Because everything else they make is basically just "remember Dark Souls?"

DaS, DeS, and BB are very apparently the only times Miyazaki was actually passionate about making a game. And out of those three DaS has the most unique setting and also allows for locational diversity unlike BB.

Dark Souls ages even more poorly when you see all the shit they ripped off. Like the opening up doors ambush in Boletaria palace getting moved to the lower undead burg, the identical enemies, the undead soldiers and warriors that have identical scripting to Dreglings and Boletarian soldiers, and so on. So many similarities pile up

      >Vast and more intricate levels with great sense of scale and design were replaced by half assed lame and small "interconnected" levels constantly using tubular design and danger from falling/limiting player movement
      >The world feels artificial because Lordran is ridiculously small, constrained into its open world design. Boletaria feels like an actual kingdom.
      >Homeward bones break the gameplay by allowing an easy and cheap get-out-of-jail move
      >Asylum Demon - Get a face full of ass 3x because they just copy paste it twice later on
      >Taurus Demon - Somehow has more intricate attack animations than any other boss, wasted on shitty arena
      >Pinwheel - Worse version of False Idol from demon's souls
      >Bell Gargoyles - Worse version of maneaters from demon's souls
      >Capra Demon - Another shitty arena, this time with unnecessary enemy spam. Getting a plunge attack involves playing musical chairs
      >Quelaag - Make fuckhuge arena for co-op kino, turns out the solution is to get in close after all. ZZzzzzzz...
      >Iron Golem - Worse version of tower knight from demon's souls
      >Priscilla - Priscilla was just going to be the level-up character, and the Painted World of Ariamis was just the proof of concept test stage that was developed before anything else in Dark Souls
      >O & S - Most epic fight of the whole game forces you to backpedal for 90% of it
      >Sif - Literally has the same moveset as gargoyles except add a cool spin once in a while
      >Four Kings - "Muh DPS check"
      >Seath - Dishonest game design
      >Bed of Chaos - Worse version of Dragon God from demon's souls
      >Gwyn - L2 L2 L2 L2 L2

lol'd at all that greentext. You're not wrong about anything but none of that makes DaS age poorly nor does it detract from what it does well, at the very most it just makes me respect it less and prefer DeS.

Yeah but there is something fresh in Dark Souls. The amount of armor and weapons alone, you can have any kind of build and even larp, no other game in the series gave you so many options (maybe DS2). Also the variety of maps, Dark Souls give you a lit bit of every fantasy setting, in the right measure. DS3 tried the same and failed, every fucking shit looks forced specially that catacombs section.

Is Dark Souls perfect? Fuck no. But has enough to give you satisfaction and a lot of replay value, none of the other souls games have that.

DS3 is weird in that it's easy to play over and over again but it's so unfun. It's like you expect the next playthrough to be good but it's not so you end up stuck in a permanent loop. I had more fun playing DS1 and DS2 a total of five times each than I did playing DS3 six times.

DS3 swamps are easily the most forgiving and easiest-to-get-through swamps of the whole game, and tbh i like the design of "not so much a swamp as an overgrown ruined castle" compared to the other games.

            >Demon's Souls references in Dark Souls 3

            - Movement speed, general physics (attacking, generous dodging, etc.)
            - Auto-revival (embering) after a boss (or helping as a phantom)
            - HP reduction when non-embered + as a phantom
            - No poise
            - Useless heavy armour
            - Mana bar for magic
            - Estoc being OP in PvP
            - Dual kats returning
            - Stormruler
            - Morion Blade
            - Luck stat + Blueblood Sword vs Anri's Straight Sword
            - Scholar's Candlestick = Kris Blade
            - Evangelists reminiscent of Fat Ministers
            - Gauntlet of enemies before L&L very reminiscent 1-3 before Penetrator fight
            - Red-eyed knight * (difficult optional enemy in starting area, the one guarding the Gem)
            - Firelink very reminiscent of the Nexus
            - Irithyll Dungeon reminiscent of Latria prison
            - High Wall of Lothric/Lothric Castle reminiscent of Boletarian Palace (far more than Undead Burg/Parish)
            - Firekeeper "Then touch the darkness within me", vs Maiden in Black "Then touch the demon inside me"
            - Both the Firekeeper and the Maiden in Black are blind (both apparently on purpose)
            - Gimmick bosses being more common
            - Yuria's assassination request reminiscent of Mephistopheles's sidequest, plus they even stand similarly
            - Speaking of which, a character actually called ]Yuria again
            - However, the one that looks like Yuria from Demon's Souls isn't that one, it's Karla, but they look very similar

