It’s not that loud, 15khz is the tone you’re talking about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACGo5pMr8xAbut it’s this but just make sure you don’t have it super loud as its not realistically going to be very loud
      31khz CRTs are silent

        Anonymous

you can hear VGA crts if they are low enough refresh rate, one of the reasons why 75hz was so common on even mediocre ones by the year 2000 as 50-60hz was about the cutoff where it stopped being audible to even the most sensitive ears so having a bit extra made sure.

          Anonymous

Mate that’s 31khz, it’s not audible to humans
The 75hz refresh rate was a thing because of flicker and minimising it

I don’t play Genesis, but N64 and SNES games play well on mine. None of the stretched and blurry look you get from a modern tv taking the signal without conversion. From there, I just adjust the screen settings to what I like. If you buy at walmart or amazon, you will probably get a pile of shit though, so it requires a little research.

This is a problem with not processing the signal with a converter. Like I told the other anon, don’t go to walmart or Amazon to buy a cheap piece of shit converter. If you give a shit about retro games to this degree, you have some spending money and may as well spend a little more on an actual good converter.

Which is why a good converter fixes this problem. I game on my monitor with sixth gen and older games and they don’t have to issues of readability and blurry graphics that modern displays have with a raw signal (if the display even recognizes it in the first place). The only argument aside from the aesthetics of having a crt on your desk is input lag, which is not even a problem for 99% of people.

depends on the game i suppose. if there's no official or fan made 16:9 widescreen support then i'll just play it on 4:3 but i don't think the textures even look bad at high resolution. especially on more stylized-cartoony shit. maybe something like RE4 would look better on a CRT but there's not too much gritty/realism shit like that on gamecube.

worse. the 3D elements will look super high res, but the 2d textures stay low res (unless you use god awful smearing filters).

which in turn make the 3D elements look completely out of place from the rest of the 2D elements

the hyper realistic rendered backdrops in FF7 always looked jarring when compared to the low poly chibi character models, the CRT doesn't hide that. but that being said, sure, the 1% of games that use high prerendered backdrops at 120p probably shouldn't be upscaled

Like the others said it needs degaussing. This is usually caused by wrong kind of magnetisation that directs the electron beam to wrong phospors on the screen so you get colours. If degaussing doesn't fix it the mask may be damaged.

      it's not a hard concept:

old game that was made when CRTs were the only option? chances are it was designed with them in mind.

3d game made during the transitional period or later where LCDs and better technology slowly was replacing CRTs? chances are those games stopped taking advantage of CRT quirks and focused on the fixed pixel displays.

aside from these general rules to follow a CRT really only has a couple of benefits if the games are not optimized for them.
faster response time due to being analog
minor smoothing effect to the image which can aid very low resolutions
true blacks with only the anti-reflective film choice giving it any grey color (i think OLEDs can do similar)
non-fixed resolution making any resolution it can handle look as good as possible. (modern displays look quite soft when not at their native resolution due to fixed pixels)

if it won't budge at all then it was improperly calibrated from factory, quite rare, it should be quite firm fully clamped so rotating it while clamped should be difficult.

it is a common pitfall when you have a crt with a service menu to try and maximize the viewable area when the absolute outer edge is going to show the most issues.

what is really fun is if you do that with game consoles you will find that the snes and genesis are not even centered with eachother so having one absolutely perfect will have the other one being off-center with a blank strip down the side.

the red is red for a reason, your not supposed to or expected to have *all* of it on screen, typically something closer to the red dots is going to give you better results.

                >black bars don't cause burn in on an oled.

black bars will eventually cause noticeable burn-in. The OLED tv has a "pixel refresher" that will compensate for it... until it reached the limit of how much it can overvolt/undervolt the affected pixels, and then burn-in will suddenly start showing up.

the only argument you can make for it "not causing burn in" is because no specific image is being burned into the screen. but that is just semantics. It WILL eventually cause everything in the black-bar area to be much brighter and more vibrant than in the non-blackbar area.

I got an OLED and I use it as a PC monitor and i will never go back to anything else. so dont call me a hater I love the tech. but your statement is false.

No. We may eventually get boutique tvs using a similar looking and feeling technology.

Just a reminder that there is a technology called Laser Phosphor Display that is basically a better CRT without a 100lb lead glass tube. It is self calibrating, can account for burnt out lasers, can easily be made with higher horizontal resolutions than CRTs ever had, is seamlessly tileable, and yet they only sell it as giant video walls for boomer boardroom meetings.
The company is called Prysm. They have a contact form. They have a phone number. They have headquarters.

Maybe the existing models technically aren't as good as the late era high end CRTs but the idea behind it is literally just a better CRT, it has potential if they'd just sell the fricking things to gamers already.

The frick are you talking about? Have you actually used one? Again, it works on the same principle as a CRT, just with lasers activating the phosphors instead of an electron beam. It would look just like a CRT if not better with standard def content and could do multiple resolutions properly just like a CRT monitor. If theres any input lag then its because their engineers are moronic

          They don’t “natively” hook up
          You’ll need a DAC

I live on a shithole were you can get one for "free" if you pay for the local CRT technician to create a frankenstein TV using pieces of broken CRTs he has laying around in his sweatshop.

Don't feel like paying some israelite a triple premium for an old ass CRT, the kind of old used shit that people used to throw out decades ago.

Now post an actual picture of it, as it really is; covered in dust, scratches, cheeto finger prints, gay ass stickers, and your prepubescent cum.

Merely owning it isn't something to be proud of. Show you've taken care of it and then you can brag.

    > try connect pc to old crt tv via converter
    > vomit becuase of flickering and ugly picture
    > broke it to garbage
    > get free budget crt monitor
    > ideal clarity 480p at 120 hz
    > make 1/2 or 1/4 sync in nvidia profiler
    > old 30/60 fps locked games have ideal clarity at 120hz monitor refresh rate without tearing and flickering
    > good

because I had a LG CRT monitor long ago and it caused me eye strain, also it occupied a major fricking portion of any table, I don't want to go back to that trash ever again

I know, but CRT peddlers talk about them as if every CRT out there was as good as Sony's high end ones and that was not the fricking norm at all. It's like saying why do you hate LCDs? They have 240hz refresh rate, 100% RGB coverage, ~3ms response time and great HDR support amd high contrast ratio! Pretending every LCD is the same as those Asus & other companies' premium LCDs.

I honestly don't miss CRT. I don't remember any of the positives it had to offer over modern monitors. It's a romanticized piece of history that only some boomers care about. And even then, you can't blame them for it when they're trapped in their suburb cages. What the hell else is there to liven up their lives?

Imagine the world if it never evolved away from CRTs. Imagine trying to bring a smart phone with you on the bus or trying to play a Steam Deck in bed.

Jokes are jokes but every single one of you would HATE to live in that timeline.

Yeah I grew up with CRTs and I don't miss them at all, same thing I don't get is nostalgia for NES. I had NES as a 6 year old kid and even then I knew that thing was a piece of dogshit and I never looked back.

I bought the exact monitor in OP, the better contrast and lack of bleed was nice I have to admit but it felt somewhat muted by the anti-glare coating it had, the real problem was the horrendous trailing. I was playing thief, an ideal game to notice ghosted images on a dark background and ghost afterimages would persist on the screen for literal seconds, issue easily negated the better contrast. driving an hour and paying for the privilege of having a big heavy piece of garbage laying around my small apartment burned me out on trying again.
Also anyone who tells you there was no reason crts got replaced is full of shit. I tried using it as a work/browsing pc for a laugh and the flicker gave me a headache after 20 minutes.
