Why don't people emulating it enjoy it as much as Switch players? Despite having higher resolutions and framerates, they still say it's mediocre. What gives? Is there an argument to be made that emulation removes a game's soul?

Maybe a little bit, but the reason they don't like it is because they don't have the sunk cost fallacy that comes with buying a game, so they can see the game for what it really is. People who willingly buy a game are more likely to convince themselves it's better than what it is because they spent money on it. The people emulating and pirating it don't have this issue, so they're less likely to have a biased opinion of the game.

It makes 0 fucking difference, I've played some games on both emulator and the Switch itself and emulator is often just better
People playing Zelda while it was leaked dealt with more issues than usual for emulators, but other games just run with no issues as soon as they're out and Zelda's are probably fixed by now

It's not that they have shit standards, it's that they worship any shit that Nintendo squeaks out.

I have shitload of complaints about the game but I find myself compelled to get through it and there is some degree of enjoyment. I think I want to get through the game so I can be involved in discussions about it since it will be a hot topic for years to come. I'll say this much: it's an alright game and I think the reason it is being shit on so relentlessly is because Nintendo has unceremoniously killed Legend of Zelda, is making a nu zoomer fortnite IP, and is throwing the dead, rotting flesh of LoZ over top of it so they can guarantee sales figures. It's annoying as fuck that they've done that and I bet if it were just released as an entirely new IP, you would see more parity somewhere in the middle between what mindless nintendo drones/journalists rate the game and what upset series fans/Ganker users rate the game.

People with the ability to emulate have a selection of games to choose from magnitudes upon magnitudes higher than any tendie limited to his consoles games. They are also waaaaay less likely to be a brand loyalty fag and won't be giving it the free nintendo boost. Basically anyone playing this game on switch is most likely a nintendie who's going to give it an extra 2 points just for being nintendo, when a person emulating won't, and the person playing on a switch has like 1% of the games to compare it to as an opportunity cost to play compared to someone emulating.

Having essentially infinite games at no cost renders them all worthless because there's no reason to prefer any particular one over another

          Anonymous

Having a plethora of options and not having sunk cost allows people to judge a game far more objectively. They don't feel like they have to be committed to the one they have because they have no stakes in it and can easily move on to a different game. So if a pirate or someone who emulates sticks around to play a game, it's because they find it genuinely good and fun, and for no other reason.

            Anonymous

I don't think such people are necessarily inherently objective. I think there's a greater tendency towards cynicism. The idea that no games deserve your money is technically a fundamentally cynical outlook, regardless of whether games have any intrinsic value to begin with. So I believe that such individuals are often more prone to focus the bad rather than the good.

It's in some ways reflected in gaming as a whole. People who continue to buy consoles probably do so because they still have faith in those brands, whether or not that faith is deserved. People who are staunchly PC-oriented and resent consoles aren't necessarily gonna be optimistic about games as a whole since the way games are designed are still kind of dominated by consoles. Most games, and especially all Japanese games, are designed for consoles first.

              >The idea that no games deserve your money is technically a fundamentally cynical outlook
That's not true of most pirates or people who emulate though, however they may think a game is not worth as much money as it's being sold for. For me personally I pirate what I think is abusive and emulate what I think is either abusive or otherwise unavailable. I buy tons of games, but on PC those games are also often extremely cheap. Because I have this choice I'm far less likely to view anything on consoles as not only exceptional, but worth the exorbitant price. So it's not even just people who exclusively pirate, it's PC in general who simply have higher standards and expect more for what they get. And you can even see that in thins like steam reviews where they will trash a big well known hyped up game over performance or visual issues someone on consoles would've bent over backwards to defend or sweep under the rug.

That's a good thing though. Nobody wants to be a consoomer who just laps up whatever pigslop gets put on our plate. It doesn't help that most Nintendo fans revel in using popularity as a metric for a game being good.

              >dude this game is popular, look at the metacritic! it's a masterpiece!

I can be contrarian against every Nintendo game just on that alone, but thankfully I can also back up my gripes with critique about the gameplay.

Genuine objectivity requires for you to be as neutral as possible. And true neutrality isn't something I often see on Ganker. More often than not people go into things with certain expectations, and a lot of people here are stubborn in their views. It makes most discussions pretty pointless because no one's ever gonna change their minds. Objectivity is a pope dream on this board.

your pic is showing a different problem than what you think it is. its saying a choice of equal value overwhelms idiots, not that having access to a product for free devalues that product. the mona lisa or really any art piece in a museum is a great example of anyone being able to see something for free(provided you are within walking distance at least) without devaluing the work.

yes and people who pirate everything tend to have no respect for the value of effort, it's apt.
research has shown most pirates tend to just pirate for the sake of hoarding media - they don't really care about the quality of what they're pirating.

