The pin implies her dad is Ash, why else go through the contrivance of making both her parents got to school to Kanto if they're all from Paldea, she even fricks off from the school after 2-3 eps so it's not like the show is set there

Ok but her canon name is still Liko, not Riko. It's Liko in Japanese too.

The Japanese does not distinguish the R and L sounds semantically. The official romanization system - Kunrei Shiki - used by the Japanese government tells us to transliterate the RaRiRuReRo Hiragana line with the R sound. In the actual anime, they say, Riko. There's no reason to call her Liko aside from some English dub speculations.

Shit take, I think TPCI's dub was shit compared to 4Kids' dub and TPCI was worse in all ways save censorship by now with Pokemon- but keeping Liko the same is a good thing for once!

I'm worried about the dub, though, praying they don't butcher Horizons like they did the Ashime from BF onward into JN.

Official promotional stuff, showed their names written out as Liko and Roy, so that's what was intended. /vp/ anons who I guess don't actually watch stuff in Japanese seem to have recently latched hard onto "b-b-but Japanese has no L sound so only Riko can be right" to be contrarians while ignoring/not being aware that a name's literal pronunciation/katakana reading doesn't always directly correspond to how you might actually correctly romanize it. For another Pokemon example, think how it's officially Lillie even in Japanese and not Rirrie or some shit, despite technically being written like the latter because in Japanese there's no other way to write it.

And yeah admittedly Liko sounds kind of weird and Riko sounds like a more acceptably "anime" name, but the fact they've officially shown it as Liko and her name is spelled with an L in literally every other language too (and it seems with this series they seem to want the dubs to stick pretty closely to the original name) makes it clear what the intent is.

Also if you look up how the Japanese Pokemon names are officially romanized in Japan, you'll see a lot of spellings that don't directly correspond to the katakana and might look pretty weird from the outside. Ex. Eevee is written Iibui/Iivui but officially spelled Eievui in Japanese merchandise. It's not intuitive but since it's the official spelling, it's what it is.

      >think how it's officially Lillie even in Japanese
      It's not, it's "Lilie".
Lilie is German for lily and is pronounced "LEE-lee-eh", not "LILL-ee". Her English name is quite different, it's just that the spelling looks similar at a glance.

        Anonymous

Yeah, I spelled it wrong, my mistake. I knew it was based off German and how it was pronounced (that is, not like "Lily"), but I'm not a German speaker so fricked it up.

My main point was that even in Japanese, they wouldn't spell it with an R when romanizing her name even if it's written that way in katakana.

Will the actual dub stick to the script, music, and cast good VAs? Even keeping Liko's name the same won't save Horizons dubbed if it's dubbed as badly as TPCI does/handled the Anime and Movies related to Ash.

It'll just be like 4K YGO, Yugi's name was kept the same but 4Kids treated Yu-Gi-Oh far worse than Pokemon overall.

      >makes it clear what the intent is.
I'm gonna need a direct quote from OLM.
"What their intent is" is irrelevant fanfiction speculation until somebody in an official position, like Dai Sato or Kunihiko Yuyama, Riko's seiyuu or somebody like that actually confirms the "Liko" romanization, with an "L"

        Anonymous

I mean, yeah, I didn't want to write an essay so if merchandise etc., or the show itself, or anything official comes out showing it written as "Riko," then there's room for argument that Liko is wrong.

But right now the only romanized spelling being used in official sources is Liko.

        Anonymous

Bro all the official sources already spell it as Liko, there's no speculstion here that's just the way it is
