Why do localizers ruin games? This shit is legit embarrassing to play.

Its an anime game
It’s embarrassing to play anyway
fpbp.
Honestly, I can understand having a position against bad localization, but I can't take autists who shit their pants with daily threads about it seriously. Taking videogames that seriously as a hobby is already embarrassing enough that getting outraged about shit like this seems pointless to me. Obvious (You)s farming thread.
I can't understand autists who go into localization threads to scream loudly about how much they don't care.
>look at me, look at how much I don't care, this doesn't matter, look at how much this doesn't matter! look at me! I'm not caring!!
1:01 apart
>
>look at me, look at how much I don't care, this doesn't matter, look at how much this doesn't matter! look at me! I'm not caring!!
>
hmm(You)
relax
getting desperate?
>1 minute apart

getting desperate?

keep saying it
Why do you think your Ganker posts deserve to be taken seriously?
Why do you think your Ganker posts deserve to be seen at all?
It's irrelevant because they are seen anyways.
You make a fair point, but, ultimately, I'm just voicing an opinion that I know will make you guys mad.
I rally didn't choose for Ganker's catalog to be 70% outrage garbage at every hour of the day with 20% being coomer threads and the rest of the 10% of actual bidya discussion being about recent games that I, sometimes, don't play with only a couple of threads once in a while pertaining to my interest. So the rest of the time I entertain myself in the daily autist diaper shitting threads, putting oil on the fire.
Not happy about it? Well maybe stop chasing outrage with such fervor and talk and make the board talk about things that people actually enjoy.
>Why don't you leave?
Good question. Maybe I've just been here for too long.
>I'm just voicing an opinion that I know will make you guys mad.
>Obvious (You)s farming thread.
hm
Exactly. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
If you hate the game, it is hypocritical not to hate the player as well.
True, but you're gonna play anyways.
So who's the fool? The one who hates a game, but plays it anyways or one who plays the game and love it?
Wanting to be taken seriously on Ganker is a noob mistake.
>wanting to be taken seriously
you're the only one who keeps repeating this
it sounds more like you're trying to fool yourself
So why do you play a game that you hate if not to be heard and taken seriously?
Can you go one post without saying something about "taken seriously" or "playing the game"? Your first post was whining about "autists" but you're looking more and more autistic yourself with every post you make.
So what? Do I look like someone who wants to be taken seriously?
yes
Oh? Well certainly you are taking me seriously enough at least.
im just taking the game seriously while playing the game
Ah, the classic "I am a cunt therefore I assume everyone else is too". I'm sure there was a saying about this but I can't recall it right now.
i don't, they're taken however they are, because that's the nature of online discussion.
why are you even attempting to undermine my opinions by calling this and my posts' merit into question?
Rat in a corner mentality
>haha bro, it's just [THING], stop caring about the quality XD
hmm
So as long as I cover it with a thin layer of "haha look at how aloof and uncaring I am" while keeping the shitting on localizers part exactly the same, you'll stop whining about the posts?
>I entered a thread with things that I do not like and now I am mad
Islam was right about women.
leave if you don't like it, gay
Fpbp
It's always funny watching weebs cry about literal cartoons being turned even more retarded than they already were
that's unironically funny though
Does Grossburg look like the kind of bloke who'd know what the Harlem Shake even is?
The translation is jarringly dumb.
yes, he looks like a fat nerd that browses what's popular with the kids of that era.
Again, he's not referring to the fucking meme you retard, it's a translation from 2000s
It's just a dance he's heard about
Zoomers try to have IQ over 40 challenge (impossible)
>zoomer joke
hmm
It's not a zoomer joke retard, the translation is older than the meme, and that meme is 11 years old anyway
He says "Harrem Shakaru" in Japanese bro
I look like him and I have no idea what it is
Harlem Shake as a dance existed before the 2013 meme.
Also you are now aware that the Harlem Shake meme is 10 years old.
>Harlem Shake was a meme
All this time, I wondered why they played that awful music and began spazzing in the cafeteria.
