the cover art or the game?
classic rpgs sucked, but nobody noticed cuz they were 14 years old

Well, it's not a straight up reimplementation like OSE or better yet OSRIC but it's also not dirt cheap like BFRP or White Box. For me DCC isn't even about the core rules it's about the D&D compatible supplements, of which there are a lot.

    >level-0 funnels are always a hoot
    >unique and fun magic system

    >hundreds of random tables

    What's not to like?

The gimpy dice but imho that's the only significant drawback, also nice digits quasi-megasatan.

I agree that the weird dice is the main drawback, they do serve their purpose with the dice chain mechanic though. But yeah, they could have probably just not bothered and the game would be mostly the same.

You can easily just give modifiers instead of using the dice chain for actions. The tables, well there are workarounds for that too.

It's like "Teenagers on Reddit explain what early D&D was like: The Game"
It's all memes and bullshit, and not really like early D&D at all. It's like "DUDE YOU CAST A SPELL WRONG YOU GOTTA ROLL ON THE TABLE AND NOW YOUR WIZARD HAS A FROG FOR A FOOT LMAO!
I mean, that can be fun, sure, but it's stupid too.

I only played the Funnels which are the actual good parts

It has some great art, a few decent modules (though many more that aren't) and some good licensed settings.
Don't care about the system itself though.

Because it's based on 3.x which sucked, but nobody noticed cuz they were 14.

    (OP)
Funnels completely dissociate you from your PCs, treating them as an expandable resource. This all but annihilates roleplay and personal investment. Maybe you care for your dead PCs, the GM and the other players won't. This might be a plus for you if you consider all that stuff homosexual shit.
Even if one or two of your characters survives the funnel, they are always at the mercy of the dice and the GM. Expect your most viable or successful character to be dogpiled on by monsters. Generally fosters adversarial GM style.
    lolrandum you die in general
Adventures play like Sierra games. Didn't pick up the item in the side room at the start? Have fun with this practically unwinnable battle with no other way to bypass. Or straight up you're dead.
Designed to make you buy shitty meme dice by Impact Miniatures, who also produce the official tie-in dice set. Yeah, there are digital dice rollers, but they hurt the pretense that we're in 1982.

      >Funnels completely dissociate you from your PCs

Couldn't disagree more. Funnels are like a backstory you actually get to play, and I become very attached to whichever character is lucky enough to survive it.

      >Didn't pick up the item in the side room at the start? Have fun with this practically unwinnable battle with no other way to bypass.

I've played and ran several DCC adventures and never had this problem, what module does this?

Sounds like that guy doesn't play tabletop games, he's just bullshitting "problems" based on video games he's played.

        >I've played and ran several DCC adventures and never had this problem, what module does this?
Sailors on the Starless Sea requires you to use the censer from area E, a sacrifice of a creature (angering the gods of Law) or of items worth more than 500 gp (basically everything you could find in this adventure). Otherwise you face
        >Chaos Leviathan: Init +0; Atk tentacle +6 melee (1d8+2); AC 15; HD 10d10; HP 66; MV 50’; Act 6d20; SP grapple on successful hit (Str DC 20 to escape); SV Fort +10, Ref -2, Will +6; AL C.

The module also uses nearly one page to describe an optional room that a level-0 character has less than 1% of a chance to reach without dying from cold damage first.

I guess our GM must have fudged both those encounters then because I don't remember them being nearly as bad

It's like an unspoken law of the universe that all systems based on 3.X are shit and all games marketing themselves as OSR or some return to what made AD&D AD&D are shit. DCC is the combination of both so it's doubley shit.

Just played my first level 0 funnel Sunday night. Pure kino. Got stuck with an incredibly stickly street urchin. I can't wait.

As OSR projects go, it's one of the better ones.

But OSR as a group is mid, so...

So you think Goodman is lying about his own game? When OSR stuff was the big marketing buzz and usually top seller of the indie RPG space, and everybody and their cousing was labeling totally unrelated shit as "OSR" just to try to pump up sales? Was he lying to try to keep sales down for hipster points, or what the frick is his purpose according to you? Clinton was lying because it wasn't anybody's business but him and his wife, what's Goodman's angle supposed to be?

Unfortunately, Goodman doesn't get to decide. They can claim to be deathcore all day long, but they're still metalcore.

It's not remotely OSR, it's a 3e hack with fake "old school" memes painted on it. Anyone who tries to shove it into the OSR either doesn't know what the OSR is, or doesn't know what DCC is.
          Goodman knows both.

            Anonymous

Yeah Ive been playing it for years and nobody in my group and noboby in the FB community group has ever called it an OSR game. At worst people see it as OSR adjacent. In any case, there are so many D20 spinoff games now that it really doesn't matter. People will find one thay fits their aesthetics and thats it

How’s the roleplay-ability of it? Can you play actual characters and storytelling or is it really just pure “I hit monster?” like the marketing implies?

Yes I am a bit of a story gag but I know people interested in the system.

      Anonymous

You can do that in literally any system, or no system at all.

It's pretty hack n slashy but there's no reason you wouldn't be able to roleplay in it.
