VR's problem is software and not at all hardware like everyone who hasn't tried it thinks. Essentially until AI is good enough to run in real time on everyone's PCs and make new things happen when a user tries something new, good VR, especially "Full Dive" is impossible. Forget about the hardware.
Full dive with all senses is a pipedream but BCI isn't. Controlling your avatar with mental impulses at least would be a big step up even if you still need a screen on your face.

When the lockdowns started, I bought my headset to watch movies in a virtual theater. In that regard, it was 10/10. The games are just a side benefit, but most of them feel like tech demos. Of the tech demos, I had some fun with Jet Island, Until You Fall, B&S, and Walkabout Mini Golf (especially with out-of-state real life friends).
But the king of ludo is Skyrim VR. That was the one thing I least expected from it. Modded Skyrim VR is amazing. Mods clean up the visuals, giving you the best VR immersive experience. Mods clean up the VR interface and physics, making it the best game to play. The actual transformation from being VR also changes the game in the best of ways, making magic builds feel amazing with two directional hands, while archery starts to take skill, and unarmed can be done like boxing. On top of all this, Skyrim has the crowning benefit of being an actual complete game. It isn't just another tech demo. I seriously can't recommend this game enough to anyone that already has a headset. The single downside is that it's Skyrim. You've already played it for 500 to 1,000 hours and nothing will be truly new.

It's only good for simulation and horror games. Nothing else really benefits from VR, and few games are made with VR in mind. It's a huge investment and requires too much setup for minimal returns in most cases. Even ignoring the cost, you've gotta have a lot of space to make it work well.
Elite Dangerous was the only VR game I managed to get a significant amount of playtime in, but I've heard from people who are really into racing games that it's good for that too. I also get very motion sick when playing most VR games, but I'm not sure how common that is so it's probably not a significant factor.

Yeah, there's just too much of a disconnect when you're not in the pilot/driver seat. It's a real shame there haven't been any good VR mech games. Seems like it would be another good use case. I know MW5 has a VR mod, but I've heard it's kind of shit (both the game and the mod).
MW5's quality is mediocre at best regardless, but that mod also isn't updated and is barely functional nowadays. Every new update and dlc breaks it in more and more ways and the dev doesn't work on it, hasn't since jan 2022. You can technically get it to work, but there are broken cockpits, broken maps, textures get fucked up because of changes, etc.

I bought a steering wheel+pedals finally, set up richard burns rally and dirt 2.0 and am actually using the VR headset I bought years ago more than ever before. Also heavily modded skyrimVR is worth it, especially recently with DLSS upscaling and impact sparks to go with FRIK and higgs. RBR did kill most other modern racing games for me everything feels like skating on ice now.

- some serious games like Alex had to played via cable or fuck off, no integral hardware on a helmet to do it normally

- AirLink is a jackshit, sometimes it can just stop working, it's not just my problem, almost everyone have it
- and yet it still better than lighthouses
- Steamhelmet is a joke, knuckles require lighthouses AND cable connections, so you have to have an empty room so nothing will be in a way of lighthouses beaming, cable better be typed to a fucking roof and your HIGH FUCKING END PC HAVE TO BE NEARBY
- you have to buy side shit like straps, external batteries, and somehow deal with the sweat from your forehead rolling on lenses when you play active games problem
- setup is irritating, it's not plug-and-play
- porn ISN'T WORTH IT. You have to find a proper player for it, set right properties,
and jacking of with a controller in second hand is... not fun. Also Oculus has some problems with translating video higher than 4K via WiFi. So you either download it on a helmet or use cable. Fun.

Bigscreen sounds like on paper, but the cable itself weighs on you and I remember full well how it feels being tethered all the time, it's something you have at the back of your mind at all times in VR and it takes you out of it a bit.
I'd take a significant hit to quality over the inability to move around properly and a cable reminding me which way my PC is, I can outright forget about the real world in a quest 2, that's just not something that's possible in a wired headset.

It shouldn't be blurry, but you'll have compression artifacts on faraway objects, for some this is a huge deal breaker and other people barely notice it.
If you're considering getting in now I'd really suggest waiting for a quest 3, it'll have a better lens so things will be clearer all around the image (right now for most headsets the image will not be as clear if you look away from the center, due to fresnel lenses) as well as have more power to deal with the compression I mentioned.

Yes. Anyone who says VR won't be blurry is lying, because basic human vision is 20/20, which equates to 60PPD. People with glasses have PPD in excess of 100.
VR? Well, the top end, absolute best headsets you can buy right now, that aren't even out? You might get 30 PPD if you're lucky. For something like Quest 2? You'll get 15. For an idea of what this will look like, get out a ruler, and measure 6 inches from your screen (assuming 24" 1080p) to your eye.
There's a difference between blurry and pixelated, no modern VR headset should be remotely blurry unless your IPD is off or you forgot a prescription, but you can probably pick out pixels if you look for them on nearly any of them.
I think there's a lot of nuance in word choice that people here lack, say what you actually mean.
The Quest 2 is notoriously blurry compared to other headsets. I've also tried turning the resolution way up when in Quest Link and I've always struggled to perceive a noticeable improvement in clarity.