>tfw forced to make a harlem shake video in shakespearean costumes for my senior year english class
I can only imagine what they make kids do these days.
Phoenix Wright predicted a meme? Damn, it's so ahead of its time
The year that scene was set was 2013 as well
Holy shit. There's fucking time travelers over at Capcom.
I think Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style were when I first noticed the internet being infiltrated by normal people en masse and things were never the same.
Yes. It was better when all normies were stuck on Facebook but at some point they ended shitting all over the place.
then what's the original line
i'm not going to witch hunt a localization without a proper comparison first
if the original line references some other kind of dance that was topical with japanese kids of the time, then it would be an appropriate (though still subpar) localization
Frankly, localization dweebs deserve the bullying.
But I'm curious too, does any know what the line originally was?
?t=1502
and a ching chong king kong ping pong to you, kind sir!
>My ass is acting violently! It's acting violently!
There's no particular pun here, from what I can see.
SOVL
Direct translations win again.
after researching he says "my bottom, my bottom... my bottom is acting up"
so they didnt make up his hemorrhoid problem
T&T localization was released 2 years before 2010 when the meme took off.
ITT: Underage gays who've only ever known the internet
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlem_shake_(dance)
As everyone said this is a good example because it had the expression before the meme. Also Mia thinking “I bet her milkshakes bring all the boys to her yard” when she looks at Dahlia made me laugh so hard. This was a good localization.
yeah, about that...
This is fucking retarded. Localizers deserve to be beaten to death
Not even the worst in AA. SOJ is by far the worst offender because it has some significant character and plot related differences
This. I can't believe they turned Phoenix into a chud
You got any examples? I actually liked SoJ aside from fucking Nahyuta, somehow a worse prosecutor than Franziska
titcow clinging to the only thing she has in panic, you love to see it
>Phoenix fucked Dahlia and her sister
based attorney
>dahlia and her sister.
You're talking about Pearl, right?
what is the direct translation of the original? autotranslate just gives me wow or oh my god. not sure how accurate that is.
>good grief
>jeez louise
>sheesh
all valid interpretations. you use it to express disbelief at something.
>>jeez louise
american'isms don't belong in translations or localizations.
>translations
you are right
>localizations
the very definition of localizing for an american audience is removing japanisms and put in there americanisms
Yare Yare...ne.
Means pretty much:
oh jeez...right or
good grief...right
so what
said
Or simply "oh please ...."
Yeah or that.
no no you have it all wrong, it means
>FUCKING HELL
>JESUS CHRIST
>GOD FUCKING DAMNIT
>FUCK ME
and the likes
>the only thing Mia can think when she sees Dahlia is "fuck me"
What did they mean by this?
So the og dialogue was boring, charactereless shit, while the localisation kept the same meaning but gave it personality?
Damn, how terrible.
have a nice day garden gnome.
localizers aren't paid to relive their failed writers dreams and inject whatever story they feel like onto the original story.
stick to the text or i'll wait for a fantranslation made by people who actually care
chihiro thinking yareyare is in reference to naruhodo thinking it all the time in court, it's a joke.
>saying a generic line
>BRO IT MEANT TO BE EPIC REFERENCUH
lmao
it's not an "epic reference". it's observational humor.
>gave it personality
Correct, that's the problem. Mia has always been a very dry character. Not physically, of course
It's yare yare ne. It's a very common exasperation so it's often translated like "Good grief..." In that part, she's watching as Dahlia wraps Payne and the Judge around her finger with pleasantries, so a normal inoffensive translation would be "This is going to be a long trial..."
He's just saying his butt (i.e. his hemmorhoids) are acting up hard since Phoenix just directly implicated himself in the murder. Literally "My butt's acting violently! It's acting violently!" or more naturally "Oh, my hemorrhoids! The pain!"
>good grief
Yeah, localization win there.
muh moron faithful translation is pure bland nothingness.
>wins
it's not a contest, dumbass
>pure bland nothingness
pure bland nothingness is the correct translation to use when the original text uses pure bland nothingness.
changing ANYTHING in this context turns it into fanfiction
Sry moron, but there's this thing with nip dialogue like this one, where the writing in Japanese would be normal, but a direct translation in English is bland as fuck.
