When multi-gorillion dollar companies can't get the masses engaged, I guess the age of MMOs had finally come to an end.

Literally only like 8 MMOs ever have been succesful. The genre was never alive

i doubt it costs that much to keep up to bother going through the headache of shutting down.
gw1 probably has like 50 active players and it's still not shut down after 20 years

It's probably still got some funds from when a million people tried to play it back in the day. Though that well is probably close to drying out now

isnt this shit pvp? how do you play so much on a dead pvp game?

        Anonymous

it has pvp but it's not only pvp. ags released some stats recently and aparently only 20% of players participate in pvp and barely 2% have ever played the top pvp end game content

Maybe that wold change if they added lock-on and aim assist to pvp as well instead of treating the game like a fricking FPS.

If I wanted an FPS then I'd play an FPS, not a melee focused MMO. The game would be better off if they treated it like one.

new world combat is about movement if you enable lock on for pvp that's like 60% of gameplay gone

                Anonymous

Aiming isn't movement, it's a dumb minigame you need to play in order to land your attacks and adds nothing of value. It just makes the game play like shit.

                Anonymous

Don't be dumb, if the enemy has lock-on there's no point for you to kite and change directions. You both might as well just stand there and hit each other and treat the dodge like a .5 second invulnerability skill.

                Anonymous

If that's actually the case then maybe they should have designed the game better instead of making a pseudo shooter.

                Anonymous

That would actually be preferable to the state PvP is in now, just add a proper dodge and make projectiles avoidable, bring back hitstun and make the game a battle for initiative again like it was in the beta. Aiming is totally superfluous and lazy design.

what is it like now? I remember it being a broken piece of shit after devs tried to fix stuff shortly after launch. the economy was broken and there was nothing to do.

        Anonymous

Well I have 4k hours on the game so in my case there's really 'nothing' else to do except complete achievements and territory standings. The devs still release broken updates but they're not as bad as before, the economy can't be broken because they removed the gambling involved in best in slot crafts so everything is pretty cheap anyway.

If you're an actual new player, they completely overhauled the main quest and added a bunch of quality of life features so you can get solid 100 hours out of this game, after that if you're still playing it's because you like the combat and PVP because there's really no endgame.

NTA but it's kinda okay economy wise. A casual player can just do random daily shit and gold will pile up.
Bugs-wise there is nothing gamebreaking, some mob might get stuck inside geometry but overall it's ok.
Perfomance is dogshit. If you're in a crowded area, your fps will drop hard.

What do you like about it?

I like hitting rocks, trees and mobs.
Also chest runs are fun when you do it with like 40-60 people.
I'm at 2.5k hours right now and untill they introduced artifacts I basically never touched PVP but they forced me to do it because the best greatword only drops there and what I did it just join bg's, get minimal score and afk untill the end for pvp exp. Honestly if those morons focused more on casual PVE side of the game, I think it wouldn't have dropped 99% playerbase.

After AGS released the stats that show only 2% of players cared enough to do wars, some shittubers started arguing how wars need rework etc etc, but this is all moronic because what those stats actually show is that people actually don't give a shit about PVP and only want PVE.

PvPgays in MMOs are legitimately moronic.
If people wanted to play a PvP game, why the FRICK you would play an MMORPG? You already have PVP EXCLUSIVE GENRES that exist to fill people's need for a competitive setting. Not against having PvP in MMOs but PvPgays are so delusional and they're often YouTubers pushing for this stuff, because they're likely part of the 1% of players who are interested in it.

Because large scale / world pvp in an MMO provides a dynamic experience which other games fundamentally cannot provide, where the broader context of the game lends additional weight and consequence to the PVP. Unfortunately this is obviously at ends with themepark MMO design but there aren't many alternatives.

For standard small scale MMO pvp there's little excuse but it's mostly a captured audience kind of thing.

            Anonymous

            Exactly.
            PVP in mmos is just
            >here jump through additional hoops and farm all the meta gear before you can play PVP
And then your gear will get reset in the next season/dlc/whatever and you have to do that shit again. People that want PVP will just go play dota/cs/battlefield or whatever because they get to play the second they log into the game.

But again the devs will draw the wrong conclusions because the shittubers are the most local part of community and they will listen to them.
Again I understand why shittubers focus on PVP, it's because "winning 1vs3" or "farming noobs 40 0 in a match" gets you the views while watching someone do the same fricking dungeon 100 times is boring.

It's fricking terrible, especially since the game is only on Steam and the servers cap out at 2k players. It's also a one time B2P, which means that the subscription cope doesn't apply to NW.

MMORPGs handhold too much now. I'm going to go try out EverQuest P99 soon. I originally only joined it after Planes of Power, which massively simplified the world, so I look forward to exploring it without that and avoiding guides as much as possible, see if it can provide a sense of adventure.
