PVP was broken as frick full of janky meta shit like toggle scape and chain backstabs but I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't pure SOUL, Look at ER for example watered down and sanded till everything that made pvp special was gone, no covenants, fightclubs, pvp hotspots, etc.

                Anonymous

PvP was only fun in the Souls games when the games let you mess around with all the fun stuff you could do. Once they tried actually balancing it, it wasn't fun anymore because there's simply not enough to the combat mechanics to make for interesting PvP. Bloodborne and DaS3's PvP is genuinely pretty bad.

                >DaS3's PvP is genuinely pretty bad.
Even tho they patched fun shit like acid surge to oblivion and poison, toxic are worthless, the gameplay loop, covenants and invasions remains intact, pvp hotspots and fight clubs are still a thing, it is my most played souls game for that reason alone and I think most agree with that sentiment.

Like I said, there's just simply not enough to the games combat to make for combat against other humans fun from a competitive stand point. But messing around with all the fun spells and using cheese tactics made PvP in DeS, DaS, and DaS2 a lot of fun.

            Lol. Lmao, even.

All the dragon fights range from great to good, they are at worst slightly less varied Midir copypaste
Fire Giant is good unless you are the moron who spammed rolls and got him rolling all over the place back and forth as well
Elden Beast is great and got heat for not being a shitty QTE and instead having phases of running and dodging spells. Also because morons would chase him when he dived for the rings attack or other ranged attacks even though it teleports back in melee range itself

              Anonymous

As far as dragon fights go, you have all the generic reskins of Agheel, Lichdragon Fortissax which is IMO the worst boss fight in the whole game, and Placidusax which is at least original in some way, but too reliant on AoEs and teleporting and not as cool as Midir.
Fire Giant is a trainwreck, the reason large bosses don't work in these games is because the camera can't handle it. Additionally being on horseback is too risky and being on foot is painfully slow when he rolls away after a single R1.
I don't dislike Elden Beast as much as most, I think Radagon is the worse half of that boss. Besides elden stars being unavoidable damage unless you use BHS or stagger him out of it, there's nothing really wrong with EB.
Rykard was my favourite "large" boss in ER but even that fight has issues. The whole game was a big step back from DS3 and Sekiro is terms of boss design.

I meant Sifu was also a stepping stone to better combat systems. It raised the bar on the AssCreed/BamHam/Sleeping Dogs/ShadowOfMorWar/Witcher 3/etc. free flow combat system we've been playing over and over again for 15 years by incorporating Sifu's parry and posture systems but also adding the high-low dodge mechanic as its own spin. Its not perfect, but hopefully game devs were taking notice and we get to see something that elevates 1vX combat gameplay further.

No, except that its martial arts themed and has an unlockable movelist. Imagine AssCreed combat except enemies can also counter you after a few attacks, with Sekiro's posture and parry systems, and bosses that demand extremely good reaction times even after you memorize their moveset. Also one of the absolute best jumps in difficulty from Normal to Hard I've ever seen in like 20 years of playing vidya. Its genuinely a God tier single player experience if you like any kind of beat em up or DMC style game.

Martial arts fantasy twisted modern urban setting. Every major power player in town comes from borderline magical kung-fu dojos who killed your master in your youth and stole the secret at the center of his style which they use to rule the city with a dystopian iron fist at all levels of society from the slums to the art houses to the mega corporations, but you manage to save a shred of it and, combined with your dojo's seemingly forgotten style and 12 years of brooding, you're gonna get revenge for your adoptive father or die (over and over) trying.

Feudal Japan is classic and has loads of broad appeal. Who doesn't love samurai and ninjas and katanas and all that good stuff? And it more than makes up for any deficiencies in that broad appeal as compared to medieval European fantasy simply by virtue of not having been run into the ground yet. I'm the sort of autist that cares enough about European fantasy to have strong opinions on what fairies and goblins should be like and even I think it's been done to death at this point.

Normalhomosexuals will eat up literally any shit if you slap it with enough Skinner Box RPG elements

Conversely they are allergic to any game that doesn't constantly reward you with a meaningless treadmill of loot and levels. Sekiro has a very mild case of this but to a much more limited degree than most other modern games, including other From games.

I'm a purist when it comes to games and prefer it much more to improve through skill instead of levels and stats, but a small amount of progression and unlocks is a great way to slowly introduce more mechanics instead of dumping everything on the player from the get go.

After communing with my inner normie I have come to the conclusion that it must be the lack of multiplayer. Playing Sekiro felt lonely compared to the Souls games where there are player ghosts, blood stains, messages, co-op and invasions.
That social feeling that you aren't alone in this hell is vital to retaining the interest of any normie that tries to push themselves through a difficult game like this.

