      - Greirat is awesome and possibly the best FROM quest but way too easy to frick up, as seen below
      - Siegward/Patches is badly done and extremely finicky, relying on progressing 3 different quests at the same time and that fricking well being interactable only after you already tried ages ago
      - Hawkwood is pretty cool and straightforward
      - Yoel is absolute bullshit, he dies almost immediatly and before most people can level up 5 times
      - Yuria is pretty straightforward, assuming...
      - ...Anri is never told where his friend is. This quest is great becaus it has many different paths, but it's fricked up that it can ruin the Yuria quest.
      - Leonhard is awful. Most people don't ever even see him in Firelink, and then it's a succession of vague bullshit and random talks, returning to Rosaria for no reason, etc.
      - Sirris has to be the worst. Simply talking to Rosaria first ruins this. Then you have to find a random summon sign in a spot you have no reason to ever be. And then buy and read a completely random item that is identical to other items, but at least I guess you have a clue this time.
      - Orbeck is great, but it is crazy bullshit that he just disappears without a word if you just progress.
      - Lapp : pretty ok and straightforward, I think

I don't really take screenshots of egregiously ugly graphics that often, but pic related is a good example of one of the main problems, the super shit lighting.

The entire area is filled with lava, there's glowing lava flowing down the face of the cliffs and so on. Why is the wall pitch black with literally no light? Why are parts of my character's back completely pitch black as well, especially when the ground is lit and I'm clearly not standing in a dark spot? There is no reason for this and it looks extremely shitty. It's not like I need maximum RTX super graphics but holy frick, at least apply some ambient lighting to the area or some shit. There are light sources everywhere, in every direction, the entire place should be bathed in a slight, orange-reddish glow and the character as well as parts of the environment shouldn't be pitch black and completely unilluminated.

There are a lot more horrible lighting frickups like this, but this one is particularly egregious since the entire area is a turd.

Reminder Miyazaki himself stated that he wasn't happy with Dark Souls 1

          >Miyazaki shares an interesting comment regarding Anor Londo. While many players have their breath taken away the first time the gargoyles land them in this area and they take in the grandiose sight of this amazing level, Miyazaki doesn’t feel that first moment resonates throughout the zone.

          >“I like when you first enter Anor Londo, but unfortunately the impact and excitement felt when you first enter Anor Londo didn’t last through the whole gameplay experience, so this is more of a regret in the design.”

          >Since I had the opportunity, I had to ask what Miyazaki’s least favorite zone from the franchise is as well. The answer should come as no surprise to fans of the series – it’s the lava/dinosaur nightmare known as Lost Izalith in Dark Souls. Miyazaki comments “Don’t want to elaborate on this very much. There was a different person assigned to this area, and although I was involved, I don’t want to pose very many negative comments for his sake. It can be a learning experience for all of us.”

          >“All of Dark Souls 3’s design is basically based on my own personal preference,” he declares when I ask him about the difference between Dark Souls 3 and the previous two titles in the series. That speaks to Miyazaki’s role as an auteur, too, in an age when games driven by one central, publicly visible figure seem to be less frequent. That, I suppose, is why Miyazaki looks so at home watching over this Souls event from above – this really is his baby.

Dark Souls ages even more poorly when you see all the shit they ripped off. Like the opening up doors ambush in Boletaria palace getting moved to the lower undead burg, the identical enemies, the undead soldiers and warriors that have identical scripting to Dreglings and Boletarian soldiers, and so on. So many similarities pile up

                >Vast and more intricate levels with great sense of scale and design were replaced by half assed lame and small "interconnected" levels constantly using tubular design and danger from falling/limiting player movement
                >The world feels artificial because Lordran is ridiculously small, constrained into its open world design. Boletaria feels like an actual kingdom.
                >Homeward bones break the gameplay by allowing an easy and cheap get-out-of-jail move
                >Asylum Demon - Get a face full of ass 3x because they just copy paste it twice later on
                >Taurus Demon - Somehow has more intricate attack animations than any other boss, wasted on shitty arena

                >Quelaag - Make frickhuge arena for co-op kino, turns out the solution is to get in close after all. ZZzzzzzz...
                >Iron Golem - Worse version of tower knight from demon's souls
                >O & S - Most epic fight of the whole game forces you to backpedal for 90% of it

the PC port filtered me 10 or so years ago. the first boss was easy, but I rage quit right after due to getting killed when trying to rush to my body after being punished for trying to explore a bit (I think some guy in a gold armor wrecked my shit, or maybe it were skeleton archers). was the port really as shit as they say and I should try again with a mod fixing the controls and an xbox pad instead of M&K this time, or am I just too shit at this game? I always loved the aesthetics and missing out on this franchise feels kinda bad

There are bad areas but in the areas it looks good it's down to good art direction and creativity with the tools the devs had at the time. You see it a lot in older games where they manage to punch well above their weight purely on art direction alone. Unlike today where everything is about graphical fidelity above all else, art style be damned.

its just mind boggling how its possible to downgrade the graphics somehow. like why change it then? why not just update the textures but keep the obviously superior lighting intact?

You get very little souls for killing stuff (including bosses) so level ups are slower, enemy item drop rates are severly cucked (no more free titanite making souls even more scarce). Increased aggro range can also make certain segments harder (bomb throwers on the roof near that tiny bridge in undead burg will jump down to chase you, Havel will stare you down as soon as you open door to tower from darkroot basin instead of waiting around the corner). Apparently there are also some OP things but I didn't check that out yet

                >Game runs in 1024x720, actually.

Dark Souls couldn't even manage true full widescreen at 720p on gen 7 consoles, From had to render gameplay at a skinnier internal resolution and THEN stretch it out to 16:9 (though Demon's Souls did run at full proper 720p IIRC).

PTDE is an old ass Japanese port of a 360 game that used GFWL, and then later had a generic Steamworks conversion program slapped onto it when GFWL shut down, and then that bandaid stopped working too as Windows and Steam keep going through iterations and change over the years.

Amusingly, the Switch version absolutely trashes the 360/PS3 versions of PTDE graphically, since it runs at 1080p30 with far fewer framedips (and with a simple mod it can run at 720p60, albeit with dips like the Pro/X 60fps patches for DS3 and Sekiro). Too bad about that sound quality.

              >natural to the human eye
there are two human eyes, side by side so we have a wider cone of vision. frick you mean wide screen doesn't makes sense?

                Anonymous

with a widescreen, you have to look left and right to get the full picture with all the details. Our eyes do not have color cones and rods towards the edges, only in the middle, we only see color towards the edges because our brains fill it in with assumptions. A 4:3 screen is still wider than tall, and is a more effective use of our field of vision.

                Anonymous

                >Our eyes do not have color cones and rods towards the edges, only in the middle, we only see color towards the edges because our brains fill it in with assumptions
isnt it the opposite? the middle is where the optic nerve is, it's technically a blind spot, all the rods and cones are around the edge

                Anonymous

the blindspot is in the upper right of our vision if I remember correctly, because the optic nerve passes through there and our brains fill in that gap, too. But you can only truly see color towards the middle, like I said. However, the edges of our vision are better at picking up slight differences between light and dark, presumably an adaptation to help us see things trying to sneak around on the edges of our vision.

It is. Problem is like 1000 people worldwide actually played the game because they wanted to, which is why no one cared about the following games being trash.

    Hi FromDrones,

I 100% completed Elden Ring, and now I want to play Dark Souls 1 for the first time. Is the remastered version on the Switch decent? I want to play it in handheld mode.
