Look at what happened to home video. It's completely dead due to Netflix. The same will happen to videogames and this time it will be worse because it will introduce unfixable input latency. Truly lag-free gaming at 1000FPS will never be possible.
Preservation will become impossible as you are removed from the files of the game itself. You will never be able to play the original version of a vidya, it will either be completely lost or you'll only be granted access to a later, edited version. For example the radio songs removed from GTA: Vice City. You can mod them back in, but you wouldn't on a streaming service.
You won't even be able to turn to piracy anymore, the best you can hope for is pirating a streamed videogame.
Next they will come for the personal computer as a concept.

It's all the same shit. Gamepass will move to a streaming-only model. They've already introduced Xbox cloud gaming.

                Anonymous

You CAN stream them and in the future you'll have only streamable games, like maybe that one Hideous Pyjama game which is a cloud game originally intended for Stadia according to rumors.

I love video games. I love film too, and music. What happened to them is tragic. Spotify made being an artist harder and cut income for the music industry by half.

                Anonymous

Film and music have always been hit or miss. There has been a sea of shit amongst the few movies and music worth your time, that are truly worth your time. A good question is how many movies can you remember from the 1940s? Thousands of movies released but there are maybe 30 or so max actually worth going back to.
Games have probably had a higher median quality but it's still the same question: what percent of games in $X_YEAR are actually worth playing today? Probably less than 10%. Quality ebbs and flows. You can say that games are being politicized today, which is true, but this typically dies down after a few years

                Anonymous

Of course. You get it. And preservation is worth it for that 1 in 10.
Wouldn't it be tragic if, in 100 years, nobody could play Super Mario Bros anymore? Undoubtedly a part of history, and just gone.

                Anonymous

No, I agree with you. I think it is worthwhile to preserve games and to have them available in non-streaming forms.
That being said I think a lot of people hide behind preservation as a means to pirate, which is fine but seems somewhat disingenuous to me

Piracy is caused by the current system. Nobody should feel bad for sharing. The solution is to pay for production rather than distribution.

                >home video dead due to Netflix
What do you mean by homevideo? I'm pretty sure TV has never been as good as it is today, literal kino better than movies and at times even bigger budgets.

                >truly lag free gaming at 1000FPS will never be possible
Why would you even want to achieve 1000FPS anyways?

                >Preservation
This are toys, no reason to preserve them lol its not fricking literature.

                >cant turn to piracy
not poor, have not pirated a game since I was 13. dont care.

                >next they will come for the personal computer as a concept
Sure, they could. Doesn't sound profitable though.

                >TV has never been as good as it is today
TV has always been a crapshoot. A few good ones, but mostly garbage. And this is true even since the 1950s and its bland garbage like Leave it to Beaver.
Netflix is not home video. It has slowed adoption of UHD Bluray which is the first format capable of faithfully capturing true cinema quality. The bitrate on Netflix is at best one quarter of UHD Bluray and this 2016 disc format won't be surpassed for decades. Netflix has all the preservation issues I outlined but also simply because you can't own anything they make.
                >Why would you even want to achieve 1000FPS
Latency reduction, low motion blur, and the phantom array effect.
                >Muh toys
And you told me I don't like videogames. Art is worth preserving.
                >Muh not poor
Piracy will still exist. What I mean is that piracy won't even allow for ownership anymore.

When I first got my 3DS it happened within a few months of launch, so I ended up in Nintendo's old Ambassador Program. It came with a ton of free games (I think it was 10 NES games and 10 GBA games or something) that I played for years. They weren't shit either, it was mainline Nintendo titles like Metroid Fusion and Fire Emblem and whatnot. At the time thought it was nice. I wish they would still do that shit instead of making me eat crumbs with Kirby spin-off shit on the Switch on rare occasions.
