What they really mean is they want every level to be connected like Dark Souls.

        >No one can ever properly describe how Nioh has bad level design
I can. There are dead ends that don't make any sense and most of the levels look the same. The endgame in 2 has some standouts but it is still plagued by dead ends and a lot looking the same.
To explain it by comparison, it would be like if all of Dark Souls was only variations on undead burg and darkroot with maybe one final level in anor londo

          >There are dead ends that don't make any sense
How do they not make sense. Unless you're gonna complain about locked doors or something?
          >and most of the levels look the same
Disagree. maybe 10% of the levels across both games look very samey but the rest have their own quirks and distinguishable features and how does levels looking similar = bad level design?

This is exactly what I mean. You don't really have a criticism of it. Again I don't know how dead ends "don't make sense" or why that's a bad thing. Why does every path in the game have to lead somewhere? It's not like levels will take you down a long path just to have nothing, most dead ends are like 5 second detours.

            Anonymous

            >How do they not make sense. Unless you're gonna complain about locked doors or something?
The flow of a level naturally draws you toward certain things but then wreckage or a rock blocks it, even worse in optional missions sometimes. That one thing complain about DS2 with that one archway that is easily climbed? Nioh 2 has tons of that and it bugged me way more than DS2 since it happened much more often.
            >Disagree. maybe 10% of the levels across both games look very samey but the rest have their own quirks and distinguishable features and how does levels looking similar = bad level design?
Not at all, most (especially any that takes place in a village/war camp which is probably most of the game) look basically the same and are all wrecked too. Some have good gimmicks that are memorable but as for the level design - I don't remember a single level layout when I play unlike say a souls game

        Anonymous

I'd actually say the opposite: the levels are pretty good with lots of shortcuts, hidden paths and varied encounters.
however exploring levels is a total waste of time thanks to diablo loot

My main complaint with nioh levels is that 90% of them is some variation of ruined/burning village, cave or castle. They also almost exclusively take place at night so everything is always dark.

      Anonymous

I wouldn't say fundamentally, because most of those issues are problems related to stats rather than the actual gameplay, so they're much easier to tweak and change.
The core of Nioh is pretty good in my opinion, and what holds the games together despite all the jank around it.

I don't know what the point of the game is. All the stuff souls is known for, adventure, exploration, atmosphere, great levels, cool bosses, etc are all dogshit in Nioh. The crazy high-end combat of Ninja Gaiden and DMC far surpasses Nioh too. The game inhabits this weird middle ground between the two, which ultimately falls apart as it actually turns into fricking Path of Exile, where you're getting two shot and two-shotting bosses.

      Anonymous

Its closer to NG than souls, it has influences of both. But in the end it is its own thing, Nioh gives you fast paced combat with a lot of variety and technical stuff, the mechanics are addicting

        Anonymous

I found it was the opposite. It did neither thing it sets out to do well, but managed a mediocre mishmash of both, not helped by the fact you play the game effectively twice per difficulty due to optional bosses. After the initial run, it just turns into Path of Exile as the interaction turns off. You might be right in it has an addictive quality, but after playing it through all the difficulties, I'll never play another Nioh game again, even if it's free.

Nioh is a much better action game than Ninja Gaiden, especially when it comes to bosses. There is actual weight and skill in the combat with stance switching and ki pulsing, not to mention guardian spirits/yokai form, yokai attacks, magic, ninjutsus, etc.

        Anonymous

        I had a different experience I guess.
Both games have much worse bosses than the later souls games. Nioh 1 NPC bosses are absolutely abysmal, frankly, with the exception of Kelly. I don't know if the second one improved on the NPC bosses, but I'll never play it, and none of the Nioh 1 npcs were half as good as fighting Isshin or Maria. I also plowed through all 5 difficulties, literally every mission, by mashing upper light kusurigama and barely pulsing. I didn't even know about changing mods on weapons or the prestige points, and polished off abyss with like hundreds of unspent points, barely pulsing, mashing one move, and almost never died.

          Anonymous

          >I don't know if the second one improved on the NPC bosses
played it recently and kinda, they have some distinct qualities, but they are mostly still slowly whittling down the stamina bar or bursting it down with none of the pace or rhythm of something like sekiro

No you FRICKING IMBECILE. Just because it works doesn't mean that's all you can or should do. Video games are meant to be FUN. If you go through a game that gives you a ton of tools to kill an enemy and you decide to only use one attack as your exclusive strategy, that doesn't mean the games combat is bad or boring it means YOU are bad and boring.

Having fun and getting good at Nioh is learned how to use your moveset to more effectively kill enemies faster which means doing more than rolling and pressing heavy attack in heavy stance

DMC has better gameplay, frankly. It's smoother, faster, the cancelling is more generous, and it's way more swag. I can put on a clinic in dmc4/5, but Nioh only gets 1 move out of me

Unironically a skill issue. The combos exist in Nioh, you’re just too stupid or lazy to learn how to do them and cry that it’s bad game design.

Play Dual Swords, if you seriously want that FRC option. It's not the game's fault you never dabble in the systems outside a few options the game gives you and then drop it for a shinier new toy.

I have 281 and i get a lot of stuff that's happening here. Seems like you spent most of that 300 hours grinding, instead of interacting with the combat system. It's a fricking combo MAD, not everything in that shit is supposed to be optimal or "high level" just showy and doing a bunch of fun stuff that the combat and engine allows (such as quick stepping instead of dodging projectiles with Tiger Running and speed buffs, along with other assorted silly shit.
                >This is not what the game normally looks like
Yeah, but it showcases all the stuff you CAN pull off, optimal gameplay in most situations (depending on build) looks very different. Anyone who has spent even getting to longer NG rounds would notice that there would be little point in trying to pass this off as viable gameplay when they're on +9 penance.