I think people always read too far into specific mechanics when they analyze sales, it was an off release not attached to the souls series, feudal japan has less mass appeal than medieval fantasy, it didn't have george rr martin attached, and elden ring was farther a long in the continuing media snowball/consolidation.

The player pumps twice right at the start but there's no button prompt. It also doesn't count every swing. All the DDR style commands are showing are hits and deflects that landed, which you could do for any action game. Do you actually think this is clever or that anyone who actually watches it wouldn't immediately know it was bullshit?

        Anonymous

Try doing the two hits into deflect for Genichiro/Isshin (R1 R1 L1), it's my default combo for those two, feels great when they connect

Get the firecracker and just block, gyoubu doesn't deal enough posture damage to have to worry about parry
Basically just throw firecracker every 15s or so get a few hits in then retreat and block, hook him when the mark appears. Learn his moveset so you know where to get your hits in without getting smacked

      >Muh blocking
Okay with that out of the way. Sekiro just came out between two games that had good old Japanese settings. Not to say that in terms of gameplay is a departure to what most of their fanbase are used to not to say some weird design decisions such as basically being locked to a level until you are done with it. I mean DeS was kind of like that but not really. Sekiro is on the same park as Bloodborne taking something from souls game and building on top of it. It will alienate a huge chuck of their following one way or another.

If we are going by their announcements not long ago it's going to be a new Armored Core game. So like
      >End of 2022, Elden Ring DLC
      >Mid to late 2023 new Armored Core
There is also the rumor Miyazaki is working with Sony again hence why Elden Ring took the co director method at some point during development.

as beautiful as this game is. as fricking amazing as it sounds when you clash swords.

its just simply a stupid fricking game. I downloaded a cheat program (free) because it wouldve taken astronomical hours just to reach any kind of real progress in the game. just for the conclusion to be such a fricking waste of time.

lots of cool shit in this game. very beautiful, good sound track, and the game-sounds are so good. I love the way combat sounds, swords clinging and clashing is extremely satisfying.

But it has mega manufactured difficulty. To a degree that is just fricking beyond stupid.
theres so much i love about this game. But it isnt justified by the manufactured difficulty. It has some legitimately difficult aspects. But 90% of it is manufactured bullshit making it a complete waste of time

you probably cant understand the deep underlying game mechanics, which is why you probably love it. You can only see the surface of sekiro, therefore you dont fully understand it.

    Because -
it has little to no cheese strats, the ones available require player interaction to discover and use.
Similarly the actual variety and options in the combat require player interaction and common sense to notice and make use of, telling someone they're using something different even when it's functionally identical matters far more to these people than actually learning and using different tools that are provided even when they're similar to the aforementioned options.
And to build on that it required people to develop mildly different skills and adapt which is verboten and grounds for blaming the game and calling it bad design no matter where it shows up because the person playing can never go wrong and is always entitled to success in a medium designed fundamentally around challenge big and small.

Shortly after BBs peak in popularity, one third of people haven't even killed Gascoigne, the first mandatory boss.

DS2 I can understand because I dropped that game so fast, about BB I dont really have an opinion because I played it for like 20mins in the army and beat the guy in the graveyard in 2 tries and I think thats father gascoigne

        Anonymous

a bosses winrate against players is moronic to measure.

if you die twice to the boss, and win 3rd try it's not like you can make up the difference in the W/L ratio, you can only win once. And as the case for many DS bosses even if you're playing carefully and well and have a strong build you may frick up or get caught out or mistime a roll on your first few attempts.

No walk through the test chamber of horror in the temple

No climb up the mountain for a fight with a Tengu
    No Hell area
    No Centipede Pit boss fight
No interaction with the Shogunate forces beyond a bonus sub boss
No Tomoe secret boss in Heaven
Limited amount of secret areas with world building hidden lore
    Mibu village lacked sub missions
Never let you team to with the guy following the girl's song for a fight either
    No Kingfisher ghost fight
Caves just exist as a travel area instead of having their own hidden boss and story

And then throw in how gimmicky and grindy the leveling system was and how pre-patch you either use ichimonji or high monk or you've wasted your skill slot.

But Sekiro "parry" is stupidly easy

        Anonymous

Meh, certainly not for me. I admit I got filtered. Have beaten every other Soulsborne game without ever utilizing the parry system (except for Bloodborne’s gun parry which I find even easier than Sekiro’s).

I have up after about 25 hours in Sekiro tbh. Was only able to beat one proper boss (the Drunkard guy) and failed to even beat Enshin the miniboss after about 100 attempts. I’ll give the game another try soon but I was out after that.

man you suck ass. that drunkard guy is a miniboss. i just started playing and dont like the game and think its garbage and i have 5 hours and i am following the fextralife gameprogress guide and i just beat the lone shadow longswordman. the graphics are really bad on pc at 1440p. it looks reallly jaggy and theres a lot of weird graphical glitches, i have to play it on low settings even though i have a 3007 so its not as noticeable

How did Ubisoft make a better combat system than Sekiro 3 years prior Sekiro?