You can increase the bitrate, you can turn on sharpening, you can turn on HEVC video rendering, but at the end of the day, the quest 2 is dependent on recording a video stream and sending it to your headset for decoding. There will always be compression artifacts and blurring of some kind.

If you're running standalone, it's quite sharp. The problem is that the standalone games are of such low graphic quality that it doesn't really matter because it's not impressive. If you're using a link cable, there's a huge amount of overhead on the PC side because the GPU has to do the decoding. There are definite limits to it and it's kind of shitty compared to a full uncompressed display port connection. I would take wired over wireless still. Can't stand slight compression artifacting and latency spikes due to interference. I could never get any of the wireless solutions to work perfectly. Closest I came was using Virtual Desktop. Even with a usb3 link cable I would still prefer uncompressed wired.

Here's a fun one. You know video? AMD can't even decode higher than 6k, on high end cards. Modern codecs are just that bloated because bitrates are so low that they expect the processors to pick up all the slack.
And what's worse, the market has no reason to ever go above 4k for living room distances. So the 16k video dream for half decent picture quality in VR? It'll never happen. And we aren't even talking about all the videos shot incorrectly, with fucked up depth, weird IPD settings, or on cheap dogshit cameras. VR porn is a minor novelty at best.

Not enough system sellers or devs who are experienced/passionate enough to make VR games. Rhythm games and sports sims and stuff are where VR shines. Other genres like shooters are also a fundamentally good fit for VR but there are not nearly enough games with enough content in the story mode.

The problem with this, is that if you use hand oriented locomotion, you can just move your wrist left and right. You're still holding "forward", but now you can strafe at twice the speed. Comedy fucking gold.

You can play FO4 in VR but it's jank and not very well done. And that's just the regular game. The VR implementation is really half assed.

If you ask me, I think a lighter VR headset with an actually well made Kinect with AI enhanced object detection (and an omnidirectional trackpad) is unironically the way forward if we don't include futuristic options such as a BCI or Full Dive.
Why? Most games in VR tries to use the perspective to create immersion but grabbing things isn't as intuitive as it could be, but a high tech equipment recognizing your movements and intentions in an instant would help wonders tbh.

I didn't know I had to spell it out given the context. Yes, you can buy attachments to track a few points, hell you could buy a body suit. (How many games support these?) We are talking why VR failed. One reason it failed is because it's cumbersome to set up and wear. kinect is a pointcloud/laser tracking device, would put your whole body in VR with no set up required.

VR is incredible. It will never replace 2d gaming, it still has a long way to go.
There are moments in VR where you feel completely present in the game, it's immersion that you will never feel in 2d. Once you feel it it's just like, oh holy shit this is the future. This is beyond words. Only a fucking retard couldn't see it. Is it worth it to buy now? Completely subjective and I'd lean toward no.

That didn't happen with the first PSVR. PC didn't even get the RE7 VR implemented.
PSVR1 was weird, it was all camera pixel based tracking, not even room scale or proper motion controllers. Some games did get ported though like Hitman, Moss, No Man's Sky
I agree with you about the fucked up PSVR1, Moss was an Oculus game, Hitman and NMS were ported from PC to PSVR not and not the other way around though.

one thing these lose is foot rotation/flex, better immersion if you can push things with your feet, see them represented along with your arms/hands. Less about "Need" for gameplay, and more for fulfilling the dream of actual VR, being transported into virtual worlds.
I think deep learning would be able to infer the pose you are in, or kinect v3 could use wifi body tracking(pretty new) to give an extra tracking boost.

in my opinion there was two main reasons VR hasn't taken off
1. The Insistence of Devs/people trying to force the style of traditional games to work in VR even when it obviously won't.
2. over focus on "realism" like for example VR Shooters are one of the biggest offenders of this how many people refuse to touch a VR game if its guns don't have "Realistic reloading"
like for example two of the best type of VR games are the more arcade style games and Escape room/puzzle style games and to a lesser extent horror games and 'cockpit games'
Imagine if a new House of the Dead game was made purely for VR in an almost exact style of all the traditional old school "rail shooters" and doesn't play any differently to them such a game would be almost ruined by stuff like realistic reloads. or being able to move freely around the level/world but rail shooters would be near perfect compromise to deal with the weaknesses of current VR has (lack of good 'comfortable' movement options)
VR should be about letting people witness/do the absolute absurd over the top shit that they can't do IRL, but instead people focused entirely on trying to recreate a primitive holodeck from Star Trek.
Compound has different reloads for every weapon but it doesn't take away from the gameplay.

SkyrimVR definitely counts with some of the mods it has adding actual VR functionality and interaction. Agree with FO4VR being borderline not really VR because it utterly lacks anything but a really janky clone of VRIK.