The ki Pulse skill meme must stop. It's like a 30f window to be successful and like a 10f window for perfect execution. All that happens is it becomes an arbitrary and automated press and it's really janky. I don't know why they decided to use this as a skill mechanic instead of like a frc/just-frame mechanic, where the timed button press gives you a cool attack or fancy option

Disliked by soulsbabs because mechanically too difficult. Disliked by proper action junkies because it doesn't come close to a ng2 or dmc3.

dungeon looter doesnt fit this type of game. Often times, less is better.
Personally I have no problem with the linear level design but the loot system and crafting and other shit is just overwhelming and boring.

It fits Nioh more than other games because it's mission based

if nioh had a curated gear system instead of dice roll for stats it would be crowned king and fromsoft might actually get nervous enough to do something new with souls. The diablo gear harms the game so much that it puts normies off, and leaves midwits questioning whether or not they fricking suck(they do) or if theyre just undergeared(they are) or levelled the wrong shit(they did)

Ronin simplifies the loot system it's probably more accessible for normalgays.

Nioh loot is brain-dead simple, at least in 1. It's about on par with like Diablo 1/2

No man, it wouldn't. Souls are primarily an atmospheric adventure games. Nioh is total dogshit as an adventure game and has zip for atmosphere

If you dislike Nioh or refuse to play Nioh because of loot, you are literally room temperature IQ. I'm not saying I like the loot system and there's a lot of criticisms towards it but ultimately it's a non-issue. Literally it's a non-issue. If you equip the highest number gear, you will have no issues and the game gives plenty of easy ways to sell shit you don't want, you can even have the options to not pick up loot below certain rarity.

If you're too stupid to figure this out and easily ignore it, you are just straight up stupid and don't deserve to be playing such a good game in the first place if the thing stopping you is just a fricking list of items.

      Anonymous

I get disliking the games because of it. I like it when items I find change my moveset or are huge gamechaning things rather than just giving me a higher number, it's why I don't care for MMOs either. I will always prefer dark souls making pick ups more exciting than just having skill points

        Anonymous

That's not why most people hate nioh's loot. And it's also kind of silly anyways because Nioh's movesets are already much deeper and complex with skill trees giving you access to even more stuff, with you being able to customize what you have. Nioh doesn't need shit that changes your moveset. Technically tonfa's do have something like that though anyways.
        >I will always prefer dark souls making pick ups more exciting than just having skill points
This isn't dark souls and this game is not formatted like dark souls. Also, dark souls items have their own problems where just because an item is technically unique doesn't mean it has much value. There is a ton of loot in dark souls that is either just shit and never worth using or is completely irrelevant to your current build. Often the items you find in a souls game will be stuff that ultimately has no value to you, other than a handful of souls if you sell it.

it has an actual skill ceiling. millions of "le hardcore gamers XD!" get filtered by games with actual combat depth because they think beating shit souls makes them good at games.

You mean skill floor. A skill ceiling means there’s an upper limit on how good you can be.

Unironically, if you look up a lot of discussion of nioh 1/2 you will hear so many people say "AS A SOULS VETERAN" and then say the game is super hard (even though it really isn't even without gitting gud at ki management).

    >Nioh 1 NPC bosses are absolutely abysmal, frankly, with the exception of the one boss that is so fricking easy you can annihilate it blindfolded first attempt

You're doing a piss poor job disproving the theory that the only people who dislike the game are severely mentally disabled and have a bad case of skill issue.

      Anonymous

I beat all 5 difficulties with like less than 30 deaths using 1 move, including all optional missions. I can't remember how deep into the abyss I got before I got bored.

Yes. It's piss easy. I hand a handful of deaths on Umibozo, than basically none until the DLC bosses, and once I figured out my build and grinded the shit out of it, it was one-shots for the rest of the difficulties

    "quantity over quality"
this was the singular thing on the devs' minds

it has probably the single worst loot mechanics in action RPG history
dire lack of enemy variety where you fight the same 5-ish enemies a million times
    crap level design
repetitive filler side missions that take place in the main missions levels
you have customizable weapon moves where 80% of the moves are useless, clan rankings, weapon mastery, a frickton of achievements etc.
very few memorable bosses or enemies
    shit story and characters

it's a 3/10 game and all of those 3 points come from being a soulslike and copying a better dev team
the sequel didn't improve a single fricking thing either, just added even more bloat and grind
Wo Long was a total dud too for mostly the same reasons

      >it has probably the single worst loot mechanics in action RPG history
      You can't describe why. Funny.
      >dire lack of enemy variety where you fight the same 5-ish enemies a million times
How is this quantity over quality, it's literally the opposite. Most enemies in Nioh are more complex than majority of other 3d action enemies, including those from ninja gaiden or other action games like DMC.
      >crap level design
You wouldn't be able to elaborate.
      >repetitive filler side missions that take place in the main missions levels
Wow an action game gives you more missions to fight stuff in. Shocker.
      >you have customizable weapon moves where 80% of the moves are useless, clan rankings, weapon mastery, a frickton of achievements etc.
First part is just pure lack of skill. The rest is fluff i'll agree
      >very few memorable bosses or enemies
      Completely opinionated (but also wrong).
      >shit story and characters
Not the focus of the game so irrelevant.

      Now get better bait.

I prefer wo long and SoP, but nioh's pretty good. I had lots of fun playing 1/2 on my ps4.
My big issue with them came from the forging systems really, not that it's fixed in the other games, but I liked their combat more and felt like you could more easily push past your shit being less than optimal that way.
Nioh it felt much less like I was able to overcome the stat wall.
