I didn't hate it, it's my second favorite half life game (HL1 is still superior) and in my opinion the Jeff chapter was as engaging as Ravenholm was back in the day, but I think it could have been better than it was. I don't like the Joss Whedonism "well that just happened" style Russell dialogue, and there was an extremely infuriating missed opportunity to make "The Alyx" as iconic as gordon's crowbar by turning it into the taser from Syphon Filter.
Another thing is I think the game balance is a bit weird, even if you do a lot of headshots enemies feel very tanky. I understand the combine have armor, but it just feels off. More enemies in the game needed weak points to shoot like the standard combine and the zombies had. My complaints with the game's balance are mostly remedied by installing Merciless Half Life: Alyx, however.

This is technically unrelated to the game itself, but I don't like that we didn't get the straight up Source 2 SDK, just "alyx workshop", you're stuck with the same 3 weapons for every mod, the only mods I've played to make them seem interesting and different are Gunman Contracts and "OPERATOR".

valve cares alot about making their games very accessible and that mindset in a vr game makes for less interesting gameplay thar takes less advantage of the medium of vr. As more fun mechanics make alot of people motionsick

though even going off VR games clearly made to be someone's first I honestly think I had alot more fun with robo recall

Alyx is done well and always has been because the fact that she's black or a woman never actually matters. She's still interesting as a character without having to wear her diversity on her sleeve.

I didn't, I enjoyed it a lot and played through it twice. H8 how slow the antlions are but I understand why they did it, same with the slow walking/falling speed. Russell is alright, I like the idea but wish it was more 'teaching Alyx what a BLT is' than the silliness.

I enjoyed it, but it's probably my least favorite HL to replay
I personally enjoy HL2:VR much more

Pretty cool mod, just wish the design of Krystal's model was a lot closer to the one from Star Fox Adventures or Star Fox Assault.

VR is a pointless gimmick, after 10 minutes it stops being immersive and starts being annoying to play

I don't think any HL fan who played it hated it. It's an objectively great game.
Of course it's not made to be played on a flat screen with a kb+m like so people did with a mod and thought it was too short and easy

I didn't exactly hate it, but I was initially underwhelmed by how restricted/simplified VR experience was. It's an incredibly high-effort VR vidya, but at the same time it has lots of stuff that makes VR feel underutilized, like inability to deal damage through swinging environment bits like chairs and bricks, or gun being a switch on your controller that welds into your hand rather than a physical object. Mods took care of it, I understand why devs did it, I can appreciate it now that some time has passed and initial feels went away, but that didn't change my first impression.

None of that was exactly a bad choice, it fits the game, but eh, I do remember being disappointed about that. There was Boneworks, there was Blade&Sorcery, ItR, even basic Pavlov where you can snatch someone's mag from the gun as long as gun has no mag release button, and then there's alyx where most of VR interactions are extremely simplified or even removed entirely. Still, I didn't hate it at all, after first hour or two I got along with it and then it was a great, great ride to the very end of the game.

A missed opportunity to make the best vr shooter of all time, instead we got baby's first vr game. Its pretty and immersive but that's the most praise I'll give it.
    Pic related playtested the game

It's a great game but it's only a few hours long and VR is too much of a hassle.

They did a great job with all the environment interactivity and there's a lot of very fun and cool stuff that you just can't experience without VR. The whole Jeff segment in particular was a really impressive way to blend all the different mechanics together.
At the same time, though, all the downsides of VR like motion sickness, discomfort, limited space, streaming hiccups, etc. plus the slow movement inherently limited by VR make you wish you were just sat at your desk playing a normal Half-Life game with the modern graphics instead.

I liked it. Wish it had a more substantial story rather than just being an alternative perspective of hl2 and the episodes.

Migraines. I do think it's a very good game though. I felt extremely immersed, even with the stupid screen door effect from the headset.
