It has a lot of fun little mechanics, mini games, side activities and Easter eggs and a simple but decently varies and presented main quest. What more do you want? The fact that none of its sequels managed to remotely replicate its level of quality makes it stand out even more.

They just don't get their own games. They always try to reinvent it after first or second game at most.
Really Freespace ending with FS2 was blessing in retrospect

It isn’t out of no where. 2 had high praise from the jump, especially among those disappointed how GTAIV turned out. It was the last of the open world gangster games to ride the line of funny and dark. Driving is better, aiming is better, activities were better. I enjoy the two games that came after, but they were clearly rush jobs and chose to go zany to try and curb criticism.

      >The fact that none of its sequels managed to remotely replicate its level of quality makes it stand out even more.
Except SR3 the game that sold more and people don't spam about online all the time.

      >why is this game so overrated
Its not. This is the only gta clone that gave Rockstar a run for their money
      >why do so many people like to pretend they played it
Lots of people have played it, young zoomer. This is why it had so many shitty sequels. Personally, I have finished it 3 times
      >pretending we like gta clones now?
We always like fun games. Old gta games were fun, and SR2 was the spiritual sequel of San Andreas

      >Its not. This is the only gta clone that gave Rockstar a run for their money
SR3 sold more and plays better.

Can anyone tell why Saints Row is supposed to be good? I've seen Elon Musk put one of the Row games in his all time favorites along Deus Ex, HL2, Bioshock, etc.

I have only briefly tried the demo of the first one at a 360 booth when I was a kid. It was like a gang-oriented San Andreas clone. I'm wondering why the series is held in high regard by people?

Not true at all. This was in the time of GTA IV which was a garbage movie game with no content that betrayed what gta sa was, SR2 made the perfect replacement for it.

And now zoomers will come with their youtuber historical revisionism

No you wouldn't. People liked SR2 when it was contemporary in part specifically because it was different from GTA IV.

it was more of a spiritual successor to gta vc/sa than gta iv was. I particularly sunk a fuckload more hours into SR2 than GTA IV. I always loved the gang system in SA but it really never got the chance to stretch its legs.

You nailed it on the head with "gang-oriented SA clone" cos that's exactly what it was and it released exactly when it needed to. SR1 was really rough around the edges but still fun, SR2 perfected that.

Saints Row and 2 especially came out during GTAIV's era, and it was the lighthearted and over-the-top version of what a lot of people loved from the GTAIII-SA era. When GTAIV leaned into gritty realism, Saints Row was a welcome foil to it, and SR2 did it best before they started really jumping the shark with 3, then they realized they can't un-jump the shark and went even further with 4.

That was fine, Saints Row 4 was basically the good sequel to Crackdown with a shittier aesthetic.

2 was Tango and Cash to PS2 era GTA’s Lethal Weapon
3 was Scary Movie to SR2, still some GTA dna but mostly an answer to itself.
4 was Meet the Spartans To SR 2, full self parody
Gat out of Hell was Return of Jafar

        > When GTAIV leaned into gritty realism

This was a meme and just not true, if anything GTA IV has way more lighthearted characters than any before, Niko, Roman, Brucie, Patrick, etc are all really fun and funny characters. If anything, SA is the edgiest one and the reason why all the try-hards like it. Anyhow, Saints Row is just the burger version of GTA, so super retarded and over the top, really misses what made GTA fun.

It is true, it may not have been true realism but it was definitely a lot more "grounded' and dark compared to other games.
The characters you mention stand out that much more because the game was so gloomy.

Not him but I think GTA 4 did lean into gritty realism, but also obviously had light-hearted content too, especially with Roman and Brucie. The original trailer had a gritty feel to it. But yeah you obviously get a lot of light-hearted jokes in the game itself, as well as gritty stuff.

          >Anyhow, Saints Row is just the burger version of GTA, so super retarded and over the top, really misses what made GTA fun.
Well, I wouldn't say Saints Row is bad because it's American. I think it's bad because it's bad. It's like a plate of vomit. Doesn't matter where the vomit comes from.

Saints Row 2 had the most kino story for me and missions were fun. It was the perfect mix between serious and silly at times without being over the top goofy. I didn't really enjoy 3 or 4 that much, and the reboot speaks for itself. 1 is just a GTA clone.

GTA4 cut out all the goofy silly shit from the previous GTA games, but Saints Row picked it up and ran with it.
They may be similar, but ultimately they are two different games with different intentions, both of which are enjoyable.

I know you fucking dickbrain Sleeping Dogs is awesome. Watch_Dogs 1 was mediocre. Watch_Dogs 2 is pretty good and plays like a version of GTA V that the developers actually gave a shit about. I had more fun with WD2 than with GTAV.

No it wasn’t, you just fell for bottom of the barrel marketing. The only thing good about WD2 was that some women had fully modeled assholes and pussies with no underwear so you could kill them to look up their skirts. Then the usual suspects cried and had it patched, removing any reason to own it.

              You didn't play it.

Clearing out gang locations stealthily with only the drone/RC is fun as fuck, the driving feels great, the music is good, The only weak part of it is the story. The humor is pretty self-deprecating to SF tech culture, but the protagonists feels like office millennials writing their own version of THUG2 and that's full-blooded cringe, but the rest of the game makes up for it.
