Why has nobody made a modern 2D isometric theme park game even though RCT2 is clearly the most popular RCT game?

So you're ok with playing rct2 forever

        Let's put it another way:
What would a new 2D isometric theme park management game bring to the table that isn't already provided by RCT2 or OpenRCT2?

          Anonymous

A new game could add so many new features out of reach of a project like openrct2

            Anonymous

Such as? Genuinely asking. My concern would be that a modern 2D isometric theme park management game would not only be made on a limited budget due to a niche player base, you'd also have to get over the hurdle of it being compared to RCT2, a game that still has fans and players even now.
It's like how strategy games have the curse of being both a niche market, and already served by some of the all time classics which any new game will be compared to.

Better visuals(think of simcity 4 vs 3000), more customizable full featured coaster creation, more complex scenery creation, better path system with curves, idk man the possibilities would be endless.

                Anonymous

Okay, possibilities are endless but your budget isn't, so you'd have to decide what features you have to add. Also whether you recreate everything that's already in RCT2 (recall that it was also built in assembly by one maniac), and who you're going to market it to.

2D game development is way easier than 3D game development and 3D indie theme park games like Parkitect and Indoorlands have been developed so what's stopping a 2D one?

Also merge Zoo Tycoon into the game so I can make a waterslide that finishes in a crocodile pond.

One thing missing from RCT2 is theaters, every theme park has some sort of theater with live actors, with either trained animals or song-and-dance revue.

There was one at Six Flags Fiesta Texas that I can't recall any of except it involved animals and an aspiring actor who thought it was a good idea to use a Shaggy impression the whole time.

There's no real reason why a game has to be pre rendered like this anymore. A game like planet coaster could just have an isometric camera angle option mod and pixelation filter for the same effect. 3D park builder games are just ugly for reasons other than being in 3D.

      Anonymous

Doesn't that take making a bunch of 3D models and then turning them into prerendered sprites? If you're going to all that trouble anyway why not just make the game 3D, especially if you're going to do stuff like have curved paths and more elaborate rollercoaster design?

In fact, after pre-rendering the images, an artist can retouch them as much as they like. They will always be seen from the same angle, so they can add fine detail that considerably improves the original 3D model. Even Sim City 4, which is kind of 3D, has this; if you change the camera angle, you'll see that various elements of the buildings are "broken" because they've been added later by the artists to make the final image more acceptable.
Pure 3D always comes with major limitations, especially in games where each tile can contain a 3D object placed by the player.
