Bottomless pits aren't real, so they're just pits of any particularly long drop. Caped Mario still dies in such pits. The drop down into Bowser's world from those pipes would certainly qualify as particularly long drops, so Mario would have died if he tried.

Mario canonically went on his entire adventure with the help of Yoshi, and you can't fly with Yoshi, just jump really high and slowly glide downward
if bowser was smarter he'd just attack mario in the overworld where he can't jump or use his items.
