Why do people like this game so much?

It's really good for a Game Boy game, and the story is quite interesting. However, in terms of actual gameplay, I found it inferior to every other 2D Zelda I've played. What's the deal with this game?

    The gameplay is great though.

I never said anything about item switching. It's ultimately a problem caused by Game Boy's lack of buttons, so I don't even think it's fair to argue against the game for it.

My real problem is the general lack of freedom in the game. The only combat option you have for most of the game is the sword. You have to do dungeons and get items in a very specific order. You don't get to access most of the overworld in the beginning of the game. Stuff like that.
I feel like this game would be better if it tried to follow the formula of the original Zelda.

Just replay the original Zelda then. I personally don't care about doing things out of order and having to bomb random shit, so ALttP and LA are more to my taste.
There's a problem I have discussing Zelda games: everyone criticize the series for being formulaic, yet everyone have their own formula in thei heads that they would like the series to stick with. Same with the 3D games, people have been complaining for 15 years that they were too linear, and now that they're open world people are complaining that they not how they used to be.
Nobody force you to play and like every Zelda game, just judge the games on their own merits.

I actually love ALttP. It is did some things worse than the original, but overall I think it's a better game.
However, LA tried too hard to copy ALttP's formula, but failed in doing so.
          Some of ALttP's strengths are:
          1. The vast amount of items available to the player (which gives the player a lot of options in combat)
          2. Creative dungeon design. The fact that the dungeons have multiple levels adds a lot to them.
          3. Exploration doesn't play as huge of a role as it does in the original, but it's still required to beat the game.

Even though LA tried to copy ALttP, it didn't copy any of these things. For some of them, the reason for it is hardware limitations, but then why did they try to replicate ALttP's formula on hardware where it isn't possible? This is why I think it would be better if LA tried doing something simpler by following the original's formula.

          >Same with the 3D games, people have been complaining for 15 years that they were too linear, and now that they're open world people are complaining that they not how they used to be.
          Wait, someone actually says that?

It's disingenuous to compare a handheld game to a console game. Especially when it's not a port. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a nice bite-sized handheld adventure. The game succeeds in everything it tries to do, and isn't laden down with extraneous nonsense.

I want to hear actual arguments in favor of this game though. People say this game is really good (some say it's the best Zelda game). I want to know why people think that.

What? It basically plays like most 2D Zelda, and the gameplay is great compared to the NES games. That's very impressive considering how poor the OG Game Boy hardware was

I really like the gameplay, where you get to equip 2 items and those items can have unique properties when combined. would kill for another game in the franchise that did that again.

i think there were only 2 or 3 item combos that did that but it was pretty cool, they should have embellished on that for all items or almost all

Wait, are there any combos besides pegasus boots + sword and pegasus boots + feather?

Also, in one of the versions of ALttP there was a glitch that allowed you to use pegasus boots and items at the same time, which lead to some interesting effects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgBokTdUEsA
Would've been cool if something like that was implemented as an intended feature.

Anons just need to stop responding to the laziest ragebait possible so gen Z is deprived of their precious dopamine hits. Maybe then they'll learn how to engage in proper conversation.

I like it because it's the first game in the series to feel whimsical, and feels a little bit more dynamic than it's predecessors. There's way more to do in the overworld and way more context for what you're doing. Also the dungeons are unironically great, I prefer them to ALttP

      >feels a little bit more dynamic than it's predecessors
What does that even supposed to mean?

      >There's way more to do in the overworld
More than in what game? Maybe more than the original Zelda, but definitely less than ALttP.
ALttP's overworld was full of caves secret areas that you could access using specific items or by warping there from the dark world.
LA barely has any of that. Also, LA's overworld is very restrictive because for some reason the devs wanted to force you to do the main story if you wanted to explore the world. Not that there is much to explore anyway...

        >What does that even supposed to mean?
Sequences like going and saving the pup from the moblin cave, then using him to eat obstacles and get to the dungeon. Or the ghost that stalks you and you take him to his old house and then his grave. Or characters that have small arcs like Marin and the Animal Village. Stuff happens in the overworld. Exploration in ALttP is better but I really love stuff like I mentioned. I'm not really driven to do stuff in ALttP because I don't feel engaged in the world in the same way

That's actually a very interesting point. I've kind of gotten used to the fact that stuff like that doesn't really happen in Zelda games, so maybe I just didn't appreciate it when it happened in LA.

this is also why i love LA, and the same reason why i love the Oracles. lttp is a great game but the world feels very bleak and dead and the colors of the whole game are so drab

Because it's a sequel to what many considered then and many still do to his day, not only the best Zelda game but the best game of all time. It was a good sequel on much inferior hardware. It didn't feel like a portable game. It felt like a full fledged console game more than any other Game Boy game at the time. It's not perfect or even close to being as good as LttP, but it's way better than it has a right to be.

I agree, but for some reason I see a lot of people who for some reason think LA is one of the best Zelda games and I have no idea why:

Because the series as a whole is extremely high quality and people like different things about it.
