He spawned a whole bunch of copycat chaotic good renegade drow. He's basically patient zero of the 90s equivalent to the tiefling epidemic

Ironically Drizzt doesn’t actually conform to half the stereotypes about him. Like he isn’t a brooding loner who doesn’t get along with anyone and constantly wangsts about being a drow.

He wangsts about being a drow from time to time, but even then it's primarily internal and is less about angst and more him wistfully wishing he didn't have to put up with people intrinsically mistrusting him though fully understanding their reaction.

That's the thing though. Most Drizzt 'clones' out there are made with zero knowledge of who Drizzt is.
The archetype is just so obvious for the race, and so encompassing, while DnD is so limiting at character creation, that similar characters crop up all the time.

That's how memetic telephone works, yes. It's like how all dwarves are Scottish despite nobody really knowing the origin of the meme anymore. Or why firbolds are now cotton candy colored weirdos with cow noses.

Except you get people who've never been exposed to any potential carrying media at any point making Drizzt clones, while everyone knows LotR and can probably point out the character art that comes up in the google search.
Clearly the meme is an exterior thing. It's convergent memery, not a singular meme.

What is? I don’t think the dwarves in Snow White were Scottish, but admittedly it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the movie. But that’s the only other thing I can think of with wide enough exposure.

            See

            >It's like how all dwarves are Scottish despite nobody really knowing the origin of the meme anymore
It was Three Hearts and Three Lions. That's where it came from. And then Peter Jackson was inspired to use it in the movies because he felt that the stalwart nature of the dwarves matches the common perception of the Scotts and that is was appropriate for LotR.
The novel is also credited with coming up with the Law vs Chaos alignment and trolls regenerating.

It's pretty common trivia these days but only because for the longest time people had forgotten or not really cared about the origin point. I'm pretty sure Warcraft was also inspired by Three Hearts and Three Lions, as they had Scottish sounding dwarves at least as far back as WC2 and went on to inspire their own derivatives.

If you were around pre-2010 it wasn't. One of the more popular D&D webcomics in the mid-2000s had two drow melee rangers fighting who gets to be the party's Drizzt.

To my understanding it isn't Drizzt that's the problem, it was the slew of people and teenagers who said "Ooh that's a cool character" and then shamelessly ripped his entire character as their own and then played it subpar.

Drow breasts don't contain mammary glands, they store mana reserves. This is why they don't breastfeed and their kids all grow up as psychopaths.

I read the first few books recently, and they are better written than I thought they would be. The Drow were allowed to be properly evil in a way that wouldn't fly today. And the world isn't a metropolitan melting pot, so Drizzt's race actually affects how people treat him.

Nope, I'm a socialist. I just like 90's fantasy better. It's more cohesive. The escapism aspect of fantasy is harder to achieve if you're trying to shove your modern-day sensibilities into it.

    >Hmm. I wanna make a Drow. They've Elves, a bit different, but not too different for a first character. They're also a fun race with cool lore.
    >Hmm. My character, being Drow, is going to be an evil or ignoble person. This strikes a problem being that the rest of the party are all Good aligned, and will chimp if I'm not. Frick it, I'll make them CN as that's as close as I can get without rustling jimmies.
    >And I'll give them more interesting weapons, befitting their lineage. A Longsword is normal, but doesn't fit the ignoble idea as well.
    >Make them male because I'm not comfortable playing a female character. Now I've also got to deal with the whole misandrist bit.
    >What's a Drizzt?

Drow are both interesting, but give limited character generation flexibility, unless you're willing to break some fairly firm social conventions in TTRPG's.
    >t.anon who's very first character was something of a Drizzt 'clone', except female and considerably more brutal and chivalric, because I didn't want to deal with race based social prejudices that I only found out about at the end of generating the character.

It's a pretty stupid reason to hate him, but he pretty much spawned the cliched copycats of himself, that is of non-evil drow getting the frick out of the Underdark, even his creator, RA Salvator admited he regrets seeing Drizzt being so popular.
I like Drizzt, but copycats are copycats, and only tolerable if they are fully assumed.

The first few Drizzt books are fun enough pop fantasy. A straightforward adventure. Just enough character introspection to be interesting, but never broody and boring. I remember reading all the way up to the book with the cursed sword, Drizzt wearing a mask to look like a normal elf, and Artemis appearing, though that might be mixing the last few books I read. It's been a while.

He's a mary sue. Old school, but still. Being singular exception for an infamously bad race is a trope beaten to death now.

His name is infamous in slavlands, because it translates as vulgar word diarrhea, unironically.
We had to rename him as Dzirt for localisation.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with him personally.
He's literally the meme "my superiority caused some controversy".

People often tend to react to wild popularity itself as bad thing. Wherever it's jealousy or oversaturation doesn't mean much as his omnipresence.

Drizzt is a legend and stuck, unlike even more overpowered and influential characters like Elric.
