Why do people like roguelikes?

You don't get better, you just get lucky. Playing well can be unjustly punished, playing poorly can be unjustly rewarded. Any kind of skill or game knowledge you do get over time is mostly nebulous in comparison to whether or not the game will let you progress or not.

Does it just appeal to the same kind of synapse as a gambling addiction?
Does it appeal to some sense of fake difficulty, where even if you play perfectly you can still lose, which makes the game seem more difficult than it is?

I can't make sense of it.

Stop playing rougelites and start playing actual rougelikes and you won't have this problem

Because if done well, there is significantly more gameplay and skill progression than the alternative.
If its done badly, then its just a slog until you hit a enemy that instantkills you because you gotten careless as you cut trough the game without effort, and you reset.

They're one of the few genres that try to have chalenging gameplay, and also cut down on memorization being a viable way to make progress. Instead you need to get more familiar with the game and mechanics as a whole.

Plus they're fun and have variety in build choice and what you run into, making them fun to replay.

      Random =/= Challenging

Noita is one of the worst examples you could have used. It's a fun game but runs are almost entirely decided by what spells you get. If you don't get a chainsaw or laser cutter early on, or if you don't get some randomly-generated combination of lightning+lightning immunity or nuke+explosion immunity then you're not going to be able to kill anything in the second half.

You can make it to the Vault easy enough without even fighting enemies, at which point you can just snag a random wand later and be as geared up as anything else.

    >You don't get better, you just get lucky.

This is simply untrue, while its true the very nature of a randomizer roguelike means sometimes you WILL just get fricked, most of the time you get better at assessing risks and making better plays that can snowball the more consistent you get at it. This is because the game isn't TRUE random, some things will stay the same to a certain extent and that's all you need to establish yourself and survive the less consistent content.

WoH is a bad example of this though. There is very little to no good luck that can happen to you in WoH.

Literally every event in the game is dice rolls. You can come close to maxing out every stat and still fail almost everything. You can leave every stat as low as possible and still succeed at almost everything. The only time stats matter outside of dice rolls are in combat.

actually the only stat that matters is the one that your weapon uses. none of the other stats matter. this is assuming you aren't playing as the yakuza guy who can just spam kicks which don't need any stat

Incorrect. Every stat except perception matters for the static lighthouse checks.
Also Strength matter for Brace, which is extremely important for combat, and Agility for Dodge.

How often does it happen to you to pass checks with low stats? I feel like even with 8+ in a stat I still fail 90%+ of the checks.

It's a coin flip. I barely even look at my stats because it just feels like a 50/50 no matter what they are.

    >have eleven dexterity
    >fail two dexterity checks in a row because the game randomly rolled a 12
    >game over, lose an hour of progress because these games hate being able to save the game too
I don't get why people like this shit either.

autistic like to do same things over and over amd rougelikes have enough simmiliarity to tap into that but still have variety where they dont get bored

like playing pokemon and then just catching different teams of them or playing through souls games with different weapon

Last update was in December 2021 and cucks are still defending that homosexual. Holy shit just say you have a lot to deal with IRL and you can't push out updates or something and it would be fine but that fricking homosexual goes radio silent for a year or so every time and gays still defend this.

He's probably gonna reappear before December 31st, shit an update, then go back into his cave for a year. He did that last year, pretty sure he's gonna do it again.

I joined the discord last week to ask about modding the game. Turns out he's not even developing the game; he's just asking modders if he can use their content from now on. The suicide forum mystery and the shotgun girl player character were made by somebody else and now all mods need to have your contact information so he can ask you for permission to use your shit.

It's less that players like it and more that it's just an easy way for developers to shit out a game with as little effort as possible.

You don't need to balance anything. It's all random.
You don't need to plan a progression system. It's all random.
You don't need to come up with an escalating series of challenges for a player with an escalating power level. It's all random.

Because it takes so little effort to make, it's easier for devs to put all their focus into pretty graphics or gimmicky gameplay, which appeals to the lowest common denominator more than any actual gameplay would.
The randomness, while almost entirely detrimental, basically helps to obfuscate how poor the actual gameplay is.

roguelikes are masturbatory trash for people with computers too shitty to handle real games that have actual stories and or multiplayer
