Why didn't Archer act more like an archer in the 5th HGW?

Why didn't Archer act more like an archer in the 5th HGW? Hollow Ataraxia clearly shows that he could have been really overpowered if he wasn't so autistic about fighting everyone hand to hand. Imagine constantly being under the threat of getting a miniature nuke shot at you from miles away.

    Archer's priorities are:
    >Make past me not be a moron.
    >Rin wins the war
    >Frick that blonde guy.
Winning isn't really on his agenda and he probably knows he was summoned mostly in response to the Grail's corruption more than anything else.
That said, Archer at full power still isn't really that impressive. What makes him formidable is a mix of Independant Action and his own toolkit as having swords that replicate 30% of their wielders ability.
Reminder that most regular archers are absolutely bullshit and EMIYA is only barely qualified for the class.

      Anonymous

Ignoring FGO nonsense I can't think of any Archer with something as busted as Broken Phantasm spam except Gil and Herk. I doubt any of the FGO servants that actually adhere to the original summoning rules can keep up either.

        Anonymous

F/GO rules apply only to F/GO because you aren't Grail Summoning. War rules don't apply, the FATE system does not use a Grail and the Servants are summoned by mutual contract rather than the Grail's "best for you" approach.
Its bullshit and matters only if you wanna wank off the idea of summoning Beasts or Sub'Niggurath or whatever.

But...isn't Independent Action only useful when he has no Master to supply him? It's almost as bad as Battle Continuation, like either skill is going to change anything once a Servant's master or the Servant himself is effectively dead.

In the specific scenario of him being summoned to the 5th, IA lets him do impressive set-up and more or less ignore Rin's dumber moves in favour of using his fore knowledge.
Being able to use his extreme range and ability to act without orders make him one of the better servants in the war.

Because it's a bad story. Think about it. Some random human has the ability to recreate almost any magical weapons despite the fact he is often times weaker than said weapons and would logically have less magical energy than it took to produce said weapons.
You start off with fundamentally flawed logic for his powers and this flawed logic continues into almost every other character.
Nasu has fun world building but he's too obsessed with writing cool moments and having characters do cool things to make sensible stuff. Sitting several miles away while an enemy takes impossibly accurate potshots isn't as cool as fighting where the opponent can engage with him so Nasu lets logic take a backseat.

      Anonymous

They are impossibly accurate because Archer deliberately used a sword that cannot miss its target as an arrow. It's a homing missile.

        Anonymous

Yeah and? Like I said, he COULD just sit back and do that every fight but that wouldn't be "cool" or "fun" so Nasu doesn't have him do it.

I feel like you're just outright ignoring what I said so you can talk about how dangerous an ability like that is. Again, like I said, he COULD do that but it wouldn't be fun for the reader. At the same time, Nasu can't control himself and gave him the ability to do that anyway because he loves crazy shit like that.

He's not really making them, he's pulling them out of another dimension. Have you not read the VN?

Most Noble Phantasms should be beyond him before he becomes servant worthy. Really think about it. He doesn't have much more mana than an average mage yet somehow he's able to whip out all these complex and super powered weapons just because he scanned them. Do you REALLY believe modern mages are supposed to be able to recreate stuff like that, even WITH an Origin specifically aligned to "sword"?

Its a point that he shouldn't but a combo of being bound to Avalon all his life and the freaking healing abilities it gave him broke through the wall.
By the time he becomes Alaya's b***h as a Counter Guardian his Origin is awakening, so he can do way more since his entire being is soon to be sword, that red shawl being a mystic code that prevents it from getting out of hand.
A normal person using a NP should be killing him, since any human using a NP without some serious hoops being jumped through should either kill or cripple them.

But any weapon that he makes is only about 30% as effective as the real counterpart, what makes them useful at all is that the memories of whoever used them get implaced with the trace.
Its like a mostly ineffective form of copy cating.

UBW is not subject to conservation of energy. The swords - and other weapons - appear there just because they do, they aren't produced from Shirou's mana.

This is why reality marbles are considered very close to true sorcery in universe. Shirou is like one of 5 humans to ever gain this ability.

When he copies them from his reality marble to the real world they DO cost a lot of mana. He is able to survive his brain melting from doing this because he is fused with a magic item of regeneration basically.

I've said this before but Assassin would be by far the most busted class if it was used by someone with two braincells. Just hide out in a untraceable location and have your servant wait for the perfect chance to gank each master. The only possible counter would be an archer who could persist after their master's death and even then the assassin could just frick off with stealth.

In an ideal scenario the masters Saber and Lancer should be nowhere close to their servants, assassin and their master are fricked if they are ever discovered by design anyway, and the master of Caster should be deep within their servant’s workshop and behind like a billion protective spells and shit.
