XY has by far the most forgettable locations in mainline pokemon. The only route I clearly remember is the desert one where you get chased down by unavoidable encounters, which is one of the worst areas to explore.
I felt this way about Unova. I remember every route in Sinnoh but stuggle to remember any in BW other than routes 4 and 6.

You could maybe make this argument for Meetwo, but if all they cared about was the starters having megas they wouldn't have made 2 for Zard, put the choice early in the main game, and given you the mega stone immediately. The clear intention was that they would be a part of every story team, just like the Lucario.
It's even more blatant when you compare to other starter gifts, which in every other game are either post-game exclusive or optional side features.

Well, fact is, they're not handling new gimmicks the same way they handled megas. There was no reason some gen 6 Pokemon couldn't have been designed with a mega evolution in mind when Game Freak went and did just that with Gigantamax.

Possibly? With Megas they considered just making new Evolutions like Sinnoh (and even made Sycamore a student of Professor Rowan incidentally). They instead made them temporary power-ups, and then battle gimmicks for each new region came after. I think that is one reason why there is no Mega Greninja, Delphox, etc.
