a game's save location should be in the games installed folder because it should not be fucking allowed to write anywhere else without asking me. I don't want to have to search my whole hard drive and hidden shit to find the fucking parts of a program i want to get rid of
this
unironically.. this is what you get.. when you SANDBOX programs (like sandboxie) but games hate sandboxing/etc due to nagger anti-cheats so you just can't ever win
If the game is storing shit in appdata, or my documents, I want it to AT VERY LEAST create a link or put READMEFORSAVEDATA.txt in the game folder telling me where that shit is stored so I don't have to fucking google it or "browse" folders for this shit.
Sometimes games are in folders that are unexpected. Like before certain studios were taken over by devs, etc. It's a literal hellscape.
Only people in support of this absolute fuckery are fortnite autists who only play a handful of games and don't see the problem because their save game weirdo location is "common knowledge" or "well known already" but that's literally not always the case for people with lots of games installed.
Shouldn't have to be Dora the Explorer to find out where shit is saved.
if there was less subterfuge it would be ok - like if you could ask windows 'what folders does this game exe access?' it should be readily able to tell you
also let's not forget about the absolute fucking memes
where some shitty games will use appdata roaming for "launch" settings and then switch to appdata local for "user" settings once you select a save file
whole shit is a mess
looking at EA, with Alice Madness Returns for example where this was an issue
>hur dur >maybe two users will play game >let's use roaming for versatile settings >once they choose who's playing use a different folder
It's annoying as all hell
and these are AAA games not obscure indie shit
the standard is there is no standard
all a joke
>If the game is storing shit in appdata, or my documents, I want it to AT VERY LEAST create a link or put READMEFORSAVEDATA.txt in the game folder telling me where that shit is stored so I don't have to fucking google it or "browse" folders for this shit.
Hell, just put a shortcut to the savegame folder into the root directory, that would solve all issues and would be the easiest solution.
Not a zoomer, but having 3 different places where games are saved, maps and characters being in totally different directories, etc is silly. It doesn't matter that open file location is a thing.
>Sirfield loads model replacers and .esm mods from your saved games data folder in documents instead of the games data folder >the mod tool .txt file to make it read more than 10 .esm files goes in your appdata hidden folder
It just works
it used to just create a folder in My Documents with either the title of the game or the name of the dev (which would then have a subfolder of the game title)
I don't know why the fuck devs decided it was better to hide the saves in fucking appdata of all places
>I don't know why the fuck devs decided it was better to hide the saves in fucking appdata of all places
because it is an official recommendation for developers, AppData is the place that user-exclusive data for applications (such as saves for video games) is SUPPOSED to go into
why microsoft decided to make that folder hidden by default is another question
doing it like
Imagine a world without this dev (or microshit) autism...
C:GamesGamesSave Data<DEVELOPER><GAME> >stores game saves for progress, user settings, everything.
IMAGINE
suggested is wrong, because all pc users would share save files

IMAGINE (You) suggested is wrong, because all pc users would share save files
C:Games:Save Data<Developer><Game> can have subfolders per winuser like
C:Games:Save Data<Developer><Game>Anonmoosesavadata.dat
or
C:Games:Save Data<Developer><Game>Anoncatsavedata.dat
Having games store their shit in random locations is retarded
Some store it remotely some store it in the steam folder some store it in my documents.. it's all a joke. Some even store it in the install folder but store the SETTINGSs in the appdata. So your GAME SAVES are in the install folder but SETTINGSs like res/difficulty/etc are in appdata, fucking lmao.
You don't game. Stop acting smug.
The current state of this is fucking stupid and too confusing.
>C:Games:Save Data<Developer><Game> can have subfolders per winuser like
then if the game also had to store user config file, a folder like C:GamesConfig... would have to be created, and if they wanted to store some other technical nuisance files then yet another folder and a following tree of DevGame... would have to follow
it's better to have 1 directory for any and all kind of files that applications need to store per user and that in fact is AppData >Having games store their shit in random locations is retarded >Some store it remotely some store it in the steam folder some store it in my documents.. it's all a joke.
I know right? Wouldn't it be better if ALL developers would properly program their shit?
Microsoft made the env variable %AppData% for a reason - so developers don't need to worry about where to store user data, they just use the variable and are done with it. The problem stems from pajeet programmers who are allergic to documentation and ignore any and all standards. >Stop acting smug.
blame incompetent game developers, problem lies on their side, windows has already provided a solution
Zoomers or not, save file location standardization is something we should have. It's a mess right now.
>save file location standardization is something we should have
believe it or not, we do. some developers are just too retarded to follow it
>muh pajeets
The problem with Appdata is that it's hidden, most normies do not even know it exists. The closest thing to save file standards are based on visibility to the end user. >My Documents/ My Games >Game Install/ Save
You're kind screwed either way, players are going to complain regardless of your choice.
Pretty sure that folder was supposed to be used by games made for Games for Windows Live.
They also made "Games" screen with Vista and some games would actually add themselves there. But very small number of them.
a game's save location should be in the games installed folder because it should not be fucking allowed to write anywhere else without asking me. I don't want to have to search my whole hard drive and hidden shit to find the fucking parts of a program i want to get rid of