  70. 2 years ago

    Two reasons:
    1. No character creator.
    2. No multiplayer.
These alone filter out most normals.

      Anonymous

But most normie games don't have character creation why is it suddenly a big deal

Because nowadays everything is about individualism and especially soulless americans feel the need to self insert their moronic asses into everything to get a sense of identity.

        Anonymous

Depends on the genre. Sometimes some random indie game becomes popular among normals, those usually don't have character creation, just like online "hero" games (Overwatch, ASShomosexualS etc.).
But even though The Witcher 3, for example, was very popular, normals were still complaining about no character creator, classes and so on.

it's not an RPG, it's an action game, so you can't cheese the game by overlevelling by maxxing stats, you actually have to get good at the combat system. The only thing you could do is unlock all the moves and healing shit, yet even then you need to master the combat.

It still shifted several million copies, pretty good for a brand-new franchise from a relatively small Japanese middleware developer. That said it clearly filtered Souls players who relied on overpowered builds and cheesing strategies to beat those games. Sekiro is a much more pure test of skill and mastery of systems, which is probably why the more insufferable Soulsgays like to bleat about it not having build variety. Firsthand encounters with zoomers who tried this game typically tell a story of them getting filtered by the opening area and refunding the game in favour of some casual open-world game.

Having to concentrate in every single encounter/fight until you have it memorised just made exploring a fricking pain. Yet it had the same massive From style levels with multiple paths. For me the Sould style opaque structure did not mesh well with an action game with a high pace. Most of the time I had no idea where I was going or why because there was no map to tell where the frick I was in comparison to everywhere else. Then it teleported me to Monkey Mansion, which was fun but I still had no idea what the frick was going on.

      Anonymous

Spoken like someone who never played it. Probably a Souls troony too. And literally Elden Ring/Dark Souls is just "push the roll button at the right time and then spam attack". The difference is that Sekiro makes you watch out for unblockable attacks that need to be evaded, jumped over or mikiri countered. Souls games are quite literally one dimensional compared to Sekiro because all you do in Souls games is roll around on the ground to dodge everything. It looks stupid, the hit detection is terrible, you just phase through everything and it doesn't feel satisfying to do. The Sekiro parry is the polar opposite.

        Anonymous

Elden Ring has several viable ways to deal with enemies, many are better than dodging, many are better for certain enemies
Sekiro having 10% of attacks that need to be jumped over or dodged doesn't make it any less 1 dimensional and boring

          Anonymous

Rolling is the optimal way to defend against attacks in Elden Ring. You can parry but the parry is broken and unreliable as always. You can use the various defensive Ashes but they all consume mana to use (the equivalent of certain ninja prosthetics in Sekiro like the firecrackers and umbrella that I neglected to mention for this very reason). Much like the Souls games and Bloodborne, it boils to to tapping one button over and over. What's even sadder is a lot of the bosses are effectively Sekiro bosses in terms of their movesets but when they unless a combo on you the optimal way of dealing with it is just running away. In Sekiro you can get up in their face and parry every blow.

I'll never get over how utterly delusional Souls fanboys are when it comes to Sekiro. The way you can say "hurr durr all you do is parry". Literally all you do is roll around on the ground in Dark Souls/Elden Ring. There's no other level to the gameplay.

Shitter opinion, positioning, parrying, blocking, countering, rolling, jumping are all viable and useful with each its benefits and risks

There was an actual moveset that went beyond rolling or throwing fireballs

It really isn't, you have 3 options in total which is ass

              Anonymous

Nah not really. The jumping is especially pathetic because there's pretty much no attacks where it's optimal to use it, and sometimes you you think you can use it to jump over something but you can't. Parrying has the same issues with not know what bosses you can use it on and just like the rest of the game the animations are so out of whack with the hitboxes that it's entirely unreliable and just safer to do almost anything else. Guard counters are suboptimal just like the basic block is too, it's safer not to do it at all most of the time. Oh and of course all of this shit is tied to the crappy broken stamina system which exists as a band aid for bad AI, much like the enemy input reading.

Yeah and it doesn't matter which direction you roll in because you phase through the attacks like a ghost either way. You can dodge/run in Sekiro too if you want to reposition. The fact remains that Souls shit just wants you to roll through everything while Sekiro demands that you parry, jump, mikiri, dodge and lightning counter when necessary. You're right that the dodge roll in Souls games isn't comparable to the parry in Sekiro though because the parry can actually be used aggressively, it damages the enemies.