Other things that I've seen pointed out, which aren't as immediately obvious, but still worth mentioning:

            - Maiden Astraea/Garl Vinland vs Irina/Eygon
            - Rock worms returning
            - Iudex Gundyr is reminiscent of the Old King Doran

Some of these are really stretching what the graph considers a node for each game.
DS1's DLC gets 7 dots, while the whole of Ariandel is 1.

disagree, ds1 was one of the last souls games I played, (played bb, ds2 and 3 before, this was 2 years ago), I have 0 nostalgia attachment to it and ds1 still felt the most mysterious and immersive, maybe the most mysterious was demon souls, but that has to do mostly with it being a one off game where they didn't really know what they were doing as much.

ds1 is incredible and probably the best one.

        Anonymous

The only reason DS1 feels "mysterious and immersive" is because it forces you to backtrack through the "interconnected" world hundreds of times, nevermind the fact that there's no reason to do anything in these areas once you made it through them the first time but since they want to push the "interconnected" theme to make is seem like a pseudo open world there you go.

Why are you so angry about interconnected worlds?

            Anonymous

Because I've played through it. Don't get me wrong it totally works for the first 20 or so levels and having a master key starting item is really cool and unique, but once you've run through andre's smithy for the 50th time just because they turned your bonfire off as a design feature you really have to wonder if it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Also since the game is designed this way you increasingly go on autopilot and increasingly miss things, not only that but as you're leaving areas that you've 100% to make sure that you don't have to come back you find an area sealed "by the lord's power" which means, you guessed it, you're going to have to run all-the-way-back eventually. This is soul sucking gameplay, especially if you're not using a guide.

I can imagine in about 30 hours of gameplay you'll spend at least 5 hours doing death runs or returning to areas you've already been which feels like a monumental waste of time

              >but once you've run through andre's smithy for the 50th time just because they turned your bonfire off as a design feature you really have to wonder if it doesn't overstay its welcome.
Andre's bonfire is like a minute away from firelink, and at the time firelink gets shut off you're going to be going into Sen's anyway so I don't see why you'd have to run back to his bonfire 50 times.
People miss things all the time, having to run through a shortcut occasionally is not the cause of it for most people. And describing blocked paths that you have to return to as soul sucking gameplay is just bizarre. Sounds like you just have some autistic conviction about not returning to areas.
              >I can imagine in about 30 hours of gameplay you'll spend at least 5 hours doing death runs or returning to areas you've already been which feels like a monumental waste of time
And I can imagine that you're wrong. A lot of hours for a lot of people have definitely been wasted bumbling around, being lost and having no idea where to go and whatnot, but I can't see straight backtracking taking that much time unless you never find shortcuts.

It was the right time. DS2 suffered from that massive downgrade so consoles could run it, also it was made by team B and all that shit. DS3 suffered from being too derivative from Bloodborne, also you can see they clearly didn't wanted to do all agian, it was a well done fan service at best. Sekiro tried a new direction but didn't work for me, good if work for someone. Elden Ring tries to tie everything together but at this point they are too addicted to their own formula to make something really great again, so is superbly well done, but fuck me there is no souls in this series anymore for a long time.

I should love Bloodborne since it's souls + lovecraft but I found that game to be insanely boring. Also every map looks the same.

It's not a bad game at all, but you can say the same about Elden Ring and Sekiro. They work very well for some people, but specially for fans of Dark Souls, it's simply not the same. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and even old shit like King's Field had some magic that From simply lost at some point.

      >DS2 suffered from that massive downgrade so consoles could run it,
You’re an utter fucking retard if you believe that it’s consoles that are the reason for shit graphics and performance and not the fact that developers make their games so that 3rd world morons that have a 10+ year old toaster can run them

Actually the reason DS2 looks so bad is because it went from a next-gen game to a cross-gen game mid development, which is why it such a mess overall, not just visually.

DaS, DeS, and BB are very apparently the only times Miyazaki was actually passionate about making a game. And out of those three DaS has the most unique setting and also allows for locational diversity unlike BB.