        Anonymous

It isnt flying over no one's heads. Everyone can emulate and anyone on this thread emulates games since forever. Sunk cost is a factor for someone being overly positive about a product but you can't deny there's an equal opposite force of cynicism by people who is willing to play and judge a game with that level of expectations on an emulator with additional performance issues and glitches (but at 4k resolution so that makes perfectly playable apparently).

And its not that the glitches might be bad enough to render it unplayable, but in this case, it's pretty evident that these people are mlre excited to find things to complain about on Ganker than to actually enjoy what the game has to offer. Hell, all those threads about completing the game before it was even out are pretty jarring since after playing it, it doesnt seem like the kind of game that can be enjoyed in a rush with all the little silly sidequests, which seem like a great, welcomed improvement from BotW.

And it's okay if you personally dont enjoy the game all that much, but that doesnt make it automatically shit. I dont like gran turismo, but that doesnt make it shit.

And for the record, i was kind of worried that the game was going to be too samey a couple of hours in after the tutorial, and having completed the rito village quest, i was not too impressed. But after 30 hours i have seen how the game slowly delivers the good stuff and i am having an absolute blast. Fusing mechanic is genius, the caves are a lot of fun and there's just a lot of fun little happenings around in hyrule. I personally can't drop the game.

Emulator users have access to a larger library of videogame media than any other people in the world, and thus often have tastes and opinions that are the culmination of a diverse set of videogames.

The average switch user, statistically, has never owned a videogame console aside from the Nintendo switch, and failing that, they've only ever played on post-wii Nintendo consoles. Their taste is the culmination of a much smaller library, one that doesn't allow them to be exposed to a diverse set of works.

ToTK may very well be the absolute best game that a nintendo switch user has ever played, but it's not even close to the best game that someone who is well versed in the medium and is an enthusiast of it has ever played.

People who pirate a video game tend to give less fuck about it because they did not really put work or effort into getting that game.

When you spend money on something, it is hard earned money,

There is some truth to that. The thrill of the chase. Easy come, easy go and all that. Like lending someone a piece of expensive equipment and they break it because they are careless with it. Whereas if they had themselves saved up to buy it, they would also take care of it. Apparently according to this thread the person being careless and breaking things is some enlightened, advanced individual. That wouldn’t discount them from being considered a complete asshole and a liability though.

For me the problem with emulation is that it’s not the intended way. Like when pixelfags argue that openGL quake textures look worse than the unfiltered hardware blocky ones because the textures were never intended to be filtered. Similar argument.

I can play a ROM of street fighter 2 championship edition on a handheld device, or I can play it on a real arcade board with original CRT, sticks, speakers, cabinet art. The presentation is worlds apart, not to mention there are more glitches in the emulated one. Such as only one special move sound effect playing at a time without overlaps.

I dont care about emulation but I dont agree with emulatorfags that they are enlightened beings. They are povs. Well done for saving a few shekels, scrooges. Tightarses.

        Because they paid for it.

Not really. Movies cannot be 100% engageing all the time for everybody for every single minute. Movies have slow parts, action, sex, etc and these require varying degrees of focus and effort from the audience. If you ONLY make movies trying to appeal to the audience not willing to make an effort, your movies will fucking suck for sure.

Videogames also require some degree of good will from the consumers to be enjoyed lr else you get the snoy goyslop movie fodder.

Yesterday, I emulated Land of the Dead for the original xbox, and I had a fun time by myself. I also own an original xbox. I do not see a difference between playing games on that original xbox, and playing xbox games on my laptop.

So, what's the explanation for that? You're not going to tell me "No, you enjoy playing games you bought more. Don't trust your own feelings, trust me"? Because people have said stuff like that to me before, and it sounds like bullshit.

It's not the game that loses its soul. It's the player. They've tasted sin and vice, losing the gift of genuine happiness. This effect dulls with time, as the genuine happiness is replaced with nostalgia for a time long past, but if you're pirating/emulating a new game you don't have that. You have nothing.

  42. 2 weeks ago

Well it does kinda make a bit of sense that people who emulate BotW are in general probably more likely to heavily criticize it. I mean if Ganker's any indication (not that Ganker would ever represent any majority), the majority of people who emulate Switch games are also deeply critical of the Switch. And subsequently, those who emulate TotK are typically gonna be those who are less tolerant of the game's flaws.

Naturally the reverse is also true. Anyone who actually bought a Switch is likely gonna see more value in the Switch, hence why they bought it. And if they bought BotW, they did so because they believed it was worth their money. They went in with the expectation that they would enjoy it, whereas those who pirate BotW did so under the expectation that it wouldn't be worth their money.

