years and yet they spawned dozen of them, while with PoP they seem to go crazy every entry in the franchise instead of treating it the same.

Despite obviously being a product of its time, Warrior Within was ridiculously kino. I have a tremendous respect for sequels that are willing to go for a different style and tone for the sequels yet make it work like T2, Aliens, RE4 etc; it keeps things interesting and fresh. Sands of Time was incredible but I'm glad they didn't try to chase that dragon again. This was the textbook grittier, darker middle chapter but the Prince being always chased by the ever oppressive Dahaka justified the shift in tone for me. There's some "ow the edge" 2000's to it all but I'd say it works 95% of the time.

Two Thrones was also good, but it just didn't leave much of an impact like Sands and Warrior did; both those games felt like they had their own distinct personalities, while TT felt kind of like a compromise.

Can't dare to imagine them remaking WW

Pushing for the literal diversity team, mostly Indian girls even, sent out this supposed remake to development hell, remember that the latest news on this project is that Ubisoft restructured the developers team and has delayed the game to an indefinite date.

That was before the most recent news that Ubisoft as a whole is facing major downturns, who knows if this remake won’t be actually cancelled any day now.

In the Sands of Time the Prince of Persia is set within India and Arabia. Additionally, you should know that people will conflate Middle-Eastern aesthetic and designs with Arabian culture, especially when they use Arabian themes since the first DOS game.

    >Dahaka kills either the prince or the sand wraith and lets the other one go

I know it's a time travel story so confusing logic is expected but still.

There are either 2 or 3 different Dahaka's on the Island of Time during the game. Because there are ultimately 3 princes.

I think in that ending, the Prince created an infinite loop where the Dhaka kills one version of him forever.

      Pretty fricked up

I think its more about fate, then time travel.
Everythings pre-destined; except when you use the sands of time to change your fate.

If you dont kill kaleena, someone else would. Since the sands of time existed in the future, the dahaka can be sure that it's pre-destined and he doesnt need to worry about it.

But it kind of implies, that the dahaka has nothing else to do then kill an infinte number of princes over and over again.

Its doesnt make that much sense...
But it was GRIMDARK and COOL.

the sands of time is a timeless masterpiece almost on par with disney like magic. The sequels are utterly forgettable and uninteresting both visually, storywise, the whole look and feel is completely inferior and feels like they went from superior storytelling with a wymsical tale which is narratively CORRECT, and turned full LINKING PARK EMOOO

I never cared for any of the combat mecahncis because games like that neverh ave any meaningful combat to begin with.

It's like kingdoms of amalure, its' fun, visually pleasing, ti's FINE.

Shut up you underaged Black person. The first game was fricking lame, short, tedious, and boring as frick. Warrior Within had way better gameplay, puzzles, exploration, level design, enemies, combat system, incredible music, way more interesting art style that fitted a darker aesthetic, more mature story that was about Prince facing the consequences of his actions instead of being a fantasy Disney romcom, and amazing atmosphere.

It was such a bizarre shift for the franchise.
It's not just the edgier tone, it's also the fact that it feels like a complete non-sequitur in every regard. It's like it starts in medias res, except certain things are simply never explained.
