thats a problem with the character models, not the background

The problem is mixing both, it looks like these indians videos

you people are stupid, and you'll always be stupid. the only solace I take is you're a homosexual who will never pass on your genes.

Yeah you're old and no one shares your nostalgia for a shitty archaic and forgotten anime visual novel.

OP specifically picked the game with the worst implementation in history, where 99%of the time it looks like you're just moving a cursor in front of a picture, backgrounds too big and confusing, and characters too small and weirdly positioned.
If you want to see the actual might of prerendered backgrounds, REmake and RE0 is where it's at. Instant transition between backgrounds, and consistent lighting and shadows, 20 years later still looks great and better than most new games even with the shitty upscaling

Looks stupid when the lightning flash only illuminates the character and not the surrounding environment.

Even your example shows the massive flaws those prerender backrounds have.
The shadows of the enviroment don't interact with the characters at all and you can only have one camera perspective.

Have you considered the fact that not every game has to be fully 3d?

Because they actually render the background

Simply pre-render the characters as well. Or adopt a unique artstyle.

Couldn't they just turn the pre-rendered images into a panorama then just wrap it aroud the level?

    no idea

    >no limit to what you can put in there
    >will look the same on all settings
    >better performance

The aesthetic in og ff7 looks much better than the remake. It looks more gritty and real in the og.

I can't think of a scenario in which something like this would be necessary today.
It's worth mentioning that the people who work on video game art these days, indie or AAA, have no experience with these older styles that came about as a result of technical limitations.

    Harder to re-use assets
People act like fixed camera angles are the devil
Easier to just slap some shit together in unreal and call it a day
I do miss it though and Im glad I got to be a kid/teen for gen 4-6 and see the stepping stones transitioning 2D to 3D

There are games released today with prerendered backgrounds but you probably don't notice them. One is Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

More money, artistry, and time. Games don't have the luxury of experimentation anymore, so those old methods are "outdated". AI will make it feasible again, and you may actually see some good shit in a couple years. It'll always be niche, though.