The same line doesn't have the same result between the two languages, sucks to suck, the loose translation is better for English.
>better
again, localizations aren't supposed to be BETTER.
IT'S NOT A CONTEST
TRANSLATE THE FUCKING THING
> aren't supposed to be BETTER.
They are supposed to have the SAME RESULT you dumb moron, but guess what, languages are far more different than that.
So muh "SAME RINE", doesn't give the SAME RESULT between two languages, case in point, this translation making Mia's monologue be boring as fucking shit in English, which is not faithful to the Japanese one at all.
I'm just explaining the original text. I only learned Nip after playing the localized version so I still have a fondness for it.
It's too ambiguous. All these years I thought Mia was thinking "well at least my boobs are bigger" when in reality the line was supposed to just express her inner frustration.
The milkshake shit just means "girl who is the most popular with guys".
Wtf did you get Mia thinking "my tits are atleast bigger" from?
well uh my thought process was something like this
>all fans ever bring up about Mia are her boobs
>boobs make milk so if she's talking about milkshakes she probably means boobs
>Dahlia is flat so Mia clearly isn't actually complimenting her boobs (plus the sprite is clearly upset)
>therefore Mia is being glib and thinking that she may not have Dahlia's charisma but at least she has big boobs
Anon, please.
?t=8
anon... milkshake is a metaphor for sexual prowess in this song
first anon is exactly correct that milk = tits
No. It's just the sexual prowess part or more simply her female charm, in which Dahlia is completely overpowering Mia since she has the court eating out of the palm out of her hand. It has nothing to do with Mia's tits in that context.
i have no clue what you're talking about, i just posted to tell you that the song milkshake is indeed about sex, so using it to disprove the guy thinking milk = sex is pants on head retarded
And sex doesn't mean just tits. The song isn't about just tits either.
right
none of that changes how poor your example was, i dont know why you're still trying to come up with an angle to defend it, when you even went on the give the actual explaination why first anon was wrong afterwards anyway
The anon was talking like he wasn't aware with the song at all so I posted it in the hopes he would get it right away. It wasn't an example and I don't understand why you're being so anal about this.
>post the song in response to someone saying tits = milk
>when the song literally backs that up
thats literally all i pointed out, no one is anal here
This is the most inane argument in this thread, and this thread is full of inane arguments. The explanation is already out there so let's just leave it at that.
>argument
>'anon this song actually confirms the tits theory'
>>'yes i know, but in regards to that game it doesnt because x y and z'
>'ah'
>-end-
wow what an earth shattering argument put me in the screencap we did it reddit
That was no longer an argument. I was just declaring we need to do move on because the original anon concerned already got his explanation.
feel free to stop replying then xd
>when the song literally backs that up
No it doesn't you autistic ESL gay. Milk=woman popular with men.
Stop making up shit.
>No it doesn't you autistic ESL gay. Milk=woman popular with men.
the song never once says milk singularly at any time
also, milke = woman populaar with men in what country?
please project ESL'ness in your designated 4chan thread
>"Milkshake bringing boys to the yard"
>Milkshake is often used as a reference to the song, especially the famous line: “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.” The lyrics may accompany selfies projecting a positive self-image or sex appeal, as the milkshake is “what the guys go crazy for” in the song.
Drop the act, shitskin. You're way too blatantly ESL.
is often used as a reference to the song, especially the famous line: “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.” The lyrics may accompany selfies projecting a positive self-image or sex appeal, as the milkshake is “what the guys go crazy for” in the song.
thats exactly what i said you total brown skinned fucking retard
YOU'VE BEEN ARGUING THAT MILKSHAKE MEANS TITS, YOU GORILLA moron:
>ESL projecting ESL
tale as old as time
anon 1 said that he thought milk = tits in some game
anon 2 said no thats not true, and posted milkshake
anon 3 (me) says 'but anon 2, milkshake actually IS about tits', so you posted it but it actually supporst anon 1 more than anon 2
anon 2: ah but regarding what anon 1 said specifically about video game, x y z blah blah
anon 3 (me): ah
ESL (you): blasjdaksfdasfaknfkafmkf
just learn how to fucking read english and follow a reply chain and then you can project your pajeetness onto others with greater success
>ESL shitskin doesn't know what "milkshake bringing boys to the yard means"
>thinks it's tits
>told he's wrong, shown proof
>pretends he's still right
moron, not a single natural citizen would ever think what you did because, IT'S A SEMI REGULAR SAYING.