Correct. And that's fine. Perfection is something that can be strived for, but never achieved, it's how we can keep making things better over time.
      >but nobody here accepts this which is why you all can not enjoy life
Ironically the people who piss me off the most here are the ones who act like perfection is achievable and that the game they like is perfect just because they like it. That mentality isn't just disrespectful to everything else, it just leads to stagnation and worse games as corporations know full well how easy it is to abuse that mindset.

my favorite game is perfect FOR me, I don't care if others enjoy it. I am not the marketer trying to sell it to them. thus when I discuss my personal favorite, it gets old arguing with people who don't like it because really im just there to talk with anons about the thing I like.

          >my favorite game is perfect FOR me, I don't care if others enjoy it
And that's fine. Everyone's like that really at the end of the day. Problem is even if you love a game, hell especially if you love a game, you should still be willing to critique it in the hopes that the industry can learn from that and improve on it even more, and fanboys simply are not willing to do that. They just go out there claiming it's a masterpiece and shoving sales and journo scores everywhere and calling anyone who pushes back or says anything even a little negative a fanboy of some rival corporation. All that does is lead to situations like Pokemon. Or really just modern Nintendo in general now where they know they can get away with anything, so why try, just shovel it out.
People can get annoyed by criticism here, and to be fair a lot of it is annoying as it's little more than insults, but it's not criticism that ruins things. It's blind braindead adoration that leads to stagnation and abuse and has a very real affect on this industry.

            >It's blind braindead adoration that leads to stagnation and abuse and has a very real affect on this industry.
+ the apathy of the masses who simply don't care and consoom whatever's popular

            >you should still be willing to critique it
it just does get old having the same argument about whats wrong about a game when someone comes into a thread to complain about why they dont like it. thats where you get some of this "fuck off we're full" on older games. we've had these threads for nearly 20 years now, a lot of people aren't interested in exploring the flaws of our favorite game because there was a time for that. but admittedly you can't really avoid things like this in a place like this, even back when the site was a lot better. I just felt like making the distinction

              Anonymous

Right, you don't have to critique all the time or anything. I mean it's more just the willingness to do so that's important.
I mean if someone comes in vaguely saying the game is just rancid dogshit 0/10 no redeeming qualities blahblahblah without anything substantial then they should rightfully be told to fuck off. It's annoying, especially when it then becomes very easy for others to then conflate actual thoughts and criticism with that level of shitposting.
But I feel the same way about people who come in saying the game is a flawless masterpiece 10/10 gotyay cope and seethe about it. These people should also be told to fuck off. And they're the ones, from the journos to the fanboys, that really ruin everything for everyone by condoning everything and trying to quash criticism so that nothing gets fixed or improved upon. What's worse is these are the people that have "acceptable" "optimistic and nice" views and opinions on the rest of the internet where they have a far louder and far more easily appeased voice that this industry sees and then lowers its standards for. It's a cancerous form of if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all, or you'll be downvoted and hidden.

I can see where you're coming from with this post, and you get a lot of those second kinds of people you mentioned going out of their way to shitpost in other games threads because of course people don't like games half the time because they like the game. they like the drama surrounding a game.

I’ve been playing it on my PC since the leak, and can confidently say there is no tangible difference in how the game feels to play at 30 vs 60 fps. It doesn’t matter in the slightest, because the game was designed for 30 and never expects quick inputs. The nicest thing about playing at 60 is the menu feels nicer to navigate.

The resolution could be better, I definitely prefer it at 1440p to 720p, but you stop noticing the higher fidelity after about 5 minutes, and if you’re playing on handheld I would imagine it’s fine.

If Necromunda was the only video game you could afford per year, you would play the hell out of it.

it does make a lot of sense to me, I wasn't exactly rich growing up so my father would give me like 1 game a year or so, usually on my birthday so I would play the shit out of what I had, it did help that certain games like empire earth had map editors so I could constantly and endlessly mess around with things, I also remember getting demo discs and playing the shit out of those as well, like a classic rainbow six: rogue spear one which had a single small level which I beat more times than I could count, I memorized it inside out and I loved experimenting with crazy new routes and stuff

this may be moving away from the initial point a bit but nowadays I just simply do not have the same patience I once had as a child, there are many games I've played recently which I know would benefit greatly from more playtime to get a full mastery of the mechanics like furi or bayonetta, but I just moved on after my initial playthroughs because there's so much out there to be experienced so I feel like it would be a "waste" to spend hundreds of hours in those games mastering them, in a way I kinda feel sad though because I know my child self would spend months on a single game messing around with every single intricacy, but it's something I just can't even force myself to do anymore

    It's quite simple.

If you're into emulating, chances are you've been playing videogames for 10+ years and a wide variety of them. Why would you be emulating if you're not replaying games you played 15 years ago? (unless you're strictly pirating)

That cant be said for the average nintendo fanboy who only play 2-3 games every 3 years or so and exclusively nintendo games.
Nintendo fanboys are going fucking crazy about being able to slap assets together and make shit, while pc players have been doing that since 2005 or whenever garrys mod came out.

