It's irrelevant because they are seen anyways.

i don't, they're taken however they are, because that's the nature of online discussion.
why are you even attempting to undermine my opinions by calling this and my posts' merit into question?
              Rat in a corner mentality

You make a fair point, but, ultimately, I'm just voicing an opinion that I know will make you guys mad.
I rally didn't choose for Ganker's catalog to be 70% outrage garbage at every hour of the day with 20% being coomer threads and the rest of the 10% of actual bidya discussion being about recent games that I, sometimes, don't play with only a couple of threads once in a while pertaining to my interest. So the rest of the time I entertain myself in the daily autist diaper shitting threads, putting oil on the fire.
Not happy about it? Well maybe stop chasing outrage with such fervor and talk and make the board talk about things that people actually enjoy.

            Or simply "oh please ...."

It's yare yare ne. It's a very common exasperation so it's often translated like "Good grief..." In that part, she's watching as Dahlia wraps Payne and the Judge around her finger with pleasantries, so a normal inoffensive translation would be "This is going to be a long trial..."

            [...]
He's just saying his butt (i.e. his hemmorhoids) are acting up hard since Phoenix just directly implicated himself in the murder. Literally "My butt's acting violently! It's acting violently!" or more naturally "Oh, my hemorrhoids! The pain!"

            Yeah or that.

So the og dialogue was boring, charactereless shit, while the localisation kept the same meaning but gave it personality?

No. It's just the sexual prowess part or more simply her female charm, in which Dahlia is completely overpowering Mia since she has the court eating out of the palm out of her hand. It has nothing to do with Mia's breasts in that context.

People like that ruin earnest, sincere discussion about the decision making and nature of localization. It honestly makes things worse for players and localizers both in experience and understanding by exemplifying the thing midwits stereotype the role into being. A living caricature.

A lot of translation conversation operates under the idea that the original writers work is being changed but what if they saw what was changed and actually think it's funny or don't mind that the localizations are different?

Doesn't matter. Writers are not the authority on wether or not a translation of their work is good.

if it doesn't matter than shouldn't the translators
be able to do whatever they want?

It has to matter to some extent or we won't even know the intention of what was written and it'll just be like one of those shitty doujin rewrites where the writer just makes up shit that they think is happening in the story..

              Anonymous

No, I think you misunderstood me. The most important thing is the intent of the author. But I meant that in the situation when an author approves of a translation of his work in another language that is far from being faithful to his original text. His original writing is important, and even if he approves of a bad translation of his work that opinion should be ignored because it is wrong. I did not explain this well. But I think you get it.

The worst thing about localisations, is the American boomers putting their own shitty way of talking into the game, and often completely changing the plot or characters

It's not much better than a machine translation. And honestly, sometimes it's worse. I don't know Japanese, but I don't play these games to hear or read israeli or American phrases by old people,

I'm trying, dude. After around a year of working on and off I've memorized a fair bit of kanji but even the basics of grammar are beyond me. I need to freshen up on my kanakata as well. And that's just reading, I can't understand anything that's spoken.

And yes I've tried the cure dolly videos, her shitty fricking 'everything is a train' analogy is completely unhelpful and just gets more confusing the more she shoves into it.

        >kanakata
Anyway, personally I think Cure Dolly's videos are only good after you've spent a while studying Japanese yourself because it helps you reconceptualize the language after you've been struggling with it for a time. I don't think it's going to help beginners since the train metaphor is for people who already know Japanese grammar rules and have been forcing them to work with English. You should just memorize characters, read grammar references like Genki and above all always keep consuming media. Make it a habit.

My name is Dragon Isee, and with my assistant Evening Village (who loves burgers and who I met after her sister, Thousandfathoms Village, was killed), I investigate crimes and defend clients as a defense attorney! My rival is the prosecutor Clever Swordedge, who I was in primary school with (together with my first client, Youknow Forsure). He was mentored by Fromhell Demon, a famous prosecutor (who is now gone, but his legacy continues with his daughter, Dark Demon).

These days I've taken proteges myself, like Surprise Lawboy and Moon Heartnoise, and adopted a daughter, Seethrough. Life is swell here in Japanifornia.

