Why do you like Enemy Within but hate XCOM 2? Doesn’t make sense
Because EW is great. It certainly has its problems, as every game does, but EW + Long War + a few minor QOL mods and balance tweaks in .inis is without hyperbole one of the greatest gaming experiences ever possible.
2 on the other hand is utter garbage.
Long War Of The Chosen, I've done it all Vanilla and otherwise, and no matter what mods you add to this game it is complete dog shit.
What QOL and ini tweaks, anon? Genuinely curious because I'm hankerin' for another playthrough.
Did you play Long War Rebalance? I appreciate their attempt to fix both the vanilla and LW issues.
>appallingly bad
>complete trash
>utter garbage
>what were they thinking?
>200+ hours of playtime
Hm...
EW was much easier and he felt good about beating it.
He could not beat XCOM 2 so to protect his ego he claims the game is bad and not him.
>no guys the game that literally cheats to make you hit more shots and the aliens hit less and gives you capeshit tier overpowered soldiers that can solo half the map is actually harder
xcom 2 does the opposite, it literally fudges rolls against you
Proof?
Holy fuck actually filtered by fucking XCOM 2
Just how fucking braindead are you LMAO
If your going to troll you need to at least put some effort into making it less obvious.
>overpowered soldiers
There is no build in 2 that is as universally powerful as the base sniper in EU and EW gives you mimetic skin after half a dozen missions, at which point the game might as well be over because enemies literally cannot touch you after that.
Hard turn limits are lazy, but there needs to be some method to disincentivize overwatch crawling and they do that. There is a serious problem with the random level/pod generation making those turn limits too tight on harder difficulties, but turning on the second wave option to double the limit fixes it without letting you totally cheese maps again.
Not the guy you're talking to, but the problem with Xcom 2 is that it totally changed the tone of the series (including OG Xcom and Terror of the Deep, which I've also finished). Xcom 2 is basically a scout/assault rush on every mission aside from the bases. Instead of carefully picking your way through the levels, terrified of all the AYY pods you're probably going to aggro, you have such a tight turn limit you have no choice but to be ultra aggressive and maximize engagement.
There's also little to no opportunity to salvage a sub-optimal strategy. You might survive, but you'll run out of turns regardless. It's a cheap game design tactic that harkens to the earliest days of gaming. How do you make a game harder when you have no clue how to do that? Simple! Put in a time/turn limit.
It's lazy. It's bad. And It's not Xcom. Xcom 2 is not hard; it's just brain-dead.
It's more than the turn limit. Timers are gay and stupid to be sure, but they are not really why the game is bad.
You can prove this pretty easily by just modding out the timers and increasing the size of the pods etc. Wonder of wonders, even with all that and no timers, the game still sucks.
>Xcom 2 is not hard
It should be mandatory to post Steam achievements with posts like this.
All you had to say was you can't Overwatch crawl every mission lmao
Translation: I'm shit and can't adapt or work under pressure, I liked the first game because it was simple and easy and I could do the same thing every turn ever mission (overwatch creep) all the way through
not that anon
I liked XCOM 2 and I'm not an overwatch crawler but I really enjoyed the idea of setting up an assault
starting missions in stealth is a cool idea but the timers and pulling pods seems kind of weird. there could have been an added layer of depth if stealth could be preserved by killing an ayylmao same-turn with some sort of "stealth" weapon. maybe a mod that trades damage for the ability to alpha strike? idk
just seemed to me that they had some fundamentally iffy ideas and then went all-in on them instead of spending more time at the concept stage
still fun but I have to agree with the other anon that modded enemy within was more fun
and before you say it yeah I know EW had pods too
but the stealth system seemed poised to replace the pods with something a little deeper and instead it just made it more obviously poor
Overwatch creeper.
I do really hate replacing the "secret international defense project" thing in X-Com with a really lame resistance fantasy. But to be honest I mostly don't like Xcom 2 because I was too sick of the activated pod formula after playing Long War rather than it actually being a bad game
Are you playing the vanilla version or War of the Chosen? With the update it's pretty fuckin' good, aside from the RNG nature of developing the ship that can fuck you over.
Why are you so appallingly black?
>thing bad
>"why?"
