Tell me how to run characters that can maintain their health without Sharla to keep them alive? I just made it to Mechonis 2 days ago and my favorite character is Dunban. Followed by Fiora. Followed by Shulk

Riki is singlehandedly enough to keep the party going. Level the frick out of You Can Do It. Riki-Dunban-Shulk or Riki-Dunban-Reyn is a shockingly competent party if you have the tank(s) present properly kitted out.

The combat's pretty on rails from what I remember. I switched up party leaders often to keep things fresh, but they mostly have a clear string of artes that you need to do. Melia's a bit weirder though.

I'm pretty sure Xenoblade was a mmo turned single player half-way through with a rushed combat slapped in. Just watch the cutscenes in youtube and skip it, trust me you won't lose anything by not playing it. In XC2 they refined the gameplay to perfection even if they still missed the target on the sidequests. XC3 so far doesn't seem as good as 2 but play it I guess if you absolutely must.

3 is actually fun before it even finishes showing you its mechanics, even if it's arduously slow to give you everything. 2 really isn't. And I'd argue that the tutorial does a much worse job at teaching you what you actually need to know about 2.

            >3 is actually fun before it even finishes showing you its mechanics
No it's not. It might seen so because you can keep swapping the classes to add variety to the gameplay but that turns boring quickly because you soon realize you're doing only slightly better than the AI, and gets tiresome if you do that every fight. The ouroboros itself doesn't add any new fun mechanic quickly, you have three arts same as any character and a special you rarely use in that form. The chain attacks take more strategy but they also take a long time to execute and you're mostly wasting time by using them every fight.
In 2 it takes a while to introduce combos but if you read the skills and deduce that chaining driver arts is useful you can have fun gameplay pretty quickly by chaining and swapping blades to finish in blade arts.

Every issue you list here is an issue I have in 2, but even worse.
Switching blades is way less consequential than it seems and largely a waste of time if you know what you're doing, and every blade has arts of roughly the same effects per character. I appreciate that they put in the effort of giving everyone something a little different, but I feel like the effort would have been better spent on making the arts stand out as much in 2 as they do in 1 and 3. The lion's share of arts in 2 can be boiled down to whether they have a combo effect, a directional effect, or healing/potions on hit/use. Buffs are largely relegated to automatic stuff done by blades and debuffs are virtually nonexistent outside of blade-specific effects. Meanwhile, 3 makes a point of putting a stance art, equivalent to an aura, on Sena, and giving both the 1-style and 2-style healer a pure healing art and an area-effect buff art. It also has effects like directional crit rate and bleed on your first hero class.

                Anonymous

Switching blades is inconsequential? How do expect to execute combos? There isn't a single blade who can combo two arts. Even if you were to say there are to many blades for the number of weapons (effectively classes in 2) there is still a large number of weapons. You can't just pick your favorite blades and expect to have a dynamic gameplay. Even more so if you're trying to apply the debuff at the end of the combo chain since you also have to be mindful of the blade elements in your party. Of course you need blades for some aspect of the gameplay, that's how the game was designed, but it doesn't mean you don't need to understand the system. You won't enter a battle and the blade apply the 'null shackle blade' debuff by itself. Not even your party member will do that. I'd argue that 3 makes it a little more brainless because you can just swap to the character you want press one button and apply the buff or debuff you desire. Better yet, why not let the AI do it.

                Anonymous

I said "less consequential than it seems". At first you'd think it would solve some of the issues with combat being slow and samey, but no, since most blades' arts feel virtually identical to use. They have the same use cases most of the time, no real reason not to just combo through all of your regular arts constantly as soon as you unlock the ability. This design decision is why debuffs were largely moved off of regular arts and put on blade specials instead.
In theory I enjoy the variety blade specials offer. Matching up where you want to lead a combo with what specific effects you want from the specials you use offers a lot of variety. The issue is that which blades you have is up to gacha, and blades are ridiculously grindy to get up to speed. Are you telling me that, on your first playthrough, you were stopping to train up new blades just because they had an element you needed and blade special effects that played into a combo? I seriously doubt it. Me, I summoned them en masse, ignored everything other than the rares (because why would I invest effort in a generic which would be scaled out of usefulness in a few hours?), and stopped trying to pay attention to anything but element and weapon type because, legitimately, what was the fricking point of trying to strategize around the effects of an individual blade's properties when I was never going to have enough that I could pick blades for both their element and their unique properties?

I did. That's why I mentioned the 'null shackle blade' debuff, because there was one enemy that relied a lot on shackling the blades (Malos/Metsu). Iirc you needed an ice blade for it and the gacha wasn't generous enough to give me a legendary ice blade with the combo arts I wanted. I ended up picking a common ice blade for it. It worked. In 3, some party member or hero would just apply it for me and the most work I would have was to know who would have this art.

Are you telling me you actually lost a fight in 2? Ever? You just heard my strategy. I beat the game with this. Were you playing on that hard mode they added? That was long after I'd already done my playthrough. I'm not sure if the game actually forcing you to pay attention would make me like it less (for having to grind to frick to get specific blades ready for action) or more (for actually giving me an incentive to do more than skirt by).

I did, I didn't like doing sidequests so I was always under-leveled. Side quests is the one thing 3 has done better than 2 so far.

                Anonymous

I mean, fair, 2's side quests were awful. At least 1's stinkers were fairly easy to take and forget about, the ones I did in 2 were all pretty much a mini-story... except with a similar amount of effort applied to them as a mid-tier sidequest from 1. The fact that I'd been to the destination of one of them (the bottom of that spiral staircase type area with... puzzlewood, I think, at the bottom?) and it didn't have a landmark so I had to walk back down there manually to complete the quest REALLY rubbed me the wrong way.
That said, I recall being more or less on level for the entire game. A few levels below the final boss against Malos in the giant robot I forget the name of.

Malos and Akhos at the end of chapter 3 are commonly known as a wall to people who are playing the game the first time because of the driver shackle, new players wouldn’t know that would be inflicted and probably end up dying once or twice to them.

I never knew this, I just kind of blitzed my way through. Shackle Driver wasn't a huge issue for me because I had a ton of healer blades in my party, luck of the draw and all, so whatever got done to anyone while they were shackled I could heal right back up. Are there any other walls I missed?

              >because you soon realize you're doing only slightly better than the AI
holy shit skill issue lmao. If you can't do better than the ai then you are clearly mentally deficient, the ai is terrible at doing anything other than combos and never does cancels going by how slowly they charge the chain attack gauge compared to the player.

I tried it. I'm sure it's a good game, but I couldn't get into it even with all the QoL improvements. Don't be absolutely flabbergasted at what other people find fun. There are people who like doing fetch quests simply for those lore tidbits and updates to the community chart that establish the world. For some people that is enough.

xb1 fetch/kill quests were the best because they were so unintrusive. You just talk to everyone in town stacking them up before you leave and then just go out and explore and you'll automatically complete them along the way, and if you don't who cares, its just a lil bonus exp and money. I was going to kill a bunch of monsters and grab collectibles while exploring the map anyway. They don't make a big deal out of them so you never feel pressured to go out of your way to do them all

Run Shulk/Seven, Reyn and Dunban for the entire game. Control Reyn, max sword drive and blow things up/chunk them super hard before the fight even starts with first strike gems. It's the only way.
