They want to keep the options open and they want to be very careful about it, especially when it comes to people actually getting their hands on the roms directly.
They already did those mini retro consoles, which are nothing more than SBCs loaded up with an emulator and a few roms, and those sold like hotcakes without letting the users directly buy the roms.

If they have it shoved in their face, they NEED to respond legally or they will have future cases saying "but they knew about X doing it and didn't do anything!" If you look at Vimm's news page, you'll see two posts prior to the take-down notice they did a shout out to the recent iOS emulator program for sending a bunch of traffic to them.
      >ninty's lawyers see iOS emulator

I'd take this argument more seriously if my Nintendo account remembered which roms I've bought already and allowed me to download and play them on any of their devices, instead of what Nintendo currently does, IE throws out your entire eshop library every time they change hardware and then selectively trickles a few roms you've already bought before onto their new services and expects you to buy them again.

It's not only about the money or copyrights, it's about a general history reset by the elites and their corporate servants.
The shortest explanation i can give(while keeping it vidya-related) is that in the future, Zoomers, Gen-Alpha and forward will be tech-illiterate beyond the basics of smartphone usage and social media.
The corporations don't want future generations to be exposed to what we used to have back in the day, they only want to keep a vague idea of how things used to be with "indie" games(while filling their brains with corpo-communist gay-porn propaganda), and a few cherry-picked Nintendo, Sega or PS1 classics.
This subject is super long in general and most of it goes more deeper than just games(but it's also connected).

      Can they be trimmed down?

Like, I vividly remember a software that trimmed Nintendo DS files because dumped ROMs were always exactly some 2^n size so ofc there was a lot of wasted empty space on every rom.

I'm just taking the piss, never bothered with Retroarch since it seems like a pain in the ass to set up compared to just downloading individual emulators and working from there. Doesn't help that most Retroarch users /here/ and on other websites are the most insufferably pretentious homosexuals imaginable but no worries, just use what you want.

          Anonymous

Yeah I agree that the community is a pain, but you don't need to get to know them.
I also agree that initially might be a little difficult to set up if you're not familiar with BIOSes and why it needs them, but other than that it's a pretty damn solid generic emulator.
I preferably uses it because I have a hard boner for software compatibility and Retroarch fits the bill perfectly. But I'm also open to other suggestions.

          >Can they be trimmed down?
I have no idea, I haven't looked into it. Generally when I want to get some new games, I go look for the enthusiast/community-supported packs for a given distribution...group? Team? I don't know what to call them. But I assume they've been optimized though I don't check or anything.

I don't have any handhelds, I've never had a Switch or a Steamdeck. But I feel like going miniPC would basically be the same thing.

I just know that Switch games needs to also be trimmed down, so MAYBE it's just a case of games in cartridges because if a pirate wants to extract a game from a rom, the ROM doesn't tell you how much space the game occupies so instead of taking guesses you just dump the entire chip content (this includes unused space).

          t. professional embedded programmer, I know how ROMs work.

Nintendo is the biggest antagonist against games preservation in the world, spending a lot of money trying to ruin people who try to preserve games. Archive.org needs a state judge to grant it special priviledges every 3 years to archive content including video games, Nintendo is the only one fighting to kill the site because archive.org stores roms as well, this will destroy all the presevation work done on video games in the west.

As another note, Nintendo fought to kill archives of the Nintendo power magazine despite the magazine being dead and discontinued.

Clearly your piss water country isn't going a good job given they won't do a thing against a real ban.
          >the only thing that Nintendo
If there's anyone here who isn't understanding things it's you which isn't surprising given gaming media is trying to pin it all on Nintendo even though the majority of removed games are always ones that don't belong to them. The reality is that if it becomes a major issue every single entertainment sector will go to the government and impose an actual effective block on those regions.

I'm not sure what that mumbo jumbo a word soup was supposed to mean. What do you want them to do exactly?
            >The reality is that if it becomes a major issue every single entertainment sector will go to the government and impose an actual effective block on those regions.
Like what? There's literally a bunch of torrent sites for both vidya, movies and other stuff still floating around from early 00's and nothing's been done about them despite all the fuss. The most that they were ever able to do was threaten certain individuals with legal action for either downloading or seeding/spreading the content.
I don't know what sort of fantasy scenarios are playing in your head, but if you host something like a rom site in a country that's already at severe odds with the ones in which the company has some leverage, then the company literally cannot do anything about that server. The most they can do is send some letter of protest and that's that.

            >And you're not understanding things correctly, the only thing that Nintendo could notice is that the server is in Russia
Who's talking about Nintendo? Have you seen the list of games removed from Vimm's?

Again, what sort of leverage would these companies have on a country like Russia, that's already at odds with the host countries of those companies? They literally don't operate in a country like Russia, banning all ties with it. They have 0 legal leverage on what's happening there. Just buy a server there and upload your shit there. Voilà.

              Leverage?
What on earth are you even talking about? They don't have to barter with Russia at all. All they would need to do is gather up and go to the local government in Europe, the US and Asia.

NTA but that's because no one really bothers or speaks about torrents. If they came out in the public eye you can bet that they would go down in an instant just like everything else. That's the point everyone is trying to tell you, things change the more you speak about them.

The frick are you on about? Torrent sites have been a huge issue for big companies for decades now. Hollywood has been battling them for a long time due to movie piracy.
Literally nothing has changed about them. What sort of alternative reality do you people live in? Or are you guys just new to the internet?

Have you just been asleep for this entire conversation?

They really haven't, torrents have always been one of the least popular methods of piracy on the net mainly due to the stigma around them.
                >Hollywood has been battling them for a long time due to movie piracy.
Who told you that? Companies never go after the longer methods of piracy.

All I'm getting from this is that I'm talking to a bunch of iphone generation homosexuals who literally don't understand the internet. It sounds like you gays don't even remember how much hustle and bustle there was around the legal battles of torrent sites, in particular piratebay, with the EU's legal system back in like the early to mid 10s. And they kept closing them down and opening up again. Normalgays were the ones who suffered from it because that was pretty much the only torrenting site they knew. And the servers were hosted in countries where shit like Hollywood had legal leverage. On the other hand, sites like rutracker were not affected by that. At most sometimes you could a warning letter from your ISP if you pirated a newly released movie. And even then they usually wouldn't do shit about it.

Not even close to that. Direct link downloads have been on a steady decline. So have other methods, like using DC and the sort. Sure, some people nowadays also use alternatives like Telegram to get their stuff from, but it's like a middle ground between a private torrent site and a DDL site. And more often then not, they host the same stuff that you can find on most torrent sites.
                t. often download my study/work material from both telegram and torrents

Oh right, and a lot of DDL sites, and telegram channels, often give you downloads to torrent files, when not hosting / as an alternative to direct download links.

There have been numerous legal battles against torrent sites from Hollywood, but it's been quite a while back. There's definitely more articles floating about, but this is what a quick search gave me.

Who said it was a secret? Do you think that Vimm's was a secret too?
The point is that they aren't popular methods, companies literally don't give a shit about how you consume media because what they want more than anything else is to introduce you to the more lucrative parts like merchandise.
But when you children run your mouth off they can't play dumb about it and have to defend their copyright and/or trademarks.
