Saki from Sin & Punishment is my #1 first party want. Long shot would be the Elite Beat Agents / Ouendan Squad. If they go the nostalgia route again Mach Rider or Balloon Fighter could be something they pick.
My point is, we don't need any more Pokemon or FE characters. If you count Pokemon Trainer as 3 seperate characters it actually outnumbers the FE reps (and ties them if not). But it doesn't matter, you'll get the cat and nothing else.

You say that, but TPC is extremely aversive to actually depicting Pokemon fighting each other in a way as physical as Smash, and are probably attributing Pokken flopping to that exact factor.

The vast majority of the game's combat takes place in and is designed around the 2d phase anyways. Removing the 3d phase would just make the game less deep and give it less a neutral emphasis, since the PSP mechanic and phase shifting means that you're given frequent returns to neutral, and you have an incentive to change up your combo composition and make risk-vs reward choices so your combos end right on the shift for optimal damage, OR you use combos that delay the shift to keep the enemy in pressure longer as a sort of reset or to keep them in pressure; or to use combos that cause shifts earlier if you wanna break out of pressure or to get the meter/regen causing a shift brings.
The game has simple inputs and does a bunch of other things to make itself more approachable, if that's too much for you then that's a (you) problem

Genuinely, it's because the new Smash Pokemon is picked a while before its corresponding game comes out. Which means that there'd be a small pool of starters and shillmons to choose from.
it's weird how little confidence they have in non-starter reps. getting into smash is a guaranteed popularity boost, they could pretty much be using it to create extremely profitable shillmons with zero effort
Remove everyone but Pokemon Trainer, Pikachu and maybe Mewtwo, the other Pokemon selections have been dog shit.
Sakurai likes taking free reign and if he can imagine a moveset and a playstyle, that's more important than Dex seniority.
Even then, he's only allowed to pick from what GF/TPC offer him, which as far as track record shows after Lucario's ascended shilling it's ALWAYS whatever the most recent trio of starters is.

BOTW was guaranteed to get a character in smash if it had a side character or villain like Midna, Girahim or Skull Kid. But it was the first 3D Zelda to not have any character like that, the champions were the closest to that, but they weren't that relevant.
