Everytime I go to game on the steam store and I scroll down, I always notice the developers linking their own discord server in the game store.
It isn't just discord for the most part but it is the most noticeable thing, there is also occasionally twitter and reddit but this app seems to get used the most for some reason.

Not him, but I started with private /tg/ servers where I got invited to other /tg/ servers and then we started playing vydia together. I'm currently in a server with five other people and we play Don't Starve Together two or three times a week, at the moment. I also made a couple of friends on a programming server and we play Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop once every blue moon or so.
Not all that true. I usually steer cleer from public servers because mods are power-tripping b***hes and get assblasted when I don't like the things they like (e.g. I got banned from a server for saying D&D5E is too restrictive and that Hellsing is for 13 y/o). But I still make new friends if they are not too crazy.

Due to being private and unindexed if any significant conversation or information is found in a server it pretty much is forgotten unless one individual takes their time to collect the information and write a guide on it. For larger games this isn't as much of an issue since you have a bunch of wiki autists writing the info down. But for smaller games it makes finding info incredibly difficult.

i use it for communication during in uni programming projects since all of the zoomers use it and it is easier to just use the same thing 2/3 of the project group are already using. They are online 24/7 but if we were to use some other platform they would only check it once a day at best, once a week at worst. Plus it shows when the frickers are online and playing some garbage game instead of working so i can tell them to actually do their shit and push it in the version control

my friends had a mumble server years ago, they gradually switched over to discord because the process of setting up mumble and connecting to a server confused their friends who didn't even know what an IP address is. i followed in the end because i still want to talk to my buddies, but i still miss mumble a lot. it was so much better at being a VoIP client, it's ridiculous.

In the old days we didn't just hit a big quick play button to join a game. We had to manually look at a list of privately run servers, find out everyone there is being chill and casual and knows each other, treating the server like a chat room to chill in. So you'd hang out there, save the server name, look it up again, become a regular, get to know people there, get invited to their server group's forum, have it be your main place to hang out online. The concept of social media hasn't become a thing yet. Facebook is has only recently stopped being college only. People still remember having a myspace. You recognize all the names on the small forum, you recognize most of the regulars in the server. You post your application to be a forum mod or server admin or both. You become one of the global forum moderators. You go to a couple meetups with your friends from the group. Everything's great.
Then the top 2 admins and the guy who started the group have a schism and split the group up with a lot of drama but it changes everything. And then less than a year later an update from valve changes how servers are found and searched so yours starts to die pretty quick and everyone in the group just kind of drifts apart.

Discord search is complete and total ass in my experience. 75% of the time I click a result in the search it doesn't even bring me to the relevant part of the conversation, the majority of the results are bullshit chatter due to the nature of the app, has poor support for search operators, the results display is too small to display enough at a time or enough context, etc.

Somebody asked a question somewhere and somewhen for those archived answers and a Discord server going up in smoke one day is no different from a forum admin having a sudden autism fit and wiping or deleting the forum. Look up "subject discord", join it on a throwaway account or no account in-browser, find your answer, leave the server. Not hard, not even worse than skimming forums or fighting with search engines to even get them looking in the right places.
Discord replaced the programs that came before it like ventrilo and so forth. These programs have always existed and have always been widely used, each time a new one comes out people slowly migrate to it. IRC was pretty big back in the day, I bet you'd cry about that because it kept people from posting on forums.

Silently transferred server ownership to one and left after a couple years of basically no contact (I tried to organize and invite for games at first but it just never worked out, "don't feel like playing x" -> play x with each other).

And its barely any easier to use than irc which was already easy to use but minimal design keeps away normalgays because they are scared of anything without 1,000,000 corporate logos on it, they actually think if the exact same product that works the exact same way but it has a corporate logo on it then its more trustworthy. The biggest reason is that you literally do not have to pay to host your own server, that's it. Zoomers are too stupid to spend 5 minutes port forwarding and making ventrillo or teamspeak or mumble servers which you self host and have full controll over. People also use it because you can post persistent text and and inline images, which is terrible from a security perspective because it's all centralized, but great for people who enjoy waking up every morning and reading what they missed. I will fully admit the screen sharing is great on it and I've had 0 issues and latency problems using it, it just werks. For whatever reason other screen sharing programs sucks major ass

Besides my servers are the one with my 3 best friends and me to chat all day, the one I use to play age of empires 2 with my dad and brother, and the now empty one I made for the DnD games I run but since that ended I just use it for troubleshooting and shit.

When the discord troony meme started going around some dumb kids on Ganker didn't know what it meant and formed this idea in their heads about Discord being some kind of place like tumblr or reddit with its own identity. But it's just a goddamn client. It's like thinking the call app on your phone was the same as twitter.
They don't even know what discord is. It's just this foreign thing in their heads they're afraid to look at. But it's just a chat client that managed to be better than every other chat client. It's good enough that people use it for business even though it was marketed to gamers and the loading bar has bad memes in it.

I think they're rarer than people think, no one ever is right when they call them out, and it's usually more or less just 2 or 3 together in the raid so you can hardly call it one.
