I wonder how deep this effect was. I never played it (obviously) but what I saw looked a lot like this, a world you would never want to go to. Not just ugly downtown NYC people but dead world, filled with annoying shitters/NPCs, in some apocalypse you have to deal with. It's like the writers completely misunderstood the appeal Isekai.
It's more a generic video game world (but ugly) where the player character origin wouldn't matter because you're just up to video gamey shit, but they insisted on having one from Earth to contrast with the fantasy realm anyways.