Save data should never, under any circumstance, be in the install folder. You're all fucking retarded.
Why are you autists acting like this is a big deal? I mean sure, the lack of a standard sucks, but how fucking often do you even need to access your local save file?
For something like Minecraft it can be super annoying because of how large savegame files can get.
Like a lot of people I have Windows still installed on an old small separate SSD, and the rest of my files stored on different drives. Documents gets a drive of its own, My Games has a drive of its own, etc.
The game constantly trying to bloat out my OS drive is extremely annoying, especially when I installed it on a different drive entirely in the first place.
The shitty thing is that MS literally implemented a folder that was designed to hold savegames to avoid this shit and no one really fucking used the feature.
Because nobody felt the need to follow any kind of standard. Microsoft tried to make it obvious but barely any developer gave a shit. This is how we ended up with this clustercuck >save within the games folder >save within appdata >save within the windows document folder >save within the windows games folder >save within steams folder
Exceptionally weird when games suddenly change it for some reason and online reports are conflicting cause nobody had any idea when exactly that change happend.
i too fell for that meme and it was a constant battle.
now that boot drive that i bought to be windows lives as a glorified flash drive with some games on it.
I should probably try and switch it around too, I actually have another SSD now it just seemed too daunting to set everything up again, and besides my other SSD is SATA I guess there's still benefit on having windows itself on the nvme
Admin permissions to modify C:Program files makes it difficult to save games on the game directory. And there is no standard location so developers put save files all over the place.
This really isn't a problem if you don't have autism.
That's the default path for Steam, Or if you pirate and just click next, next, next when installing a game.
Again, I don't have autism so installing games in C:Program Files is not a big deal

Some? Try most. But I'm curious as to what the standard actually is.
>muh pajeets
The problem with Appdata is that it's hidden, most normies do not even know it exists. The closest thing to save file standards are based on visibility to the end user.

And my personal favorite
>registry
Any other standard locations for saves?
>registry
what game stores it there?
Mostly ancient ones
probably does not exist, but game that would modify it's own executable for saving would be pretty evil
Because Microsoft themselves cannot be arsed to make it a standard, they made like 5 separate places where you can store app settings.
Then why did they do this in windows vista?
Pretty sure that folder was supposed to be used by games made for Games for Windows Live.
They also made "Games" screen with Vista and some games would actually add themselves there. But very small number of them.
>decided to reinstall steam
>shift deleted the folder
>forgot that all the saves are there

how about... just storing it in the installation folder
we evolved past it

The same folder as the game is the only correct place. If you put them anywhere else you are a pajeet programmer.
when you delete the game you lose the save files then doe
>right click
>copy
>back space
>make new folder "save game backups"
>open
>paste
>uninstall
>do you also want to delete saves games?
>no
>uninstall
>saved games still there
lol. lmao even.
is how it was literally done back in the day.
I haven't used windows for years but I recall that on Windows XP they were stored somewhere in My Documents
The shitty thing is that MS literally implemented a folder that was designed to hold savegames to avoid this shit and no one really fucking used the feature.
what a non issue
sir good morning!

>fell for the tiny boot drive meme
>things keep piling up in C:
I got rid of a lot of it by deleting like 15 GB of modded rising storm 2 maps
i too fell for that meme and it was a constant battle.
now that boot drive that i bought to be windows lives as a glorified flash drive with some games on it.
I should probably try and switch it around too, I actually have another SSD now it just seemed too daunting to set everything up again, and besides my other SSD is SATA I guess there's still benefit on having windows itself on the nvme

This really isn't a problem if you don't have autism.
Anyone who would put video games in C:Program Files should just stick to console gaming.
That's the default path for Steam, Or if you pirate and just click next, next, next when installing a game.
Again, I don't have autism so installing games in C:Program Files is not a big deal
>~/bin/<game>/save/
Yep, it just works
Imagine being too unskilled to even navigate a directory for saves.
OP is a total fucking moron. Actually dumb as fuck.
>want to play stardew Valley and add a few mods
>mainly the auto petter sold at a store with fixed town hall
>It's not on steam workshop
>download a library software that fetches save file locations from pcgamingwiki
>they don't have locations for pirated games
fuck!
Appdata makes sense to me as that is where "app" "data" should go however I do not get the point of the split between local, roaming, etc shit