Nor would they be illiterate enough to keep saying "it means tits", when shown that it isn't.
You're clearly ESL, with a poor grasp of English and a shitskin pajeet subhuman moron to boot. KYS, fag.
>literally so retarded it is like hes not from this planet
i even labelled all the anons for you
anon 1 said milk = tits
anon 3 said that milkshake = sexual promiscuity, which is exactly what the song is about, and thats what anon 1 was thinking when he played his shit weeb video game
use your fucking brain and leave the 3rd world you worthless fucking moron
Oh boy, milkshakes! That's where I'm a viking!
What's the difference between yare yare daze and yare yare ne?
>daze
masculine and more assertive form of dayo, which is a casual and slightly more assertive form of tbh yo.
>ne
a sort of "right?" "isn't it?" ender that's used towards someone else for confirmation
you didn't write down what those moonrunes meant, gay
TRANSLATE THE LINE moron
Hang on he's putting it into google translate but its' hard to draw the kanji.
>Japanese text is already in the filename
>someone already explained it right after
Do you even read before posting?
People like that ruin earnest, sincere discussion about the decision making and nature of localization. It honestly makes things worse for players and localizers both in experience and understanding by exemplifying the thing midwits stereotype the role into being. A living caricature.
Mia is the last person who should be calling someone else out for how they attract men.
disgusting
A lot of translation conversation operates under the idea that the original writers work is being changed but what if they saw what was changed and actually think it's funny or don't mind that the localizations are different?
being changed separate from what the original writers want*
Doesn't matter. Writers are not the authority on wether or not a translation of their work is good.
if it doesn't matter than shouldn't the translators
be able to do whatever they want?
It has to matter to some extent or we won't even know the intention of what was written and it'll just be like one of those shitty doujin rewrites where the writer just makes up shit that they think is happening in the story..
No, I think you misunderstood me. The most important thing is the intent of the author. But I meant that in the situation when an author approves of a translation of his work in another language that is far from being faithful to his original text. His original writing is important, and even if he approves of a bad translation of his work that opinion should be ignored because it is wrong. I did not explain this well. But I think you get it.
2000's translations are so soul
What these are telling me is that the translation vastly improved the writing
I'm surprised I didn't remember this clunker of a line yikes.
Oh I get it. It’s because this is a very old flashback and their language was made specifically to be old and outdated for the funnies
>implying half the charm of AA isn't the Japanifornia and localisation aspects
eat your hamburgers
still cracks me up
i refence this all the time and it makes my wife roll her eyes
You're just a nagging gay. Yes I hated that the localization changed the country from Japan to US because it was a retarded change that was unnecessary, but some of the jokes do need to be remade to fit into english and they work well.
The worst thing about localisations, is the American boomers putting their own shitty way of talking into the game, and often completely changing the plot or characters
It's not much better than a machine translation. And honestly, sometimes it's worse. I don't know Japanese, but I don't play these games to hear or read gnomish or American phrases by old people,
>japanese character says oy vey
>brits injecting british slang
you guys should learn a bit of nip. one day you might enjoy unmolested scripts
only 20 more years of watching anime and i'll be at N4 :^)
I'm trying, dude. After around a year of working on and off I've memorized a fair bit of kanji but even the basics of grammar are beyond me. I need to freshen up on my kanakata as well. And that's just reading, I can't understand anything that's spoken.
And yes I've tried the cure dolly videos, her shitty fucking 'everything is a train' analogy is completely unhelpful and just gets more confusing the more she shoves into it.
