Because fantasy is a returning to our Indo-European roots, embracing the beauty of the culture of old, with themes of good vs evil, human development, as well as courage and tribulation. Meanwhile sci-fi is largely a babylonian israeli invention meant to proliferate the ideology of scientism, with themes of nihilism, promethean transhumanism, and beatific Babylonian notions of utopia; most often being communistic.

lol no it isn't, fantasy is literally a low effort parody of the works that came before. It's all Tolkien ripoffs that can't reach the same quality because it's all cynically phoned in.

Fantasy and to a large part Tolkien is based on Indo European tradition which is actually rooted in history and the powers of our ancestors, which a israelite like you wouldn't understand. Creating rootless, soulless, babylonian abstract realms in your dyne to be as gods and the creator of a brass and steel god is not creativity, creativity is codeword for subversion.

Sci fi requires putting the player in a world they are not familiar with and most writers do not have the skill or patience to do that. Fantasy draws from millenia old myth and lore that just about everyone at least has a gut feel about. Also scifi writers sometimes get too deep in exposition about their science stuff that they forget to write a good story.

A lot of sci fi may as well be magic. A lot of them fail because they think the novelty of the 'science' is enough to carry a story that does not even bother to connect with people. There's a reason Star Wars (was) one of the most successful scifi stories of all time which is essentially a thousand year old epic told with lasers and spaceships.

        Anonymous

Well yes, a bit of magic is no stranger to sci fi work, even without getting into the Clark rule that people love to quote incorrectly so much. All the same I still think there's a bit more good sci fi needs to be mindful of. And fantasy elements aside I think Star Wars worked more from taking from the Kurosawa stuff it did. It's less DnD in space and more, well exactly, Hidden Fortress with lasers.

The universal translator has picked up whispers from some of the locals, believing I have the "Blade of Luminance" or something.

Just make words up in either case. Sci-fi gets a lot LESS flak when its stuff doesn't make sense (especially if you use made-up particles and wavelengths and matter that operate on whatever laws you want it to, vaguely refer to actual physics and natural laws to feign credibility without directly invoking them and you're all good) compared to a fantasy setting where people will shit on it for not having strict rules for its magic.

Why? scifi is often cold, dark and metallic, with artificial lights and cold colors, while fantasy usually has its fair share of more relatable stuff, like rocks, water, green grass and blue skies, trees etc. it just feels good. playing horror games or dark games is jarring is you do it too much while games like mario sunshine are a joy because the water sun etc are positive things that we are drawn to.
who the fricks wants to live in a concrete house full of plastic black and white ikea furniture with metal everywhere, in a communist block with a forever dark sky or whatever? the sunny house with grass, trees etc is the feel good place, thats familiar and good for human life so we are more drawn to that. you could say you can have dark fantasy settings and lighter scifi but at the end of the day one has more natural settings and the other has cold mettalic settings with artificial lights, all things that dont feel very good for us people

Writing sci fi requires looking at the future. The future today is so bleak no one wants to look at it. This is also why isekai is so popular, shit is so fricked the only way to fix it is to fricking die and start over in a different world.

  18. 10 months ago

It's an actual fricking mystery to me.

I think it may have something to do with good science fiction writer (or any other kind of creator) having to be at least somewhat competent in fields related to shit he writes about. Most of prominent ones I recall were related to engineering/math/astronomy/etc. You don't need anything like that to write fantasy.

But this definitely isn't the only reason.

You can rip off Tolien wholesale because even he was, by his own admission, pulling from a bunch of mythological sources. So you got elves and dwarves and it's whatever. Sci Fi is too new so everyone knows when you're ripping off Klingons or Vulcans and the like.

      Anonymous

      >Aliens are harder to come up
Humanlike aliens are completely legitimate, argument for that is evolution, which solves problem of sentient life emergence through ungodly amount of bruteforcing, being bound to come to similar results in different places, because it is constrained by same laws of physics, chemistry and common sense. It is more likely that writers like Lem trying to imagine as outlandish and incomprehensible alien life as possible were overthinking.

