Why the frick are game devs moving to Unreal Engine now

There’s no way to boycott Tim Sweeney and Epic games these days when every AAA dev wants to use Unreal Engine. And rip, innovation

Using the engine just opens the door for a ue monopoly down the line. I have plenty of issue with the engine itself because it's tied to the worst gaming company out there.

This. Games are too complex these days and making a custom engine will take a lot of time and money to develop and they may not even recoup the development cost of the engine when the games are released.

Plus you have to train new people on your dedicated engine starting from UI.
As opposed to when you use the engine everyone uses from Patreon Adult Game tech demos through indie studios to AAA, when you just tell the guy to do a thing, not need to explain how to do it.

Unreal engine has always been the bread and butter of epic games, it is the only thing they are good at these years
The release of a new unreal engine version with features that are nothing to sneeze at, the consequent buyouts by epic of platforms like artstation for integration with the engine and the idiotic anti-dev strategy that unity, one of the biggest competitor in that field, has been pulling out mean you'll see a lot more of it

Again, epic should have just stuck to making engine instead of clowning themselves trying to take on valve

Games need to constantly increase graphical fidelity and attention to details because normies won't buy the game if the protagonist doesn't have the option to take a massive shit in a public toilet with feces in 8K resolution.
This means that modern game engines need to meet demands which are simply too complicated and too time consuming for your average dev studio to develop while working on everything else like models, textures, animations, world and level design, characters, writing, dialogue, quests, music etc.

Easier multiplat support oyu can target a phone if you want to
A lot of material and freebies you can find online a lot of tutorials etc.
    Less time upgrading internal tools
Less need for going under the hood won't need to fix some shitty hacks some intern made or seasoned developer introduced with the intention of fixing later but they never and then they discard the engine because ITS MUMH HACKKY BRO

Because it's widely available, rather well documented and easier to teach to new diversity hires who "already used the engine", i.e. slap together a few blueprints compared to literally every other in-house solution you might have. Just look at the mess that is Cyberpunk. The people who made the engine are long gone and nobody fricking knows how to work with that shit, hence the switch to UE for future projects.

    >We went into Deus Ex hoping that licensing an engine would allow us to focus on content generation and gameplay. For the most part, that proved to be the case. The Unreal Tournament code we ended up going with provided a solid foundation upon which we were able to build relatively easily. Dropping in a conversation system, skill and augmentation systems, our inventory and other 2D interface screens, major AI changes, and so on could have been far more difficult. UnrealEd, the main tool our designers used to generate our maps, was superior to anything else available. UnrealScript was very powerful and allowed programmers to do lots of interesting things quickly and easily. The dollars and cents of the deal were right, and I didn't have to hire an army of programmers to create an engine, 80 percent of whose functions already existed in Unreal Tournament. We were able to make what I hope is a state-of-the-art RPG-action-adventure-sim with only three slightly overworked programmers, which allowed us to carry larger design and art staffs than usual.

Plenty of older games used Unreal, with specifically UE1 and UE3 being big. For example, Mirror’a Edge use UE3, despite being created by DICE, who have a highly capable internal engine (Frostbite).

And Eidos Montreal is now moving Deus Ex back to Unreal with UE5. This is mostly due to their internal engine (Dawn) being a modified version of Glacier, IO Interactive’s (Hitman) engine, and they haven’t been a part of the same company since 2017.

All the competent programmers have left the video industry to make 10x as much working on technical software for the Corpos, so vidya relies on licensing one of the few game engines being maintained. Epic Games doesn't make video games either they just maintain the Unreal Engine...Fortnite was some indie shit Tim bought out. No different to how Gaben bought out indie games like L4D and DOTA2 and Team Fortress. TIM'S GAME was Unreal and he stopped making those ages ago.