I just completed DS1 PTD for the first time (after 3, 2, ER that order) because I finally stopped bitching and got over the fact that the kb&m port sucks ass and won't get better after another 10 years.
The thing that struck me the most is that it's way easier to become really fucking OP compared to 3 & 2. About halfway through the game the build I made by just playing the game no grinding just destroyed every boss.
It's probably for the better they changed active poise in the sequels because it trivialises everything once your equip load is high enough.

Not OP but I played DaS first, then 2, 3, BB, Sekiro, Elden Ring and finally Demon's Souls (original). DaS and DS were the best, I was surprised on how modern and polished DS is, second best game I've played from this series. Looking foward to play the remake now.

They didn't really change up the formula much from the original. All DaS did was make heavier builds more viable to use, where-as in DeS it was all about maintaining half-encumbrance to get maximum movement/roll speed.

I can undestand why that marker was added, but it could've been handled better.
I spent more than two hours looking around Limgrave trying to find where the meteor had landed. I missed it because when I was looking around Fort Haight it was foggy as shit so I turned around without having seen the big ass crater that wasn't there before.

Or environments could have been hit by the meteor in its way down, opening up routes through cliffs that weren't there before, or maybe annihilating a building on a particularly well-frequented part of the map. Lots they could have done.

        Anonymous

The worst part is that in a later patch they added a marker so you know instantly where the meteor landed. That wasn't there in my first run of the game, and it disappointed me so much that they took away the mystery and excitement of searching for the place of impact.

Blaidd says "I can see bloody nokron from here" when you meet him at siofra, after the festival is over he tells you that now we can head down to nokron, the meteor crashes leaving floating debris that can be seen from far away all over limgrave. This character is not supposed to be hard, its supposed to penalize players who rely on shields and staggering.

      You're just showing it's weakness.

You didn't know better at the time.
Also, the lighting and color palate. The world felt quite lonely too.

Because it has soul, based on FromSoftwares trackrecord, I don't forsee a good future for the quality of their games:

DeS = Best originality, best swamp zone (Swamp of Sorrow), best atmosphere, best environmental hazards (tied with Dark Souls).
DaS = Best world design, best closed-world interconnected non-linear world design in all gaming history, best sense of adventure, journey and isolation because you can't teleport until you get the lord vessel, best lore (thematically) when ignoring DaS2/DaS3 lore (they are non-canon anyway), best environmental hazards (tied with Demon's Souls).
DaS2 = Best slow and methodical combat (the last true Dark Souls game), best PvP, best shadow system (dynamic shadows with torch), best build variety, best hub OST (Majula), true dual wielding/powerstancing, best new game+ features.
Bloodborne = Best OST, best bosses (tied with Sekiro), best aggressive and fast combat system (tied with Sekiro), best DLC, best horror elements, best weapon design, best individual level design.
Sekiro = Best bosses (tied with Bloodborne), best aggressive and fast combat system (tied with Bloodborne), highest skill floor and skill cap, best animation quality, only souls-ish game in which you actually have to GitGud (can't cheese with overleveling/summoning).
Dark Souls 3 = uhhh...? excels at nothing. Bandai Scamco fucked the development time and funding of Dark Souls 3 and FromSoftware was forced to cut all the unique and amazing ideas such as: Bonfire creation ritual, Serpent invasion event, God's Grave, more interconnected world design etc.
Elden Cringe = not a souls game, an open-world fundamentally prevents the souls formula from existing and thus an open-world game can never be a souls game.

Because it ripped off Runequest and a lot of its design stemmed more from that fantasy aproach, shoving a player into an alien and mysterius environement. That is at different times vertical and at other times horizontal. This gives the player a dissorianting feel and makes the world seem like it is in larger scale than it actually is.

There is a huge difference beatween Kings Field, Demon Souls and Dark Souls, and that is tone. Dark Souls thrusts you into both areas and gives you items of which you know nothing about at first but have to follow a breadcrumb trail. Myazaki started making videogames because of his passion in making fantasy Runequest related maps. Dark souls maps is thiinking outside of the box in terms of areas when it came to fantasy rpg's. Thats the biggest contribution it had on the gaming industry.

There are other similarities to Runequest all the way down to the lore, but mechanically the biggest contribution is: Everyone can use magic and that enemies and combat is dangerous.