        Anonymous

        >Humanlike aliens are completely legitimate
NTA mostly in an evolutionary sense yes, but culturally they'd be so much more different and I doubt any sci-fi setting will ever nail that. 99% of our culture has been made through historic adaptation of our mannerisms to our environment. If berries were more abundant on earth, we could have evolved to be much more herbivorous. If shit would have been more dire at some point, we could all be cannibals (well, and if Kuru wasn't a thing).
Aliens being humanlike in the sense that they have sophisticated communication, limbs capable of fine manipulation or them not really excelling in anything and instead being able to do everything well a little makes sense, but they wouldn't even have to be bipedal or have a neck like we do.

          Anonymous

2 hands 2 legs is the perfect amount most likely cause you want less brain for limb control and more for thinking.

Humanlike aliens are the most realistic form aliens can have because the only intelligent life we know of is humans and the only place with life is Earth.
I remember biology research about different plants in similar environments but having nothing to do with each other evolving in the same way (they look the same and function) because there are only so many viable options that let you survive and thrive in such environment.

Sci-fi is dying because it's almost always based on the idea that we will one day progress into escaping our atmosphere and colonize space. It is pretty clear at this point that we, at least for this civilizational cycle, have chosen a very different path and will never achieve anything so great again. Dreaming of the stars is ridiculous when we can't even keep our streets clean, why frustrate ourselves with unattainable goals. Maybe our great-great-great-great-great grandchildren will go to space thanks to learning from our mistakes, but another dark age will pass first.

Actual stats show poverty increasing exponentially, crime sky rocketing, and general quality of life taking a nose dive off the cliff. What sort of lala fantasy land did you walk out of? Literally nothing you just said is correct.

I will not argue with you about established fact. Use fricking google, unless you mean literally ONLY in the last 5 years, life's getting better on average for everyone. That is a fact, that is indisputable.
Of course it fluctuates year by year or even decade by decade, ~1940 obviously had some hard hits, but IN THE LONG RUN shit only gets better

You aren't gonna argue because you can't. Life has only gotten worse for the past 100 years and is only accelerating.

I'm not arguing because it would be too easy. I only need 10 seconds of googling to get this info but there's so many sources that someone speaking against it is utterly deranged. Again, I'll never argue established fact, boomer.

Millennials are even more responsible. The only "innocent" ones that simply live in the fricked world the others made is basically everyone born after 1990-ish

Millennials like gen X before them have basically no influence. Neither will zoomers for that matter. The gen after will be the first gen since boomers to actually have any chance of changing shit.

Noone. The population pressure to get off planet is not there anymore for anyone and the finance industry have sucked up all the smart people in all industrialized societies. Unless they find the secret to immortality in space somewhere we won't be doing much except for as stunts or propaganda.

This area (the part being destroyed the most, coincidentally). Maybe if China/Japan could pick up the best minds from this area before they go extinct, they could do it. Brown people literally cannot exist in space, because a low trust society is a doomed one. One chimpout takes out your life support and everyone dies. You need the kind of stock of people where you could leave a kiosk out in the open, with no clerk or guard, and people would obey an honor system to purchase goods without anyone stealing money from the basket.

You've never lived in Europe huh? Most useless comfort seeking navel gazing culture on the planet. Whatever drive they had back in the 19th century is well and truly gone and they will disappear into obscurity soon enough.

Yes, civilizations rise and fall. Hence why I'm saying that another dark age needs to pass first. When the next great men are born, they will have a technological headstart. The next "rennaisance" or "age of discovery" period may be when they go to space. They will have the technology, but a much stronger mindset than liberalism and nihilism.

Because people have no hope for the future. A sci-fi future is a further stretch on the suspension of disbelief than magic and dragons.
