Why does Nintendo/GF allow the Showdown to exist?

Why does Nintendo/GF allow the Showdown to exist? Don't get me wrong, I do think they are turbogays, but I don't want the place to get v&.

I ask this because they are always shutting down this kind of stuff.

It's open source. Even if they did shut it down, it would pop right back up immediately. Like Prism.

      >it would pop right back up immediately
ironically that would make the simulator die long term.
the community would be fragmented which means less connected users in each group and less incentive to update the different simulators in the new mechanics

Smogon already has several different hosts they use for updates or when the main server is down.

Oh no people will have to play by TPC's rules instead of Smogon's rules how awful.

People like Smogons ruleset so they would just use it
i play on a radical red server because i like the buffs every pokemon got. it has Smogon rules by default

      >It's open source
Meaning nothing. They took down a shit ton of open source games/projects, too.

The only ones that get taken down are the ones that have some kind of monetization, even so much as an ad on a hosting site will get it taken down.

Good question. Showdown is legitimately taking away profit from GF since a lot of people probably just play on Showdown instead of the mainline games.

I don't want it to happen, but I'm shocked that they haven't.

They know those people don't even play the real games anyways.

inb4 nintendo personally searches through my house and confiscates my old cartridges to force me to play SV because im "hurting their profits"

What grounds would they have to take it down? It's a simulator for a single, very specific part of the games. It's not even emulating anything. What exactly are they infringing?

inoffensive, not a competition to the actual games

Maybe read a bit about copyright law?

Neither Nintendo nor Game Freak handle that kind of stuff. That would be TPC. TPC knows about Showdown and regulates it. For example, Showdown mods weren't allowed to add Legends mons until gen 9 or a Legends-style battle system. They also reguarly send gifts to Smogon-only youtubers such as Pokeaimmd. TPC is fine with it because they know that there is a need for competitive battles within the fanbase and Showdown relieves some of that pressure.

Another thing is that they aren't allowed to make a mobile app for Showdown

You can't talk about fangames and emulation on showdown either

do you think this is why dexit will never be undone? Because a browser-based comp sim can do the work instead of the games? Basically kinda-sorta unpaid labor, especially because they (TPC) know it exists

What are they even doing wrong from a legal standpoint? Pokemon battles are just a few number inputs crunched through a formula to give an output, you can't copyright that. All the formulae are available online, we know exactly how battles work under the hood.

      This:

      I guess the art?

If they were fully anal they would argue that Pikachu, Charizard and the whole 1008s are copyrighted and rightfully theirs but let's be real, they could take out images and replace them with crayola drawings or even the name without an image and it would still work for battling. All in all it would be a futile pursuit for their legal team, which is why it goes untouched I guess

There are so many other websites that host spriterips of older Pokemon games, so that would be a flimsy argument. They could also just replace everything with the April Fools sprites while making new ones.

I can just google Pokemon sprites/models and find millions of results hosting them. Even the fricking wikis would be shut down under that logic

They could, but they just don't care. All the art is copyrighted. Would be a stupid PR move to shutdown wikis and fansites.

Wikis and fansites are protected by fair use.

Yes, but you are supposed to use low quality images, for example. Almost no site does that, but they don't care enough as to cease and desist 'em

Because it's a simulator, not a full game. It's not competing with the official games.

I would pop champagne bottles if showdown was shutdown. The mods are autistic kiddie frickers and omgon is a moronic circlejerk. No fun allowed anymore. The seethe from compgays would be glorious

Showdown wasn't the first battle simulator, and won't be the last. Before Showdown, there was ShoddyBattle. Before ShoddyBattle, there was NetBattle.