>uhhhh I dunno hurrrr it just bad durrrrr I don't have a single functioning brain cell
Because the game will literally fudge your rolls if you're doing well. The game will literally force you to miss shots and have your guys get one shot killed more often if your playing well. Look it up, it's true.
meds
Wrong, retard. The only time the game cheats it does so FOR YOU and only on the lower difficulties. That means giving you a hidden aim bonus if you've missed several shots in a row, steering enemies away if there are already some on the field, and buffs if a bunch of your squad has died.
The poor game is literally cheating for you and you're still crying it's too hard lel
>on lower difficulties
Okay bro, not everyone plays on easy mode LIKE YOU
google it gay boy
>not everyone plays on easy mode LIKE YOU
I play on Legend Ironman. Take one glance at the .inis and realize you're an idiot.
>th-the game is conspiring against me!
It's conspiring for you and you still suck lol
It's ok but I hate the fucking Chosen and how they reek of someone's OC donut steel. Human beings are getting burned, juiced, chest-bursted, mind chipped, mutated, ground up into burger patty, basically the whole "kill Argonians" meme - while these blue fucks are making edgy little quips and lame banter like it's a cartoonish capeshit movie.
It's like there was a civil war between the devs on what the tone of the games should be and the fags won and made Chimera Squad. XCOM 3 never I guess.
The Clone Wars game the all-stars are making will be the new premier strategy game
I’d rather XCOM die than it get further pozzed.
Xenonauts 2 seems to divide opinion but I thought the demo was really good. Will probably be my alien killing game for near future
I really liked Xenonauts, the dismal cold war aesthetic made it feel more grounded and hopeless compared XCOM original + remake's superhero comic vibe. I haven't kept up with news on 2 because it's EA but I hope they maintain that
The only thing I hate about XCOM2 is fighting Warlock, because summoning ghosts every 2 or 3 turns is slow boring and annoying.
They need to address early game difficulty. it's bizzare how easy the game gets once you get proper gear
The second mission is unironically the hardest in the game.
>shit squaddies, some probably injured from Gatecrasher
>shit gear, maybe one flashbang you need to save for a sectoid anyway
>shit sitreps like hack the device when you weren't given a specialist, or neutralize the enemy field commander in the tunnels, or that one sabotage transmitter mission in the sewers where the nodes are legitimately hidden in random corners instead of placed along your way
>if you fail you don't get an engineer and basically can't do ANYTHING with your base for the entire month, then are permanently behind for the whole game
Shit's fucked. I've beaten LI twice and most of my restarts have been because of the second mission. Everything else is pretty easy but that.
>fucking gatecrasher
>second mission
>first haven assault
the top 3 hardest missions all happen in the first month, it's astounding how the difficulty curve is so reversed in this game.
The haven assaults aren't even that difficult, just annoying and literally broken without a mod. Civilians will just sit in one place, won't move or run at all, and die instantly when targeted.
I swear to god gatecrasher is the hardest mission in the whole game because I feel like if even 1 enemy gets the chance to shoot at your soldiers they are as good as dead and then you lose one possible squaddie at start
also once I had enemy reinforcements spawn at second mission and the enemies were 2 stun lancers and priest at fucking second mission holy shit
Gatecrasher is way easier in WotC if you bring a Templar along. Guaranteed 4 damage is a game-changer.
>2 stun lancers and priest at fucking second mission
This ended my first ironman. I did beat them somehow, but it took so long I failed the mission and all my guys were wounded.
I don't get it. How did they screw up on the difficulty curve so much? They had so many ways to crank it up as you go along, but from bluescreen rounds +5 damage to sabotage AVATAR covert ops you get ahead of the aliens and they never really catch up. Firaxis back then was clearly capable of keeping the difficulty spaced throughout the whole game, they did it for EU/EW, but just completely stuffed it with this one. Why?
>from bluescreen rounds +5 damage
Feels good man, I fucking love Sharpshooter Gunslingers in XC2. Being able to fire pistols a billion times in a single turn is fucking great. I know it's really overpowered but it's so satisfying.