Also, I have an ancestor called Helpfuldragon Isee, who became a lawyer due to his friend Onetruth Onehundredseptendecillion. He was helped by his faithful judicial assistant Honorfeathercity Godword, the daughter of Friend Godword. There was one time she had to dress up as a boy in court, in which she took the name Dragonboy Isee. In Rondon they met famous detective Closelycuthair Hollytreehome, and his young female roommate Rainbow Sonofwalter. Together they took many cases against the famous Reaper of the Bailey, Itcantbehelped Ofthesick. They even met and defended the famous Stubborn Summereye, who coined the famous term "I love you"! Greetings, my name is Surprise Lawboy. My father was the travelling musician Surprise Musicboy and my mother was the famous magician Gentlesea Magic. As a child, I met my best friends, Blue Earth, who wanted to be an astronaut. I wanted to be a lawyer, and began training under first-rate defence attorney Hazy Dragonfang. My first trial was defending his friend, the famous attorney turned poker player Dragon Isee. During the trial, I met his daughter Seethrough Isee, who gave me a piece of evidence that led my to accuse my own boss of murder.

After that, I began to work for Mr. Isee at his office. I proceeded face off against my former boss’ rock star/ prosecutor brother, Echo Dragonfang. I also met the grumpy detective Glowingsky israeliteeledmoon, who had a passion for forensic science.

My boss recently hired another attorney, Moon Heartnoise. Together we’ve been battling the convict-prosecutor Swift Distortion and his partner, detective Rumbling Sentry. I can’t wait to see what adventures await us now that my boss has his attorney’s badge back

They are failed writers who resent the things they are working on for being "beneath them". This is not exaggeration or hyperbole, that is how they behave. They change things because they want to roleplay as "creatives" but didn't have what it takes to be actual creatives.

Almost everything is a pun in AA (including basically everyone's names), the series was initially made only with the Japanese market in mind and was thought impossible to localize. Hence the eventual localization being more of a rewrite.

Dragon Quest is the only other example that comes pretty close, the DQ localizations would often change many characters and locations' names, add regional accents, write numerous new jokes etc. The Japanese director approves of it though, and the fanbase actually likes it, even Ganker will defend DQ's localization to death.

So ultimately, like any other piece of media (or art) it's all in the eye of the beholder, there's no right or wrong way to do it.

        Anonymous

Fun Fact, Plus Alpha Translations did the localization for almost all mainline DQ games, including DQ11, and they also did the entirety of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. According to their site, they worked on one and a half episode from Trials and Tribulations (I vaguely remember their website detailing that they worked on the final episode, but I'm not sure).
They also did Layton Brothers and Layton Mystery Journey. So they seem to be the go-to company in case Japanese devs want a British localization

        Anonymous

Wrong. It's not in the eye of the beholder. There are right and wrong ways to translate. And Dragon Quest for example, is a bad way of doing it.

Dipshit localizers abusing their roles in anime/vidya has been an issue for decades now. You're getting at least 80% of the game in equal quality, and if you want the last 20% true to the author's intention, it's easier than ever now to learn japanese.

Weebs have gone through the localization of the trilogy several times now. Dated references aside, it's actually pretty faithful to all the emotional beats and language quirks of the original nip. The alt-LA premise is absolutely astounding given just how Jap the plot gets, but they still made it work. It's when modern localizers tried this approach and failed that we started getting problems.

The problem is you have lines that in the Japanese script are meant to be "funny" but when translated don't even qualify as humor because the Japanese are so heavily irradiated that they laugh at the most mundane and nonsensical repetitive bullshit. So as a localizer you either translate it directly and ruin the humorous intent of the dialogue or make up your own humor and ruin the literal meaning of the dialogue. It's a lose-lose.

Personally I prefer when they do literal translations and put a little TL note. I know it's not viable for games but it's a fun way of learning their culture without needing to sacrifice the intent. The Toradora light novel preserved all the cultural jokes and just put little notes like "this is a reference to this tv show" or "it's a pun where the word CHING means CHONG which can be read as CHANG".

It's interesting that in the literary world redoing translations in order to be more faithful to the originals is a super common business but this does not exist in video games.
I think there's a good business opportunity here. A company that specializes in fixing translations, removing all creative input from the old translator and trying to make the thing sound as faithful as possible to the original, but now in another language. This is an art that has been perfected for centuries by mankind in a medium whose writing is much more complex, so it's not as if it's impossible.
The big problem is distribution, though. Nobody is going to want to buy a game twice because of two different translations, so the business of this company would be to sell DLCs perhaps? You buy a game and you can buy later a DLC that adds the translation done by someone who has some commitment to the arts and humanity and not by some unqualified and probably perverted autist.