>kanakata
Anyway, personally I think Cure Dolly's videos are only good after you've spent a while studying Japanese yourself because it helps you reconceptualize the language after you've been struggling with it for a time. I don't think it's going to help beginners since the train metaphor is for people who already know Japanese grammar rules and have been forcing them to work with English. You should just memorize characters, read grammar references like Genki and above all always keep consuming media. Make it a habit.
>Make it a habit.
yeah that's what I need to do, and I need to figure out how to put anki on my phone so I can keep up while away from my computer. I lost a shitload of progress over xmas.
>look up cure dolly
>read the first comments
>fucking died
That's just the tip of the iceberg, she was apparently the leader of a bizarre feminist cult whose beliefs involved sun goddesses and ritual spanking. Someone made a collage of a quick rundown but I don't have it saved
hopefully someone delivers because that sounds hilarious
>only good after you've spent a while studying Japanese yourself because it helps you reconceptualize the language after you've been struggling with it for a time
explain to me how only learning the language properly after learning it wrong for some time is better than learning it properly straight away. or don't because i'm not going to read your reply anyway
Struggling with learning doesn't mean you're learning wrong. You're just failing to make progress.
You don't even know English.
you didnt answer why failing to make progress is better than learning something correctly from the beginning
Because in that anon's case he was failing to make progress with the "correct" method because he had no idea what the videos were talking about. He can come back to it later if he wants to but it's not something he needs to beat himself up over for not understanding because he simply needs to get further in his studies first.
yes, child. you will read his responses.
>think Cure Dolly's videos are only good after you've spent a while studying Japanese
another anon told everyone that she is a cultist, her videos are error ridden and that you should not learn from her.
>her videos are error ridden
Could you point the errors out?
>and that you should not learn from her.
worked for me, don't know what to tell you
i never watched her videos nor i know japanese. i was just in a thread like this one and someone pointed out she had a youtube video with her real voice and that she is a wacko.
k
She's a fucking weirdo for sure but there's nothing wrong with the videos.
japanese the manga way. thank me later bro.
Easier said than done gay
>unmolested scripts
haha...
This thread is filled with weaboos who never played and will never play AA, but feel really strongl about muh translation.
>no you don't understand it's SUPPOSED to be bad!
>good localization
>"REEEEE it's bad because... IT JUST IS"
>noooo you don't understand it's a GOOD thing when translators butcher the original script because... um... IT JUST IS OKAY?
>you have a different opinion, therefore you didn't play it
Reminds me of some threads, like BotW, Bloodborne, etc.
They're bad. But TGAA actually is okay, because they couldn't "localize" it, like the old ones.
this whole thread
Very funny you gay /s
fr fr no cap bruh ong not bussin' who let him cook??
Hahaha...AHAHAHAHAHAH!! THIS!!! THISS!!!!! IT'S EPIC LOLZ!!!!
Before I even bother looking, is this another one of those threads where we just throw around the "if you don't like a bad translation that means you want an exact literal translation" strawman?
No, this is a thread where weebmoron cry about a translation for a game series they don't play or care about.
Because it infringes on their basement dwelling neetmoron cultural tourist gayry that Jap games are meant to fulfill.
A simple "yes" would have sufficed to answer my question.
I've played all of them so fuck you and you're bullshit claim you tard
The funny thing is that at this point I would actually prefer an exact translation, at least then you're guaranteed to understand SOME of what is being said instead of being completely at the mercy of some retard's fanfiction.
is there a decent free phone app that will let you scan and translate kanji?
?t=254
Why don't you use Ace Attorney to learn nip?
>learning nip... by watching someone play games in English
Uh, okay.
no you retard
if the nips are doing it, you can too
is this the Dragon I See Comeback Court thread?
yes
pls bring pasta
Hello, everyone! My name is Dragon Isee, and with my assistant Evening Village (who loves burgers and who I met after her sister, Thousandfathoms Village, was killed), I investigate crimes and defend clients as a defense attorney! My rival is the prosecutor Clever Swordedge, who I was in primary school with (together with my first client, Youknow Forsure). He was mentored by Fromhell Demon, a famous prosecutor (who is now gone, but his legacy continues with his daughter, Dark Demon).