>1 turn
>shoot 1 bro once
>shoot all bros once
>shoot one bro 3 times
>25 bluescreen bonus damage on a robot, not including base damage or armor shredding
It feels great, but still, who signed off on it? Not even a -5% accuracy or -1 damage to normal enemies? Still though, the best part of XCOM 2 WOTC is the wide variety of options available to the player. There's 8 different classes with wide variation in ability depending on chosen skill, tons of different equipment to choose from, wide variety ot experimental ammo/nade/weapon and a decent gun attachment system. Still- I enjoy UFO Unknown, EW and 2 but 2 is the least good game among them.
blue moving and overwatch every turn is not "smart tactical play". Completing a mission is only a skillful endeavor if you did so in a reasonable timeframe. Also there's literally an option before you start the campaign to double ALL mission timers if you want to turn that on, the game gives you that option without any modding necessary.
Tried A Better Advent mod? It adds better ayy ai and upgraded enemies as you progress, making it into a proper arms race against the aliens right up until the end.
No but I should. I was thinking about starting a playthrough anyways
It's just really, really repetitive.
>turn limit
>still $80 even though its an 8 year old game
>expansion is also $80
>just to get a game that's essentially a 1:1 copy of the first game
>just to get a game that's essentially a 1:1 copy of the first game
Sadly that is not true, it's much worse.
>turn limit
Christ, you people seriously have trouble with this?
Does "X is bad design" equate to "I had trouble with X" in your 70 IQ mind?
I never had trouble with it. Why does it make you so angry?
>I never had trouble with it
How is that even remotely relevant to the discussion whatsoever?
>cry about game mechanic
>someone asks why
>"that's not relevant!"
Whether you "had trouble" with it or not is totally irrelevant to whether or not it is a bad mechanic, yes. What are you not understanding?
Why is it a bad mechanic? I did ask you that and you ignored it to shart your dick and balls off over nothing.
XCOM is at its best when you're frantically improvising trying to salvage a fucked situation. The turn limit is excellent at organically making you put yourself into those scenarios, and the only people who whine about it are overwatch crawling shitters. Learn to play.
>whining about ""overwatch crawling""
looks like someone got filtered by EW. Was it Mutons that made you give up?
Nah, I beat EW but vastly prefer 2. EW is like rote, solved machine chess whereas 2 is actually fun and something different every time. Turn timers, procedural maps, three-way faction battles, intra-turn enemies, destructible environments -- it's pure chaos and it actually takes some wits.
>NOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T INSULT MY TACTICAL GENIUS PLAY OF... PRESSING Y 500 TIMES
kek ya love to see it.
This
As someone that's cleared both LW and LW2 on legendary, the only people that hate on nuXcom2 can't handle the timers, intra-turn enemies and just utter chaos that can easily cost you your A-team in just a few turns.
It's non-stop balls to the wall all the way to the end. Your lucky break will get countered by a some bs at some point. And you better prepare for it.
fuck off and let me play how I want to
at the least it should be an option you can enable/disable for different playthrus
i play this shit to get comfy and gradually win through careful tactical play, not to retard-yeet straight across the map because I have 5 turns to kill everything or I automatically lose
So you panic and go ape over a timer that's usually five turns longer than it should be?
>careful tactical play
>overwatch
>overwatch
>overwatch
>overwatch
>overwatch
Anon have you tried using characters that can attack multiple times a turn? A Grenadier that can blast cover, remove armor plating, hit and debuff multiple enemies at once and blast things out of the sky? Or a sharpshooter that can wipe an enemy from across the map? Or a specialist that can hijack enemies and make them fight on your side? Overwatching and countering all the time is just.... bleh.
>a sharpshooter that can wipe an enemy from across the map
Accuracy actually falls off with range in 2 instead of granting infinite accuracy, so they couldn't do that even if the maps weren't forcing you to move them out of their nest constantly.
>fuck off and let me play how I want to
Literally admitting "I think the game is bad because it challenges me and I hate being challenged!".
>i play this shit to get comfy and gradually win through careful tactical play, not to retard-yeet straight across the map
Anon doing the exact same minimum risk move every single turn is not tactical in the slightest, it's actually quite braindead and simple. Beating missions under sub-optimal, unpredictable circumstances requires actual strategic ability, which you clearly lack, so you downplay it as "retard yeeting straight down the map" to cope with being unable to beat it despite insisting how easy it is.
I REALLY enjoy doing difficult missions in this game but because the campaign is so long most missions just end up feeling like a chore and not actually difficult. If you are winning you will keep winning unless you throw out of boredom and then you're so far behind in tech that it just feel fucking pointless to continue. I feel like I would really like mod that makes the game much shorter/faster or maybe add turn limits into every mission.....
