Developers are forced to add Hero/Operator systems by upper management to sell skins and other micro-transactions to the player.

The more subtle reason is to redefine what you consider a hero.

if covidshit taught me anything, it's to never dismiss schizos.
        please enlighten me.

Nothing schizo about it. Just basic literacy. They start off with some heroes, add in colorful women and trans and obnoxious people of color slowly. And then dilute it even further adding more shitty colorful heroes that aren’t necessary. Military shooters that used to be about the everyman have become the worst offenders.

What's the difference between Heroes and Classes of old?

          Anonymous

In older games, there would be like 5 classes. The classes would be customizable, but with limits. The Heavy guy could bring a few different rocket launchers, or a couple machineguns, or like a fricking mortar or something. It had a role to play, but it had flexibility in that role.

In the new versions, instead there are like 20 'operators' and they each have a rigid loadout that does not change. You can get a different cosmetic skin, but you can't change your weapons.

You could not customize classes in Battlefield 1942 or Team Fortress Classic.

aside from styling each character more like an individual than a member of a class (which admittedly some class games like TF2 also do), I think they're distinguished by sheer count. the roster of a hero game will have a lot more "classes" than a typical class game, so many so that it begins to look like they're just creating classes for the sake of it and using the abundance of classes as a substitute for depth (in my opinion)

There was a game once, called Warcraft 3.
It was a simple RTS game with a twist - besides standard units, you would also have big powerful commanders who would level and get special abilities.
Some one liked this so much, they took some inspiration from an older mod and created a custom map built around fighting using just the heroes - DoTA.
Then some time passed and some moron decided that it would be a really good idea to take these abilities and put it an FPS game.
The name of that game? War3 mod for Counter-Strike 1.6, this shit is older than most posters on this fricking website

A "Hero" will have a distinct and pronounced personality, special abilities not tied to a specific usable item like a gadget or a weapon and the loadout they do have will be fixed.

classes used to be more like an actual role instead of an individual character
also they weren't as rigid, usually they were more customizable

You don't pick a loadout, you pick Mark, who has a shotgun, revolver, grenade and like a shield or something. This is unchangeable, and if you want to use an SMG you can pick Steve instead, who has entirely different equipment/stats.

    What’s wrong with hero/operator systems?
Compared to some generic mook wielding a gun, it at least gives your character a bit of personality

No developer is willing to make a good formula for that FPS subgenre. There has been enough failures now that people are turned off the moment a new hero shooter is announced.