These days I've taken proteges myself, like Surprise Lawboy and Moon Heartnoise, and adopted a daughter, Seethrough. Life is swell here in Japanifornia.
Also, I have an ancestor called Helpfuldragon Isee, who became a lawyer due to his friend Onetruth Onehundredseptendecillion. He was helped by his faithful judicial assistant Honorfeathercity Godword, the daughter of Friend Godword. There was one time she had to dress up as a boy in court, in which she took the name Dragonboy Isee. In Rondon they met famous detective Closelycuthair Hollytreehome, and his young female roommate Rainbow Sonofwalter. Together they took many cases against the famous Reaper of the Bailey, Itcantbehelped Ofthesick. They even met and defended the famous Stubborn Summereye, who coined the famous term "I love you"! Life was swell in Rondon.
Greetings, my name is Surprise Lawboy. My father was the travelling musician Surprise Musicboy and my mother was the famous magician Gentlesea Magic. As a child, I met my best friends, Blue Earth, who wanted to be an astronaut. I wanted to be a lawyer, and began training under first-rate defence attorney Hazy Dragonfang. My first trial was defending his friend, the famous attorney turned poker player Dragon Isee. During the trial, I met his daughter Seethrough Isee, who gave me a piece of evidence that led my to accuse my own boss of murder.
After that, I began to work for Mr. Isee at his office. I proceeded face off against my former boss’ rock star/ prosecutor brother, Echo Dragonfang. I also met the grumpy detective Glowingsky garden gnomeeledmoon, who had a passion for forensic science.
My boss recently hired another attorney, Moon Heartnoise. Together we’ve been battling the convict-prosecutor Swift Distortion and his partner, detective Rumbling Sentry. I can’t wait to see what adventures await us now that my boss has his attorney’s badge back
>Greetings, my name is Surprise Lawboy. My father was the travelling musician Surprise Musicboy
Deepest lore.
They are failed writers who resent the things they are working on for being "beneath them". This is not exaggeration or hyperbole, that is how they behave. They change things because they want to roleplay as "creatives" but didn't have what it takes to be actual creatives.
Every localization defender (and localizer) inevitably, without fail, ends in "the original was bad anyways".
Are these changes in the new versions of the game? These references weren't in the originals or 3ds versions. Either its an edit or I genuinely don't remember these things.
They were in the DS version of the game, at least
Yes, those screenshots of sprites at DS resolution are clearly from a new release you fucking retard.
You gaijins will never ever be Japanese.
why would I want to be
thank fuck, I don't want to be a wageslave living off an allowance from his bitchy whore wife until he eventually and inevitably offs himself.
I just want to play unpozzed vidya.
Appreciating japan as a gaijin seems better than having to be a jap and have gaijin shit up your homeland and art
Foreigners dont really do that in japan because they're strict about who they let in and what foreigners can do. Thankfully.
They're intent on remaining a majority and preserving their culture. Shame so many places in the west fell for the globalism meme and didnt realise how important that was in time
Good
Gaijins get treated well in Japan when you learn their customs
You get treated like you're special even if you're plain as day. Its nice. I call it the Gaijin treatment
>Beat Layton vs Wright today
>No good porn of Darklaw or even Espella
Probably something about the game's popularity or lack thereof
Ace Attorney in general doesn't have a lot of porn for some reason. I guess it's not degenerate enough for cumbrain zoomers.
Oh the fans are degenerate, don't worry about that. The gaytards often can't control themselves. It might have just been fujos way back when, but modern western youth treat that shit like a trend, so it's exacerbated wildly.
It's a fujo thread where the majority of the most important characters are obvious fujo bait.
Localizations do have one good thing about them, and that's the mental gymnastics the localization apologists get up to to somehow shoehorn a justification. It's funny.
To anyone learning Japanese right now. If you're learning Kanji/Kana with Anki. I recommend reading manga like Yotsuba&! & Flying Witch in Japanese, since those are easy to read for beginners (they have furigana) and are also very good.
