Why is it so weird? Combo based but has no combo meter. Block on neutral that never works.

Why is it so weird? Combo based but has no combo meter. Block on neutral that never works. Moving forward and backward at a snail pace which requres you to always dash instead. Same inputs that yield different moves when ducking or during standing up animation. Inputs that require you to roll your fingers over the buttons instead of pressing them in succession or together. Characters that are not consistent whether it's their left punch or right punch is a stronger attack. Street Fighter nailed all these years before, so what's the point? Being different for the sake of being different?

Wow, and? What's the point in reading how many hits you land anyway? Neutral block is there as an auto feature, just press back. Movement is fast if you're good at it, Tekken is supposed to be played at close distance, not running away to throw hadokens.
    >Inputs that require you to roll your fingers over the buttons instead of pressing them in succession or together.
Yeah, much worse than 360 motion and motions like "Charge , K".
    >Characters that are not consistent whether it's their left punch or right punch is a stronger attack.
…And? Tekken has very different moves for every character. But there's a lot of universal stuff there too.
    >Street Fighter nailed all these years before
Only thing SF "nailed" is going back in forth in cr.MK range.

I mean, you except a 90s japanese fighting game to be based on a general SF2 like scheme. KoF is more like that.

Bud, seriously, did you just discover 3D fighters yesterday? All these things are just a given in Tekken, you get used to them within a week.
        > mean, you except a 90s japanese fighting game to be based on a general SF2
There's 2 vastly different breeds of fighters: one based on SF2, usually referred to as "2D", and one based on VF, usually called "3D". There are sub-breeds in 2D, like SF2-based games (eg Samurai Shodown, KoF, etc.) and later "anime fighters"/"air dashers" (Darkstalkers, Marvel, DBFZ, GG, the list goes on), but that's beside the point.
The point is, VF had an (almost) completely different approach to everything, as if SF didn't exist. It didn't have cancels, mostly relied on directional inputs for attacks and button combinations (like eg df+PK) instead of quarter circles etc., gave characters a big list of possible moves / combos instead of few specials / supers, made jump virtually useless, allowed OTG attacks, and so on. It's just a different game from the ground up.
Tekken is based on VF, it was basically a VF ripoff at first, but a more "fun" version of it. It doesn't follow it to a t (having no button for block and using 4 buttons instead of 3), but it's just a very different game from SF, you won't find most SF "conventions" here.
You could as well complain that sweep doesn't knock down, crouching kick isn't cancelable, Jin's dragon punch has no invincibility, you can't jump over opponents to cross them up, etc.

This has always been my main gripe with this kind of game. Feels like you're fighting on a glue trap or something, movement is so limited.

Tekken is supposed to be this way, backdashing / wavedashing is made hard deliberately because the game emphasizes close range and sidestepping instead. The fastest / best attacks have fittingly short range in general. You can check a vid like this https://youtu.be/aZKFxnddMPQ?t=76 to see how movement can be used on high level.
2D fighters have no side stepping and in general have more range / speed on attacks, they are far more centered on moving in / out as attacks can sometimes cover even the whole screen (projectiles). Street Fighter always focused on footsies, and you can see cr.MK plays big role in it because if how much range it covers (and you can combo off of it, which would be pretty weird for Tekken). other games like KoF focused on fast airborne movement, whereas Marvel allowed you move all over the place.

It's one of the series that are just better post-retro so personally I don't see much of a point investing too much time in the retro ones. I guess the cover is cool and there is nostalgia though

Tekken 2 has VERY slow VERY punishable animation, it's a totally different beast from the rest of the series.
Tekken 3 has a fun speedrun category where you try to unlock everything in 2 hours except Dr Boskonovitch (that was born out of tradition of playing the game on an empty memory card)

The same can be said about every other fighting game, except SSF2T and 3rd Strike.

I know people will autistically screech it isn't a fighting game to cope, but everyone knows there is still a lot Melee has going for it compared even to Ultimate, Soul Calibur 2 is also still the best SC now that they ruined 4 with patches and you can make a case for DOA Ultimate/Extreme whatever

KoF XIII is not quite retro, but XIV-XV were very dumbed down and miss half of what made KoF good. There's still huge crowd in 98/02, these can be rightfully considered best along with XIII, but the latter has absolutely horrendous online.
Samsho V Special is objectively the best one in the series.

Why is 5s better than 6?

Actually haven't played 6 so it might be better, but the very fact that it has online with rollback (both Fightcade and official Steam release) is already enough. Not many people played 6 to begin with, it released in 2005 on PS2 (2006 in America), even today when Atomiswave emulation is real not many want to play it.

It's just the case of T7 becoming this good after 8 years of updates. Historically, every post-T3 Tekken game had its load of broken bullshit with T4 and T6 being especially bad. T5DR was the closest to being a competitive standard but releasing it first as a portable PSP title and then as a downloadable title with past-gen graphics next year early in the PS3 lifetime killed it mainstream adoption. Thus people being nostalgic for Tekken 3 is nothing special. Even online polls tell the same.
