Seems like the gaming industry is like the anime dubbing industry where the casting directors all hire their friends and basically create a special club that allows only certain people to ever be hired onto projects.

Nepotism is how 99% of people who make six-figure salaries earn money. If they happen to be qualified (which is like 1% minimum) than so be it. It sucks but its how the world works.

It's not a terrible read, but it just doesn't fit Kiryu's character. That voice seems more suited to a side character or some other (preferably new) main character.

    1. Media industries in general hate working with unknowns like rando VAs they haven't heard before or new game dev studios with no history.
    2. VAs in general are always desperate for work unless they're a big-name one, and even then they get lapses in work.
    3. Nepotism.
    4. Once you're in, you're "in", and become buddies with loads of circles unless you get accused of a no-no thing, after which you're blocked out forever, even if the accusation is false.
    5. Nepotism.
    6. If the VA is liked, you get free advertising and a boost to your rating for basically nothing.

Troy Baker is a bitch that called the Silent Hill 2 VAs greedy assholes and shit while also giving a shit performance in the HD demake. Also is too good for anime even though he got his big breaks from Tale of Vesparia and Persona 4. Nolan North loves VA work and having fun with it while troy is a holier than thou homosexual.

No source, but take his attitude of the original Silent Hill 2 VAs, not doing Kanji anymore and acting like a crybaby bitch while doing TLoU1 and there you go.

            Anonymous

Didn't he stop doing Kanji because he went union after persona 4 and atlus didn't want to deal with unions?

Also I remember Troy lamenting that Bandai didn't even bother to call him to do the ps3 version dialogue in Tales of Vesperia. He was disappointed because he was willing to do the work for free because he loved playing Yuri that much.

The Screen Actor's Guild has tiers. The highest tier gives the best health/dental/eye benefits. Yet costs thousands upon thousands of dollars. Millionaire actors pay for their family and friends, while every other actor has to go to lower tiers. The highest tier also guarantees more work.

We need a male voice actor? Guess that's going to be Troy Baker. Picking [Favorite VA] would mean higher pay, since you are going outside of contract rules.

No, Anon. Without unions, the industry would fuck everyone over far more. An example being AI voices and writing. Consumers (You) should be doing everything in your power to fight even less effort in your hobby.

Anon, you need to get off Ganker. Localization companies have to pay a fortune for the default voices in Japanese games. In many cases, these leaves them with no money to pay voice actors from their actual country.

I know you’re shitposting here, but this is actually true of Nolan North.

People say he only ever does Nathan Drake voice, and that’s kinda true if you look at his main character roles. But he also does a ton of minor nobody characters that no one even thinks about. Like he was the German scientist guy in COD zombies back in the 2010-2012ish era. He was the main bad guy (French skunk) and his lieutenant (Cuban tiger) in Sly 4. He was N.Gin in 1 or 2 crash bandicoot games.

Troy Baker seems like a bit of pretentious douche, who only does “high quality” roles. Wheras Nolan North will seemingly play anything or anyone.

Because voice actors are generally fucking shit. They can for the most part only do cartoon voices, exagerated bravado and yelling half their fucking lines in some ridiculous fucking voice. Most of them are stuck in the 90's still.

Subtlety isnt exactly their strong suit. There's only a handfull voice actors than have the chops to do anything remotely close to serious drama and alot of producers just hire actual actors to do it in mo-cap instead of going through the hassle of finding some half decent voice actor.

Nepotism, but also it was kinda reverse nepotism at the start.

Like with the funimation gang and the 10 anime voices in the 00s. Being willing to do it was seen as a black spot so they just had to keep hiring the same people over and over.

A handful of major studio releases as side characters and a shit load of indies. I'm in a new indie game that everyone keeps roasting for controversy on here too. Don't wanna say which ones for obvious reasons but it would surprise people just how much work you can get by being a decent enough actor. You don't have to suck the union dick since covid and remote recording. Most remote set-ups are shit though anyone that tells you a good mic won't get you a job is a liar

American VA's are terrible because they're not trained actors, they're people who read lines.
If you want quality English speaking VA's you go to England where the people there are acting in television, on the stage and doing VA, they have to be multi-occupational by the nature of the competition in Britain. However in the U.S. because of the strong Cali Union if you are accepted as a VA for games you can make that your solitary career.

The worst voice actor in Project Wingman is the one guy with a british accent. He sounds like he recorded his lines on a phone and just doesn't sound like a pilot would.

        Anonymous

I've not played that game or know who you're referring to so I can't really comment. I would say by and far the best examples of British VA's especially this year alone with FFXVI the voice cast was praised highly, Baldurs gate 3 the voice cast was again praised very highly whereas the Resident Evil 4 remake one of the major complaints was the absolutely atrocious Ada Wong VA who sounded exactly as if she were reading lines as they appeared with no emotive or expressive intonation.

Yes, it's great. I just learned that Auntie Ethel was in Eastenders for a few episodes, but then who hasn't? It's like Star Trek for British actors.

The VA industry needs more new talent that isn't of the "eceleb" kind. I like that Stranger of Paradise's main cast is also relatively unknown, at least when it comes to vidya.

  31. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

    they're reliable
if you can count on an actor to show up on time, read lines competently, and is pleasant to work with, why bother trying new talent where recording time is literally money spent?
every second spent in the recording space is money down the drain, you need people who can nail it and nail it fast

The truth is that people don't actually know what good acting is, including voice acting.

So when you get some voice actors that the public accepts as good it's safer to just reuse them, rather than find a new VA that sounds scientifically identical but the audience decides is shit because a bug flew past them or they had too many beans that evening.

  35. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Literally every industry has a job market problem because they want to pay everyone pennies while expecting them to be god wizards at everything without needing training. Once the VA industry feels like doing more voice training, youll see more voice actors.

      Anonymous

      >Just throw money at the problem
No, the problem is not money it's the lack of hiring outside talent from non-union credentials, casting agents are also a problem because they tend to be unable to decipher what actor is suitable for what role therefore you get a Swiss army knife for a VA who is capable of performing many roles like Noland North or Jennifer Hale.
There is also a huge problem with the hiring being so focused on one State that being California. It is incredibly strange especially given access of technology with the ability to perform VA's from any part of the country, or World for that matter yet the preference for most games to hire their VA's is from a certain Californian based acting agency that is Union aligned.
People who know which one will know what I'm talking about.