>tomboy in feminine clothing
cute
Yes, Miura is very cute.
She and Torako are my favorite.
I personally really like Fuuka. Too cute.
What game is this
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, its by Nis, the same people who make the Disgaea games except its more serious
how come ace attorney has been given a pass all these years for what is effectively a butchered localization in 2023?
Almost everything is a pun in AA (including basically everyone's names), the series was initially made only with the Japanese market in mind and was thought impossible to localize. Hence the eventual localization being more of a rewrite.
Dragon Quest is the only other example that comes pretty close, the DQ localizations would often change many characters and locations' names, add regional accents, write numerous new jokes etc. The Japanese director approves of it though, and the fanbase actually likes it, even Ganker will defend DQ's localization to death.
So ultimately, like any other piece of media (or art) it's all in the eye of the beholder, there's no right or wrong way to do it.
Fun Fact, Plus Alpha Translations did the localization for almost all mainline DQ games, including DQ11, and they also did the entirety of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. According to their site, they worked on one and a half episode from Trials and Tribulations (I vaguely remember their website detailing that they worked on the final episode, but I'm not sure).
They also did Layton Brothers and Layton Mystery Journey. So they seem to be the go-to company in case Japanese devs want a British localization
Wrong. It's not in the eye of the beholder. There are right and wrong ways to translate. And Dragon Quest for example, is a bad way of doing it.
You're literally beholding it right now
>the fanbase actually likes it, even Ganker will defend DQ's localization to death.
I've seen plenty of people here shitting on the localization of several dragon quest games in the west. I remember back when I played DQV DS how people were telling me that wasn't the right version just because of the localization.
Because its a funny translation
What the fuck is harlem shake?
Nice picture. Very telling of the evil these "people" harbor.
Dipshit localizers abusing their roles in anime/vidya has been an issue for decades now. You're getting at least 80% of the game in equal quality, and if you want the last 20% true to the author's intention, it's easier than ever now to learn japanese.
AA has great localization though
Did the translator visit /b/ regularly back then?
Holy fuck, this is the worst thing I've ever seen on this site.
then you haven't seen the dog gore
I think, "Failing clown in a circus near to being taken over by the star actor" is being faithfully adhered to as a concept with Moe. It's not even a translation issue. He just relies primarily on dated referential humor. That's why he sucks.
The fresh prince theme song was a very prevalent meme at the time.
So, the issue is that the translator mistakenly assumed most people would view it as dated?
It aged great by aging badly. It still hits just a little too close to home if you were browsing in 2007.
>Skies of Arcadia
Damn. Does Skies of Arcadia have a fan translation?
That's indeed exactly what is written there. Definitely also no mention of hemorrhoids.
Weebs have gone through the localization of the trilogy several times now. Dated references aside, it's actually pretty faithful to all the emotional beats and language quirks of the original nip. The alt-LA premise is absolutely astounding given just how Jap the plot gets, but they still made it work. It's when modern localizers tried this approach and failed that we started getting problems.

>Why do localizers ruin games?
Not for long. Can't wait to see all the copes they come up with
Oh god yes, I can't wait for japanese devs to start using this
I love ai now
>1st case of AA4
>Grape juice is clearly just censored wine
>Except it isn't and the devs were just fucking with the fans
I love AO screencaps
Chad Apollo is the best part of these
>I was the prosecutor of that case
A highlight of my life.
I remember going on the website to see if this was still active/alive and only one server has players in it but it was danganronpa themed with a bunch of discord trannies running it. Not even being a schizo when I say that last part, their discord was linked directly to it and everyone went by they/them
The server those screencaps came from is still running, but you're not going to find it on the "main" website for it
It's still going? How old is it by now? Where can I find it?
>It's still going?
Somehow. Don't go on it much anymore, but they're still doing cases
>Where can I find it?
aovidya.pw
that's just doxxing, it has nothing on the juicy spanking cult.