>the campaign is so long
The normal campaign isn't that long even if you put off story missions until you tech everything up, pretty sure you can beat it in like six months if you rush. The problem is that the hardest difficulty forces you to play marathon mode where everything is stretched out like four or five times longer and that's just a tiresome slog.
You have to play this with Long War of the Chosen to make it gud
long war unironically makes it worse its extremely tedious and annoying
Why do you keep making this same thread on a daily basis?
Link the definitive workshop collection for this so I can 100% it
how can i stop getting filtered by this game? needa tips
High ground, full cover, overwatch, make good use of your stealth sections
It's not that hard
Play on rookie till you get your first armor then switch to veteran and commander when it gets easy.
I love this game.
Same, I keep reinstalling it and creating the Foxhound squad in the character creator.
I've done runs with the Resident Evil cast and the Mass Effect cast.
>use mouse to play
>try to redirect target
>it auto completes to first target chosen
It happens probably 1/10 times and it's so annoying.
>Play XCOM 2
NO IM PLAYING GEARS TACTICS BECAUSE THE BATTLEFIELD INFORMATION REPRESENTATION IS SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY!!!
THEY NEED TO REMAKE XCOM WITH GEARS TACTICS' INFORMATION REPRESENTATION IF I AM EVER TO PLAY IT
XCOM HAS A GREAT ENVIRONMENT AND STORY BUT IT MARS IT BADLY WITH POOR INFORMATION REPRESENTATION. IVE BEEN SPAMMING ABOUT GEARS TACTICS EVERYWHERE I COULD TO MAKE THEM UPDATE THAT SHIT. I WANT TO PLAY XCOM BUT NOT IN ITS CURRENT STATE BY ANY MEANS. YOU SHOULD ALSO SPAM THIS TO GET THEM TO UPDATE THOSE OLD GAMES SO THEY ARE PLAYABLE
I refuse to believe GEARS did Xcom better than xcom.
Granted, Fireaxis did that new marvel game, but microsoft is kinda shit recently + Splash damage doesn't have experience in this + the steam reviews are also kinda shit.
TL;DR: State your case you retard
XCom 2 sucks because of everything except for the gameplay.
It never ceases to amazed me how well this game exposes shitters. The timers are extremely reasonable and the only reason anyonr struggles with them us because they are trash at the game.
>tfw never timed out even once in X-Com 2
>confused how everyone was buttmad at timers
>Reapers now let you push even further to avoid starting the timer thanks to their stealth being able to see pod visibility range and Skirmishers are literally built to hit multiple enemies in a pod so others can clean up
Did people really spend the entirety of the first game on overwatch? I'd only use overwatch if I knew an enemy was going to charge forward at the squad.
They would blue move into overwatch literally everywhere.
Yeah. Quite a few people here couldn't beat the game any other way.
I don't know anon. I loved eu/ew but cant stand to finish a single xcom 2 campaign. If I had to guess why, I think I just prefer the level layouts and general aesthetic of eu/ew. I don't want to say that xcom 2 just isn't as cool, but that's really what it amounts to for me. There's just something horrendously jarring about going from a global anti-alien task force to quirky freedom fighters that pose for a poster shot after every mission.
xcom was never a global alien taskforce. you're like a dozen dudes taking pot-shots at tiny installations. the whole premise is retarded.
That's a fair criticism, but you can at least mod out a lot of the cringeworthy shit. The gameplay is miles ahead of EW, but the plot reads like horrible fanfiction and it lacks the atmosphere the first game had. It's why I rank EW as a better game even though I'd rather replay 2.
It's bad but you can't say why it's bad. Don't even mention timers because no one likes them but that doesn't magically make the game bad, because you can just mod them out. Filtered.
Turn-based strategy games become unbelievably fucking boring when you're given all the time in the world to set up and make sure you only ever have to take engagements in safe, optimal conditions, and it's even worse when doing so gives you a massive advantage like it did in EU so you basically have to do it unless you want to make the game ten times harder.
People have recognised this for decades which is why even games like Fire Emblem 1 on NES use time pressure to create anti-turtling incentives on most maps. Too many people are just neurotic messes that start literally shaking the second a game gives them any sort of deadline. It's insane the number of people who won't even touch games like Fallout 1 because they see the 150 day limit and start having a panic attack then and there.