People who emulate are just likely to have higher standards.

People emulating it aren't locked into an ecosystem. They aren't desperately trying to justify their purchase of a console. Paying for the game forces me to invest more time and copium into it. I can't stop playing until I find something that made the purchase worthwhile. It's hard to not find anything to like in a game that has so much shit stuffed into it.

I understand why many people would dislike this game. The gameplay is all about simple and instant gratification, perfect for TikTok-zoomers. If you're a longtime fan it is a little sad to see a classic series being homogenized into what can be termed pretty accurately as "slop". Us old Zelda fans will just have to deal with it, or go back to playing the classics.

People who emulate don’t have to justify purchasing a shitty game by convincing themselves and others it’s not that bad. Paypigs are too blinded by the sunk cost fallacy to see the game for what it is.

probably because the people who pirated the game only did so because they decided early on they weren't willing to waste $70 to play it and just wanted to confirm whether it was crap or not? (which it was)
Meanwhile the people who bought it full price are corpo dick-sucking drones who would buy the game and play through it no matter how shitty the game turned out.

This. It'd be one thing if it was an all new game that people weren't wary of. It's another when everything nintendo showed up to this point was sketchy and disappointing. The people who were rightfully wary pirated it to find out and the people who excused and justified and were going to buy it anyway no matter what waited to do just that.

People who emulate have access to more games and have higher IQ, are more intellectually critical of shit games, even if they play them for free because they value their time
Tendies are low IQ, low standards and don't know any better due to being under exposed to quality gaming, so are easily satisfied by drivel and are even happy to pay for it as mindless brand brainwashed consumer cuckolds

    a) Switch games are made to be enjoyed at consecutive small burts of gameplay. Regardless of what people try to tell you, the Switch IS a handheld, and every single game in it have that in mind. Handheld games change not just the HUD, but the entire gameplay planning is made for that change.

    b) You have hundreds of thousands of games available on a PC when emulation is on the table. It's just harder to retain attention this way, you just keep skipping through tittles without ever finishing them

Emulatorfags don't have anything valuable to contribute, they just want to be inflammatory and when they figured out people would just tune them out for trying to hijack conversations by bringing up how much they pirated games, they decided to just swing for the fences and just call the game shit.

No, but there's an argument to be made that Switch owners feel a need to justify/rationalize their fisher price tablet purchase, so they grossly inflate their perception of having fun with Switch exclusives.

I'm emulating the game right now. I emulated and completed all of botw too meaning all shrines, explored everywhere and did the DLC. I didn't like botw that much. It was pretty boring, the shrines sucked, the story sucked, and there was nothing to really do in the overworld. The reason I played through it all was because I didn't have anything else to do at the time and was bored. Figured I'd give it a shot and see why people liked it so much. I'm trying totk out because of the fusing mechanic but it's suffering from what made botw boring to me.

Spending almost $100 on something means you already are inclined to enjoy it as you’re willing to waste so much money on it. It also means you have more of an incentive to force yourself to like it so you don’t feel like an idiot for spending so much. For a lot of gamers, the money spent unironically makes the game feel like it has more value, even if it’s trash

On PC I have a shitload of sandbox games, I don't need to play a mediocre Breath of the Wild mod in order to get the same experience as a tendie, thus I have higher standards than a person with buyer's remorse and brand loyalty. If you think "They can play it at higher resolutions and framerate" is the problem that makes no sense because I can turn the graphics down to mediocre tendie standards on an emulator, the problem is I already played breath of the wild and this doesn't feel different in the way Majora's Mask did back in the day just because you stapled on a stapler to make contraptions with. I have been playing GMod for a very long time on PC, that's not as impressive to people outside of the corporate dicksucking tendie bubble.

One thing I've noticed here in the past few years is that there is a growing trend of people coming up with all kinds of mental gymnastics to "prove" a successful product (not just video games) isn't really successful, and this thread is just another example of that. What I mean by that isn't the usual "normies have shit taste, popular things bad", but something that's more similar to burying your head in the sand and denying reality:
    >yes it sold millions, but no one actually played it
    >the only people who like this are people who have never tried anything else in the genre
    >you're just "forcing" yourself to like it because you spent money for it (this thread)

Switch owners (and Nintendo fanboys) are in general sub-human retards that justify mediocrity and poor-performance to support their cult corporation despite the fact that the technology (i.e hardware & software) exists to make Zelda games or any Nintendo franchise perform and play much better. This ""comment"" that you made OP is top-tier coping especially when NinGAF fools like yourself spend so much time modding and improving Breath of The Wild on PC through Emulation, which you cunts try to simultaneously justify Nintendo to "legally" suppress so it doesn't make the childrens handheld toy that you worship look pathetic in comparison to modern standards while utilizing emulation tools/programs to modify Nintendo IP's.