Ace Attorney games are the gold standard for localizations. The original text is so dry and boring.
chud spotted
>AA online fags
literal sub-reddit ifunny and 9gag level garbage
I'm sorry you missed out, newfriend
AO is still alive anon (on weekends)
The problem is you have lines that in the Japanese script are meant to be "funny" but when translated don't even qualify as humor because the Japanese are so heavily irradiated that they laugh at the most mundane and nonsensical repetitive bullshit. So as a localizer you either translate it directly and ruin the humorous intent of the dialogue or make up your own humor and ruin the literal meaning of the dialogue. It's a lose-lose.
So saying "good grief"
in response to someone acting the mickey counts as a joke for nips?
Yes, it's like a sitcom laugh track trigger.
>every line of dialogue has to be heckin deadass funny af, just like my favourite content creators.
then just let it be not funny. do localizers surgically insert humour into German text as well?
Personally I prefer when they do literal translations and put a little TL note. I know it's not viable for games but it's a fun way of learning their culture without needing to sacrifice the intent. The Toradora light novel preserved all the cultural jokes and just put little notes like "this is a reference to this tv show" or "it's a pun where the word CHING means CHONG which can be read as CHANG".
If you think japanese is "bland" then you don't know enough japanese and you're still converting it into english in your head literally.
You might not be aware of this because you are a retarded surface level weeb but Japanese games are full of memes and references, so what would you prefer?
The translators naming a stupid Japanese dance nobody knows?
Or would you prefer he just says he has hemorrhoids and complain the translation leaves half of the text out?
Okay, so replace memes and references with memes and references.
But do not replace "dry" or "bland" or whatever the fuck underage twittermoron cope word dialogue with memes.
>The translators naming a stupid Japanese dance nobody knows?
They would unironically be okay with it. Yes, not understanding something is better than the other way around for them.
Reminder to get up often and stretch, walk around the house a bit too, so you can avoid hemorrhoids.
too late, i am grossberg
Three games of Ace Attorney hijinks and that's where you decide to be embarrassed?
>cultural references are... LE BAD!
no.
>cultural references are bad
Yes.
When this part happened during my playthrough I just chuckled and said “really? What the fuck” and then kept going and forgot about it like 20 seconds later. Why can’t you do this?
>noooo you can't care about some things more than me everyone has to care about everything exactly the same amount and have the exact same opinion!
why are zoomers like this?
It’s just a silly joke that lasts like 2 seconds. It’s not like these games are known for 10/10 writing but they are still fun
>just a silly joke
haha i get that reference, so silly XD
Literally what is wrong with “I get that reference” type jokes? I personally feel fluttery inside and smile when I do in fact get that fucking reference
so does a million other people but they don't feel the need to vocalize it because it's nothing to be proud of
When this thread happened during my browsing I just chuckled and said "really? What the fuck" and then kept going and forgot about it like 20 seconds later. Why can't you do this?
>I personally feel fluttery inside and smile when I do in fact get that fucking reference
Inoperable.
>being le contrarian about the Ace Attorney localizations now
This. I hate localizers being retarded, but I thought everyone already accepted that AA had retarded localization. I mean that one image with the burger meme has been around for ages.
>but I thought everyone already accepted that AA had retarded localization
apparently not judging by all the cocksucking it gets on this very thread
>Harlem Shake
It's interesting that in the literary world redoing translations in order to be more faithful to the originals is a super common business but this does not exist in video games.
I think there's a good business opportunity here. A company that specializes in fixing translations, removing all creative input from the old translator and trying to make the thing sound as faithful as possible to the original, but now in another language. This is an art that has been perfected for centuries by mankind in a medium whose writing is much more complex, so it's not as if it's impossible.
The big problem is distribution, though. Nobody is going to want to buy a game twice because of two different translations, so the business of this company would be to sell DLCs perhaps? You buy a game and you can buy later a DLC that adds the translation done by someone who has some commitment to the arts and humanity and not by some unqualified and probably perverted autist.
Literally me in the center wearing the red jacket and comparing my hemorrhoids to the Harlem Shake
Anyone remember Phoenix Wrong