I don't understand what kind of mental retardation causes people to have such negative reactions to timers. Must be the same motherfuckers who drag out all my M:TG games to 30 minutes instead of the 5-10 they should take. And the timers are always absurdly generous, rarely more than symbolic.
Gears tactics replaced that game for me, xcom died after enemy within.
I liked it, but the Switch version was kinda buggy. Glad I pushed that adventure energy thing back to wence it came, felt good.
ok so I've tried to like this game acouple of times, but where I could defeat xcom EW and original within a few tries on hardest difficulty, this one kicks my butt.
I want to try again, because I liked the builds and the AH NULD voice mod.
So how do I start the metagame? I max out intel or something? Kinda like how you max out radar dishes in the first reboot?
I got completely OWNED by the retaliator snake boss from the chosen DLC and I really want to give this another try.
So, the secret is that when you start a WotC game, you do NOT click "integrate DLC" if it's your first time through.
The Alien Hunters DLC is late-mid game content, but if you integrate the DLC, it'll skip the story mission and activate the bosses automatically fairly early on.
As for the meta, I dunno just wing it like I do. Worked out fine for me on modded classic ironman.
i was getting my ass beat until someone told me i didn't need to rush facilities. you can let the avatar project max out, then it'll give you 2 months to reduce progress. essentially you can ignore the avatar project until the bar is full and do the first blacksite + early avatar project missions with a fully geared megasquad vs. rushing it b/c you're afraid of the progress bar filling and losing b/c you're under prepared
EU/EW was very humanity fuck yeah, and just a lot cooler. I don't know really know how to articulate it but nu-xcom 2's vibe just didn't work for me. Everything about EW ruled. Just something as small as that first cutscene of an interceptor shooting down a UFO (which may as well have been humanity's best aircraft taking down an alien honda civic) with everyone in the control room clapping and cheering gets me rock hard. But xcom 2 was just gay.
For me it was when I build my first firestorm going toe to toe with an alien battleship after having to constantly monitor interceptors was cool as fuck, shame the ground mission kept crashing.
Ill give you the benefit of the doubt and agree on XCOM 2 sucking but WOTC wqs so much better just like EU was meh but EW was a vast improvement. The additions to the story as well as the new hero classes made a lot of the levels very fun. Dealing with The Chosen at times was very annoying but later on it would make you feel great whenever you killed them during a mission and inevitably on their home base.
Are you retarded? It's great.
Xcom 2 will never be good because to make a properly balanced game with turn timers you need to hand create the levels. I've had mission in 2 where there was not enough turns to get to the objective, even when sprinting there the whole way and avoiding enemies. All due to awful RNG level design. It's extremely fucking shit, I don't understand how anyone could defend it
>I've had mission in 2 where there was not enough turns to get to the objective
The only time I've ever failed a mission due to the timer was when I thought my specialist could hack the objective and took more time than I needed as a result. I always had enough time to reach objectives even while playing fairly cautiously. Maybe in the base game since I heard the timers were stricter and it was buggier but I doubt you genuinely couldn't reach an objective in time in WoTC and, that even if you were just that unlucky or happened across a glitch, that it constitutes normal gameplay for you.
>xcom 2 is too hard!!!
buy battle scanners retards
What I find more amusing is how new TBT try to fix nuCOM problems by adding time units or ballistics but they fail miserably, like Phoenix Point or Project Haven.
Solomon was right.
>small studio makes a game that becomes a smash hit
>"We need to make the sequel more of the same but as different as possible so people don't think we're just making more of the thing they liked"
>replace all the good things with stupid idiot mechanics to make it different
Many such cases.
playing LWOTC for the first time any tips? what should i build first? whats the best team composition? witch chosen should i kill first? what research order
I just wish I could have the character pool feature in EW. After having all my characters show up throughout the campaign in 2, it's hard to look forward to going back to turning randoms into someone else every time I play.
>Why is this game so appallingly bad?
It's not TftD, simple as.
Anyone has a mod jam+ mega?
there is no way to download collections anymore without owning the game on steam and the discord fags blocked the server for not verified users. Also Gog version of the game is aids to mod
The only thing I really hated about XCOM 2 was the mothership mechanic instead of being able to build bases. Also the tech tree feels really small compared to what I remember from OG Ufo games.
