Why didn't they listen?

>Hiroshi Yamauchi spent nearly two decades warning the video game industry that constantly rising development costs, extended development cycles, and fewer game releases would be unsustainable long temr
>Satoru Iwata, his successor, also spent years issuing these same warnings
>no one listened, they laughed at them and called them bitter about Nintendo losing its grip on the industry
>fast forward to 2024
>studios closing by the dozens, games taking a half decade to release, selling eight figures and still not recouping costs
>even Microsoft, the infinite money printer, may be leaving the industry soon
>meanwhile Nintendo is thriving, posting record profits, almost every game they release is a smash success
>even expanding into multimedia, doubling their work force, even opening theme parks
Why the frick didn't they listen Ganker? All they had to do was listen.

They did listen, and the indie scene has never been bigger or better than it is right now, which will be the future of games development. You'll have your "big scale blockbuster" releases from major studios, but the common releases will mostly be indie and double-A releases.

    >making the same low quality slop over and over again is the only way to sustain
It really helps that Nintendo caters to children but if any other company ceases to experiment then they will be in peril.

Surely you're not implying the current state of AAA development is in any way high quality.

that sounds pretty much like every other company, and yet nintendo is the only one doing it right

Nintendo has been profitting mostly off Mario's brand renown and Pokemon. Their games other-wise have not been particularly huge outside of those two things, and even still, they only make a profit on Pokemon not because it's such a huge blockbuster, but because they pump out 50 of those fricking little shit games a year, and the fans buy them all.

Tears of the Kingdom was only the 5th best-selling game of 2023, and was Nintendo's biggest title that year, and Breath of the Wild was the 9th best selling game of 2017, and Mario Kart outsold it.

The only things that outsold TOTK last year was multiplatform yearly slop like Calladoody and Fifa. The only not yearly multiplatform game that beat it was Hogwarts.

moron, his point was that they're successful because they have a legacy brand and also because their input-output ratio guarantees profit, not because they are the most lucrative company. Microsoft is the largest video game company per Market Cap, and it's not even close.

      >Nintendo has been profiting mostly off Nintendo brand renown
      Yes
      >they only make a profit on Nintendo brand not because it's such a huge blockbuster, but because they pump out 50 Nintendo brand games a year
Yes but also because many of them are huge blockbusters that continue being so throughout their console's lifespan
      >and the fans buy them all
      Yes

      Compare this to Sony:
      >Spend ten years betting it all on Call of Duty, a franchise they don't even own a percentage of (and PS+ subs because that is free money)
      >Waste all CoD money on TLOU movie games, first-party games that have extremely massive budgets yet barely manage to break even within the year even after bundling them with every console, controller, and headset at gamestop
      >Have absolutely no backup plan whatsoever when Call of Duty suddenly disappears from their dinner plate

      or Microwiener:
      >Buys a shitton of game developer studios and their IPs because nobody cares about their own first-party games from the 360 era
      >Starts a new high risk bet with Game Pass, a digital rental subscription service that doesn't even require an Xbox console for gamers to take advantage of
      >Buys CoD with plans to put that on Game Pass, along with every single other now "first-party" game going forward
      >Be surprised that people aren't buying the consoles or the games anymore because Game Pass has effectively replaced both

    >Why the frick didn't they listen Ganker? All they had to do was listen.
    >implying this wasn’t part of MS’s plan
You know a lot about Ninty but not MS. This is part of their E3 plan as most tech companies, Embrace/extend/extinguish. The idea is to cause a complete power vacuum in the industry. The whole cloud shit they were autistic about, and still are, is to gain exclusive rights over games while bankrupting the rights holder. When that doesn’t work, just close down everyone you acquired

All those companies MS bought? It was made to make the green line go up so they can later close down the studios. Soon, you will hear Microsoft licensing, not selling, out the Xbox brand to anyone who wants to make their own Xbox with their software and games. They will never sell the ips they bought once everything gets shut down.

If you’re asking about everyone else, it’s a mix of vanity projects and politics agendas that might or might not have had financial backing, to make a point or sway public discourse/opinion.

The creators did listen. They were the ones saying it. It's the CEOs and shareholders who don't listen. And they don't care about long term profits or goals. Just getting maximum profits in the next 1-5 years.

their game development is fricking SLOW now.
so many ports and remasters its disgusting. they are merely like five years behind the rest of the industry but they will catch up to its issues soon enough unless they actually change course.
